Police report filed against Sungai Buloh PAS chief over ‘inflammatory' post

(DAP pic) PETALING JAYA : A police report has been lodged against Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad over his recent social media post allegedly inciting racial sentiments by speculating about the possibility of a Malaysian of Chinese descent becoming prime minister. Kolektif Jalan Teruih, the Seberang Perai Tengah Youth Council, and Anak Muda Permatang Pauh said that Zaharudin's act was a form of provocation disguised as political satire, aimed at inciting racial tensions in a sly and irresponsible manner. The report was filed by Kolektif Jalan Teruih coordinator Nazirullah Nordin at the Seberang Perai Tengah police headquarters at 9.05pm yesterday. 'On the battlefield, there is no room for racial sentiment – only loyalty, courage, and love for the nation. It is only right that we firmly reject any attempt to stain the military with racial politics,' the groups said in a joint statement. The groups also said that the army was the nation's final line of defence, deserving of respect, dignity, and support, not mockery or weaponised to create fear. They called for Zaharudin to be investigated under the Sedition Act and the Communications and Multimedia Act. Zaharudin had attempted to defend his now-deleted Facebook post which included a photo of Johnny Lim, who was promoted to armed forces lieutenant-general earlier this week, becoming the first Malaysian of Chinese descent to attain the three-star rank. The PAS man said his post was aimed at raising awareness about the possibility of Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) visa holders having children in Malaysia, seeking citizenship, and even voting in the country. He claimed the programme might result in an influx of foreigners into the country who would then apply for citizenship. That would allow for a 'prime minister born from among these foreigners by 2058', he said. Zaharudin, the son-in-law of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, also claimed to have included Lim's photo in his post merely for 'decorative purposes'. It was not intended to convey any explicit or implicit message, he said. DAP deputy secretary-general Steven Sim called for legal action to be taken against Zaharudin, while PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the post went against the Islamic party's stance. The MM2H Consultants Association meanwhile urged Zaharudin to apologise for claiming that the MM2H programme could lead to visa holders eventually becoming citizens and voting in Malaysia. Its president, Anthony Liew, said the programme's policy clearly states that MM2H passes cannot be converted.

MCMC said the post was believed to refer to the recent promotion of a new lieutenant-general in the Malaysian Armed Forces, and had a narrative that could provoke unrest and threaten national unity. 'The individual was called in to provide a statement and assist with the investigation. MCMC also seized one mobile phone and a SIM card to facilitate the probe,' it said in a statement today. The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, up to two years' imprisonment, or both, upon conviction. MCMC also reminded the public not to upload, share, or circulate content that touches on race, religion and royalty (3R), especially material that could divide the public or disturb societal harmony. Although MCMC did not name the individual, the probe comes after Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad drew criticism over a Facebook post speculating on the emergence of a 'first Malaysian Chinese prime minister' in the next 30 to 40 years. The post included a screenshot of a news report on the promotion of lieutenant-general Johnny Lim, although Zaharudin later said that the image was only for illustration. He later deleted the post and claimed that his remarks were taken out of context.

MCMC records statement from man over an allegedly offensive post.
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has initiated investigation and recorded statements from an individual in connection with a racially charged post uploaded on his social media account. According to the commission, the post allegedly contained racial remarks in reference to the recent appointment of the new Lieutenant General of the Malaysian Armed Forces, which carried a provocative narrative with the potential to disrupt national unity and harmony. "As part of the investigation, the individual was called in to give a statement and assist with inquiries. "MCMC also seized one mobile phone and one SIM card to aid the investigation," said MCMC in a statement on Tuesday. (July 1) It added the case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction. The commission also reminded the public to not upload, share or disseminate any content that touches on religious, racial, or royal institution sensitivities (3R), especially those that could divide society and threaten national harmony. "MCMC remains committed to ensuring that Malaysia's cyberspace remains safe, secure and respected, in line with efforts to strengthen national unity and harmony among the country's multiracial citizens," the commission added. Earlier, in a now-deleted Facebook post, Sungai Buloh PAS division chief Zaharudin Muhammad suggested that the appointment of Major General Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng as the first ethnic Chinese Lt Gen will open the door for Malaysia to "have its first Chinese prime minister 30 to 40 years from now". Lim, a Melaka-born officer, had served in the military for 41 years, and said he had joined the army in 1984 to help contain the communist insurgency. (ends)
