Middlesex closing in on victory over Northants
Rothesay County Championship Division Two, Northwood (day three) Middlesex 625-8 dec: Holden 151, Williamson 114, Du Plooy 105, Cracknell 73; Zaib 3-70 Northamptonshire 261 & 64-3: Sales 26; Higgins 2-19 Northants (2 pts) trail Middlesex (8 pts) by 300 runs with seven wickets remaining Match scorecard Ryan Higgins moved to the top of Middlesex's wicket-taking chart for the season as his side closed in on victory over Northamptonshire at Merchant Taylors' School. Higgins finished with 4-51, with Noah Cornwell taking 3-48 as the visitors were made to follow on 364 behind – and the medium-pacer then grabbed two quick top-order wickets second time around to further improve his season's tally to 32. Northamptonshire stumbled to 64-3 at stumps and their plight would have been deeper but for rain stoppages and Saif Zaib's first-innings 82, which made him the county's first player to register 1,000 first-class runs in a season since Ben Duckett in 2016. Zaib was almost the fastest to that landmark across the Championship circuit, but the 27-year-old narrowly missed out to Surrey's Dom Sibley, who got there just 15 minutes earlier at Scarborough. Middlesex rotated their seam quartet when the visitors resumed on 126-4, but their spin options were limited after Zafar Gohar, tumbling to deal with George Bartlett's cover drive, landed awkwardly on his shoulder and had to leave the field. Bartlett, having steered Tom Helm neatly through gully for four, repeated the stroke later in the over and picked out the fielder this time, but Zaib continued to progress steadily as he built a partnership with Rob Keogh. Keogh, who had injured a finger while fielding on day one, did well to withstand a couple of Helm deliveries that rose sharply down the slope and helped Zaib to add 55 before Cornwell had him caught down the leg side. The left-hander went on to pass 50 for the ninth time in this season's Championship, ushering Northamptonshire's total beyond 200 before rain arrived to send the players off for an early lunch. Dom Leech provided spirited support, finding the boundary four times in his knock of 22 while Zaib capitalised on successive short balls from Leus du Plooy, pulling the slow left-armer for six and four. Higgins broke the seventh-wicket stand of 64 with two dismissals in as many deliveries, with Leech caught top-edging a hook before Ben Sanderson was lbw without scoring to leave the visitors eight down. A more persistent spell of rain held up play for the next hour and a half – but it took just three balls for Cornwell to wrap up Northamptonshire's first innings, knocking out Zaib's off stump with one that seamed back before cleaning up Yuzvendra Chahal with a yorker. After another weather-affected delay, Higgins reclaimed centre stage, winning what looked like a borderline lbw decision against Ricardo Vasconcelos and castling Aadi Sharma next ball to leave the visitors reeling at 10-2. James Sales began redressing the balance with a series of positive shots in his knock of 26, but he attempted one too many and lost his middle stump to Toby Roland-Jones. Stand-in skipper Lewis McManus remained defiant, punching Helm off the back foot to the fence to reach 21 not out before the light deteriorated sufficiently for the umpires to bring play to a close. Law college gang rape case: Calcutta HC directs state government to file affidavit on progress of probe; next hearing on July 10
Representative Image The Calcutta high court on Thursday directed Bengal government to file affidavit on progress of probe in law college gang rape case. The division bench, led by Justice Soumen Sen, instructed the state authorities to submit the investigation's case diary during the subsequent hearing scheduled for July 10. The high court received three Public Interest Litigations (PILs) regarding the alleged sexual assault of a law student at South Calcutta Law College, where an alumnus Monojit Mishra and two senior students- Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee- were reportedly involved, PTI reported. The court sent Monojit, Zaib and Pramit to police custody till July 8. What suspects told abut case? According to the officials, prime suspect Monojit Mishra, who allegedly "set eyes on her" the day she enrolled for the course, decided to "teach her a lesson" for repeatedly rebuffing his advances, co-accused Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee told police. Investigators quoted the arrested duo as saying that Monojit, a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad office-bearer whose clout on campus allegedly extended to admissions, would obsess over the survivor in conversations with his inner circle and hatch plans to make her his girlfriend. He even offered her the post of the college union's general secretary - supposedly his "final bait" - before planning the alleged assault inside the campus security guard's room on June 25 with law students Zaib and Pramit. "Zaib and Pramit said that at least two days before the crime, Monojit informed them that the survivor would be on campus to submit an exam form. They were instructed to keep her there until evening," a source said in the previous TOI copy. After the crime, Monojit allegedly asked some of his trusted aides to be on campus and keep an eye on any unusual activity at Kasba police station, about a kilometre away, through the night. He, Zaib and Pramit left around the same time as the survivor, who was picked up by her have also found out that Monojit, a temporary non-teaching staff member, called a college official the next morning. The official claimed the discussion was "confined to college-related matters". Pramit contacted a lawyer that day, police said. He and Zaib also called several college seniors, some with political links, pleading for help. They refused, telling the duo to "face the consequences", sources said.

