PVL: Cloanne Mondoñedo, ZUS Coffee deny Chery Tiggo outright QF ticket

Cloanne Mondoñedo anchored ZUS Coffee's 19-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 15-6 win to deny Chery Tiggo an outright quarterfinal ticket in the 2025 PVL On Tour on Tuesday at the Candon City Arena. The 24-year-old playmaker tallied 36 excellent sets to go with two points as the Thunderbelles ended the preliminary round with a 3-2 card while the Crossovers fell to an identical card. ZUS' win also allowed Creamline (3-2) to book an automatic quarterfinal berth due to the Cool Smashers holding superior points. "We are happy na gano'n na, na resilient pero it also shows consistency so at least alam namin kung ano 'yung kailangan naming i-work on," ZUS head coach Jerry Yee said. "Marami pa [ang kailangang ayusin]. Ita-try pa natin na ipin-point 'yung mga gano'n pero at least we got the win and ayun na nga, lumalaban 'yung team kahit 'yung second unit." Chery Tiggo had an early 13-12 lead in the fourth set with Cess Robles attacking from the opposite side. But ZUS unleashed a telling 6-0 rampage highlighted by two blocks that allowed them to take an 18-13 cushion. That flipped the script for the rest of the set with rookie middle blocker AC Miner providing the spark on her decisive running kills, one of which sent the Thunderbelles to set point, 24-19. An attack error from Chery Tiggo enabled ZUS to force a decider. Chinnie Arroyo came alive in the final frame, unloading back-to-back hits for a 5-1 lead before a pair of attack errors from Chery Tiggo sent the other camp to a crucial 9-3 advantage. Chery Tiggo tried to rally behind Aby Maraño and Robles, whose hammer from the left side cut the deficit to five, 6-11. But ZUS responded with a 4-0 closing run ended by a combination play from Jovelyn Gonzaga off a perfect setup from Mondoñedo. Miner shone with 19 points anchored on 15 attacks and four blocks while Kate Santiago and Arroyo chipped in 13 and 11 markers with the former also posting 12 digs. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

ZUS Coffee stuns Creamline in five-set showdown; Chery Tiggo snaps Cignal streak

ZUS Coffee and Chery Tiggo carved out a pair of upset wins in the 2025 PVL On Tour on Saturday at the City of Passi Arena in Iloilo. The Thunderbelles wielded the upset ax on league powerhouse Creamline with a 24-26, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11 win---a feat that that not only dealt the Cool Smashers a rare second loss in a row but also allowed ZUS to bag its first-ever victory against the multi-titled squad. Chinnie Arroyo was at the forefront for ZUS, churning out 23 points on 22 attacks and an ace while veteran opposite hitter Jovelyn Gonzaga chipped in 12 markers as they improved to 2-1 in Pool B. Creamline, which was coming off a sweep loss to Cignal, fell to a 2-2 card. "Tinatak lang namin sa isip namin na ayun nga, crowd favorite 'yung Creamline pero hindi po dapat kami maapektuhan no'n. Hindi kami nagpadala sa crowd," Arroyo said. "Super malaki 'to sa amin kasi Creamline, champion po 'yan. Malaking bagay po sa amin 'tong game na 'to. Credits po sa lahat, hindi lang po ako 'yung lumaban." In the second game, Chery Tiggo kept its unbeaten run intact while dealing Cignal its first loss after eking out a 25-23, 26-28, 25-15, 25-15 win behind a collective effort. Rookie Rene Peñaflor impressed anew with 18 points while Ara Galang and Cess Robles chimed in with 15 and 14 markers apiece. Middle blocker Imee Hernandez finished with 11 points as the Crossovers racked up their third win in as many games. The HD Spikers, who have won their first three games against Akari, Capital1, and Creamline, saw their winning streak come to an end as they fell to 3-1. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Akari finally ends slump in PVL On Tour with five-set escape vs. ZUS

