Police warn against illegal motorcycle convoys

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have issued a stern warning against unauthorised motorcycle convoys on highways, stressing that the use of outriders or marshals without approval is prohibited and may lead to legal action. This comes after a video went viral showing a group of motorcyclists travelling in convoy on a highway, escorted by riders in yellow safety vests. Federal Police Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the incident is believed to have occurred at Km285 of the North-South Expressway heading south, near Nilai, Negri Sembilan. It involved a movement from Kuala Lumpur towards the southern part of the country. Yusri said any group or convoy movement must notify the department in advance to coordinate their journey in the interest of safety for all road users. "If the motorcycle convoy is not escorted by traffic personnel, it must comply with all existing traffic regulations. "No use of outriders or marshals is permitted for convoy movements," he said in a statement today. Yusri said motorcyclists must ride responsibly, cautiously, and with full attention on the road, in accordance with Rule 5 of the Road Traffic Rules (Rule 42) LN 165/59. As a general rule, all road users must cooperate with one another in traffic, referring to Rule 1 of the Road Traffic Rules (Rule 42) LN 165/59. "Meanwhile, any vehicle moving at a slower speed must keep as close as possible to the left side of the road, and at all times drive in a manner that does not obstruct faster-moving vehicles, in line with Rule 4 of the Road Traffic Rules LN 166/59. "Obstructing the movement of other vehicles may result in enforcement action under Section 48 of the Road Transport Act 1987, where if convicted, the offender may be fined not less than RM1,000 and not more than RM5,000, or face imprisonment of up to one year, or both," he added. Yusri advised all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, to always cooperate while in traffic, whether on highways, federal roads, state roads or municipal roads. The video has been circulating on social media and has garnered more than 6,000 likes.

Cops: Tell us on FB if you witness dangerous driving

KUALA LUMPUR: Anyone who encounters dangerous driving, road rage incidents, illegal racing or speeding can report it straight to the authorities via social media. Federal police Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said all motorists need to do is to reach out to them via the department's official Facebook page. "This could be an alternative for motorists to share dashcam footage and images of traffic offenders with us. You can reach us at he told the New Straits Times today. Yusri said, ideally, motorists should go to the nearest police station and lodge a report and hand over any evidence they had, be it images or dashcam footage. "Sharing videos or images with us via the Facebook page would serve as a easier first step to reach us so that we can begin our investigations into any incident brought to our attention. "If our investigators require, you will still need to come in to have a statement recorded in order to facilitate further investigations," he said. Meanwhile, the Road Transport Department has advised users to download the MyJPJ application which could be used to channel information or complaints on traffic offenders to them. The department said complaints could be channeled through the e-Aduan@JPJ feature via the application. "We also want to remind the public to include complete information on the offence such as the date, time and location where the offence was committed. "Users can also upload images and videos of the offence here," it said, adding that the department would issue a notice to the alleged offender within 72-hours of receiving a complaint. It was previously reported that RTD received over 6,000 complaints from the public about errant motorists via the MyJPJ application during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri operations. RTD director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli was reported saying that a total of 6,687 complaints were received through the mobile application. The highest number of complaints were for queue cutting, with 1,766 reports, followed by 1,625 complaints for misuse of emergency lanes.

audreymd@ GERIK: Police will set up a task force comprising technical experts from various agencies to probe the fatal crash involving an express bus and an MPV, which killed 15 people here early this morning. Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the police-led task force would include experts from the Road Transport Department, the Land Public Transport Agency, Puspakom, the Chemistry Department, the Health Ministry, the Works Ministry, and the state Works Department. He said the team will support the police's probe into the accident. "To members of the public, if you have any information related to the accident, please come forward to the police to assist with the investigation. "Please avoid spreading information about the incident through social media or mass media as it can create confusion and interfere with the investigation." Asked if the driver had any previous traffic record, Yusri said the matter was still in the early stage of investigation. "We will be looking into all aspects: the driver's record, his background, his previous activities, and his employment history. "So far, I can only say that we will complete the investigation papers and examine the matter from every angle, to ensure the prosecution can proceed in court smoothly and effectively," he added. Asked on the ill-fated bus's maintenance record, Yusri said the task force would gather all necessary reports, including details about the bus, its condition, the driver, and more. "That is all the information I can share at this time," he said. Earlier, 14 UPSI students and a bus assistant were confirmed dead and seven others seriously injured when the bus they were travelling in overturned along Jalan Jeli-Gerik near Tasik Banding early this morning. The chartered bus was carrying 42 UPSI students who were travelling from Terengganu back to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim. Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus hit a Perodua Alza from behind before the driver lost control and the vehicle skidded off the road.