Campus rapists used inhaler to revive woman, prolong assault
KOLKATA: Ex-Trinamool Chhatra Parishad office-bearer Monojit Mishra and his two alleged accomplices in the campus gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student used an inhaler to revive the woman when she appeared to lose consciousness so that they could continue the assault, police said during a court hearing Tuesday to illustrate what the prosecution termed their "intent and desperation". "When the girl became breathless (the survivor mentions in her complaint that she had a panic attack), she was provided the inhaler - not to revive her but to ensure she regained consciousness and they could assault her sexually," public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal told the Alipore court while seeking police custody of the arrested suspects till July 10. The court remanded prime suspect Mishra and law students Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee in police custody until July 8. Security guard Pinaki Banerjee, arrested on suspicion of abetting the June 25 crime inside the guardroom, will remain in custody until July 4. Ghosal argued for extended custody on the ground that the suspects, especially Mishra, were "very influential and may influence the investigation". If granted bail, they might "terrorise" the survivor and tamper with evidence, he said. Police also informed the court that not only did the medical report of the survivor corroborate her statement, technical evidence collected by the special investigation team and circumstantial proof matched her version of how the crime unfolded. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo New evidence presented include CCTV footage from the pharmacy where the inhaler was purchased and the mobile location data of the suspects. Police have questioned six of 17 students present on campus that evening. Investigators are examining why Mishra called the college vice-principal the day after the assault. They also plan to question the college union's general secretary, who left the survivor alone hours before the attack after promising to return. According to the FIR, the general secretary was with the survivor from 4pm to 7.30pm after Zaib summoned them, claiming Mishra wanted to discuss something regarding the union. The general secretary then left, saying she would return shortly, but never did. Police quoted Zaib and Pramit as telling interrogators that Mishra planned the assault after repeated rejections by the survivor, whom he purportedly wanted to marry. The college's governing body has expelled Mishra, who worked as a temporary member of the non-teaching staff while practising law. The other two suspects have been barred from all Bengal educational institutions. The college will petition the authorities to revoke Mishra's law licence. The college's vice-principal said Tuesday that the perpetrators of the crime should be "hanged".

Kolkata gangrape case: Accused got inhaler for victim, then continued assault; CCTV footage confirms
NEW DELHI: In a disturbing detail that has emerged from the gangrape case at South Calcutta Law College, police said CCTV footage confirmed that one of the accused, Zaib Ahmed, left the crime scene briefly to buy an inhaler for the victim. He went to a medical store to buy inhaler after she pleaded for relief from breathlessness during the alleged assault. According to investigators, the footage from a nearby medical shop showed Zaib purchasing the inhaler at the victim's request, following her deteriorating condition inside the security guard's room where the assault took place on the evening of June 25. 'The victim said she had begged for medical help after falling ill during the torture. The accused denied taking her to a hospital but did get her an inhaler from a pharmacy. She felt better temporarily, but the torture continued,' a senior officer told news agency PTI. The pharmacy owner told police that Zaib attempted to split the payment, partly in cash and partly through UPI, but eventually paid the full amount online. Investigators have documented the transaction and matched it with the time of the assault. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Meanwhile, medical reports have revealed fresh nail scratch marks on the body of the prime accused, Monojit Mishra, indicating the victim put up resistance during the attack. The two have since been questioned regarding their conversation. Investigators are also questioning 16 individuals, mostly students, seen in the college premises via CCTV footage after class hours on June 25. Six were interrogated on Tuesday. Kolkata police commissioner Manoj Verma confirmed that digital, circumstantial, and medical evidence gathered so far aligns with the victim's official complaint. 'The matter is extremely sensitive. But I can confirm that arrests were made within 12 hours of the FIR,' he said. Three men, Monojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, are in custody, along with a security guard, Pinaki Bandyopadhyay, who was on duty during the assault.