Akari needed to survive a grueling affair against a pesky ZUS Coffee to finally break through in the 2025 PVL On Tour, escaping with a 26-24, 25-21, 17-25, 17-25, 17-15 win on Saturday at the Ynares Center Montalban. The Chargers improved to 1-2 after opening the preseason contest with back-to-back losses to Cignal and Creamline. The Thunderbelles, meanwhile, had a tough way to open their campaign as they fell to 0-1. Grethcel Soltones led the way for the hungry Akari, flirting with a triple-double of 23 points, 11 digs, and nine receptions as they turned back ZUS to barge into the win column. The veteran outside spiker unloaded a strong kill that saw Akari taking a slim 8-7 lead before another seasoned wing spiker in Eli Soyud came alive to further extend the lead. The opposite spiker converted three straight points, including a pair of attacks and a rejection on Chinnie Arroyo, before Soltones made something out of an out-of-system setup from Ezra Madrigal to make it a 12-9 lead. But ZUS fought back thanks to middle blocker Maika Ortiz, whose two consecutive blocks powered a 3-0 run for a 12-all deadlock. Akari was the first to clinch the match point, but an attack error from Chenie Tagaod saw the game knotted at 15-all once more. Ced Domingo then completed a running play before Kate Santiago went wide on their combination play as Akari gutted out the hard-fought victory. In the first game, Chery Tiggo opened its On Tour debut in style after overcoming a slow start to pull off a 20-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-12 victory over the struggling Capital1. Cess Robles led with 17 points and nine digs while rookies Baby Jyne Soreño and Renee Peñafiel impressed with 15 and 11 markers apiece as they kept the Solar Spikers winless at 0-3. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Kuala Lumpur: ZUS Coffee has launched a major reforestation initiative in Sabah's Kinabatangan region by planting 500 native trees in Kampung Sukau, as part of its larger pledge to plant 5,000 trees in collaboration with conservation organisation Animal Projects & Environmental Education (APE Malaysia). The initiative, titled 'Kopi to Kinabatangan Canopy,' marks a significant step in the homegrown coffee chain's commitment to environmental sustainability and community empowerment. The project aims to restore degraded forest corridors, support local biodiversity, and strengthen rural involvement in environmental conservation. ZUS Coffee Chief Operating Officer Venon Tian said the reforestation effort reflects the brand's wider responsibility to the environment. 'Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for us; it's a responsibility. We know we can't solve the climate crisis alone, but we believe every step counts. This reforestation effort is our way of showing that doing good for the planet can be deeply rooted in who we are as a brand,' he said. The saplings comprising 22 native tree species which were cultivated from seeds and young plants by the residents of Kg Sukau, whose traditional knowledge played a vital role in the preparation and quality of the trees. Advertisement APE Malaysia's nursery provided a nurturing environment for the saplings before they were transferred to the planting site. APE Malaysia Project Manager Mark Louis Benedict said the planting site was once a degraded logging area. However, it is now showing signs of ecological recovery. 'This reforestation site is an important wildlife habitat area. The trees we've planted today will support food chains, restore these once degraded habitats and gradually rebuild a thriving ecosystem. The early signs are very encouraging,' he said. Wildlife activity including orangutan nests and signs of elephant feeding has already been recorded near the site. This offers hope that the area is on the path to regeneration. The project has received overwhelming support from the ZUS community, with over 341,000 app users backing the pledge to support reforestation efforts. ZUS expressed its gratitude to APE Malaysia, the Kg Sukau villagers and all volunteers and users involved, stating that the initiative is a meaningful step in healing the environment and protecting biodiversity for future generations. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Partnership to reforest Kinabatangan with 5,000 native trees

ZUS hopes to help preserve the natural environment and nurture a healthier ecosystem for future generations through the tree planting project in Kinabatangan. KOTA KINABALU (May 20): ZUS Coffee has officially kicked off its reforestation journey with the planting of the first 500 native trees in Kampung Sukau, Kinabatangan — a milestone in its larger pledge to plant 5,000 trees in partnership with Animal Projects & Environmental Education (APE Malaysia). More than just a corporate initiative, this is ZUS Coffee's commitment to environmental stewardship. It reflects ZUS' belief that creating a better tomorrow starts with the choices we make today. Through this project, ZUS hopes to help preserve the natural environment and nurture a healthier ecosystem for future generations. Rooted in collaboration, the trees were grown from seeds and young saplings supplied by the skilled hands of villagers from Kg Sukau. Their deep knowledge of local plant life not only ensured the saplings' quality but also strengthened the community's role in the restoration process. These saplings were then nurtured in APE Malaysia's nursery — home to 22 native species — before being carefully prepared for field planting. Each tree represents more than carbon absorption; it symbolises hope, healing, and the power of collective action. The first 500 were planted on-site by APE Malaysia's field team, and the ZUS team — hands in soil, hearts aligned with purpose. As a proudly homegrown Malaysian brand, ZUS has always believed that the brand's growth should go hand in hand with giving back to the land that shaped us. The 'Kopi to Kinabatangan Canopy' initiative aims to not only restore lost forest corridors but also protect vital biodiversity, empower rural communities, and reimagine how brands can contribute meaningfully to real-world climate solutions. This restoration would not have been possible without the incredible support of over 341,000 ZUS Coffee App users who backed the pledge. Thanks to the collective spirit, an area that was once a logging site void of natural tree cover is now showing signs of recovery. Orangutan nests and elephant feeding activity have already been spotted in the vicinity — a promising sign that life is returning. 'Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for us — it's a responsibility. We know we can't solve the climate crisis alone, but we believe every step counts. This reforestation effort is our way of showing that doing good for the planet can be deeply rooted in who we are as a brand,' said Venon Tian, Chief Operating Officer of ZUS Coffee. Mark Louis Benedict, Project Manager at APE Malaysia, shared, 'This reforestation site is an important wildlife habitat area. The trees we've planted today will support food chains, restore these once degraded habitats, and gradually rebuild a thriving ecosystem. The early signs are very encouraging.' ZUS extends sincere thanks to APE Malaysia for their expertise and vision, to the Kg Sukau community for their invaluable support, and to every volunteer and ZUS user who turned intention into impact. This project is a small but meaningful step in restoring what has been lost — and in safeguarding what matters for the generations to come.
