Libya authorities intercept over 100 migrants off coast

TRIPOLI: Libyan authorities on Monday said they had intercepted 113 migrants off the country's coast and recovered three bodies in separate operations over three days. The bodies of three 'illegal migrants of African nationalities' were discovered on a beach in Misrata, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) east of Tripoli, the Ministry of Interior said. Also on Monday, security forces on a speedboat intercepted 54 migrants off Garabulli, 50 kilometers east of the capital Tripoli, the ministry added. They were brought back to the capital's port and handed over to the competent authorities, it said. The day before, 'as part of a plan to intensify maritime patrols during the summer,' 20 migrants 'of various nationalities' were rescued off Zawiya, 45 kilometers west of Tripoli, the ministry said Sunday. On Saturday, 39 migrants were intercepted off the eastern coast of Tripoli, the ministry reported, without providing further details about where they were found or their point of departure. Libya has been gripped by unrest since the 2011 overthrow and killing of longtime ruler Muammar Qaddafi in a NATO-backed uprising. It has become a hub for tens of thousands of migrants trying to reach Europe, risking their lives at sea. Migrants intercepted by Libyan authorities — even in international waters before reaching the Italian coast, some 300 kilometers away — are forcibly returned to Libya and held in detention under harsh conditions frequently condemned by the United Nations.

Libya's AGOCO completes Hamada-Zawiya oil pipeline repairs

TRIPOLI - Libya's Arabian Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO) has completed repairs to a crude oil pipeline leak along the 18-inch Hamada-Zawiya line, it said on Thursday, after an oil leak in late May. The leak prompted full isolation of the pipeline to halt the flow of crude, followed by the suction of oil from the pipeline and its return to the Tahara field for repumping. Zawiya, 40 km (25 miles) west of Tripoli, is home to Libya's biggest functioning refinery, with capacity of 120,000 barrels per day (bpd). The refinery is connected to the country's 300,000 bpd Sharara oilfield. (Reporting by Ahmed Elumami Writing by Tala Ramadan Editing by David Goodman )

Convoy arrives in Libya en route to Gaza to challenge Israel's blockade on aid

A convoy carrying hundreds of activists has arrived in Libya after driving from Algeria and crossing through Tunisia on its way to the Gaza Strip to challenge Israel's blockade on humanitarian aid on the territory. The convoy is made up of at least 1,500 people, including activists and supporters from Algeria and Tunisia – with more expected to join from Libya. Advertisement The group arrived in Zawiya city in Libya on Tuesday and plans to reach Gaza via Egypt's Rafah Crossing, travelling by cars and buses. Members of a humanitarian convoy of at least 1,500 people (Yousef Murad/AP) It drove through the Libyan cities of Tripoli, Misrata, Sirte, and Benghazi to reach the Saloum Crossing which borders Egypt. It is expected to soon reach Cairo before heading to the Rafah Crossing. Jamila Sharitah, an Algerian participant, said that authorities in Tunisia and Libya have been co-operative with the convoy, helping facilitate their smooth journey. Zayed al-Hamami, another participant, said the convoy aims to push for re-opening crossings and allowing aid into the Gaza Strip. Advertisement 'There are land, sea and air convoys that will arrive in Gaza despite the restrictions,' said convoy organiser Terkiya Shayibi. She added that violent responses against the convoy will not frighten them. Israel's military seized a Gaza-bound aid boat with Greta Thunberg and about a dozen other activists on board on Monday, enforcing a longstanding blockade of the Palestinian territory that has been tightened during the Israel-Hamas war. Israeli forces deported Ms Thunberg on Tuesday. Advertisement The activists on the boat began their journey to protest over Israel's military campaign in Gaza — one of the deadliest and most destructive wars since the Second World War — as well as the blocking of humanitarian aid. Experts have warned of famine in the territory of more than two million people unless the blockade is lifted and Israel ends its military offensive.

Libya says oil leak occurs in pipeline south of Zawiya city

An oil leak forced the shutdown of a pipeline south of Libya's city of Zawiya, the National Oil Corporation (NOC) said on Saturday. Zawiya, 40 km (25 miles) west of the capital Tripoli, is home to Libya's biggest functioning refinery, with a capacity of 120,000 barrels per day. The refinery is connected to the country's 300,000-barrels-per-day Sharara oilfield. The NOC posted a picture showing a stream of leaked oil in the desert. Flow from the Hamada oilfields through the affected pipeline was immediately halted, the company said in a statement. "In parallel with the maintenance work, a team of specialists is conducting an investigation to determine the causes of the leak. Arrangements and coordination are also underway to recover the leaked oil and address any resulting environmental pollution," the company added.
