Yelp ranks top chicken sandwich chains; two Georgia spots make the cut

When it comes to chicken sandwiches, Georgia doesn't just compete, it leads. Chick-fil-A, Georgia's own beloved fast-food chain, has claimed the No. 1 spot on Yelp's list of the Top 20 chicken sandwich chains of the year. Chick-fil-A started in a small diner in Hapeville, Georgia and is now known across the country for making great chicken. "Chick-fil-A is famous for its simple, perfectly seasoned chicken sandwich served on a toasted buttered bun," Yelp wrote. "Simple? Yes. Iconic? Absolutely." Who founded Chick-fil-A? The trio behind Chick-Fil-A is the Cathy family and siblings are Bubba, Dan, and Trudy. The first location opened in 1967 at Atlanta's Greenbriar Mall. The chain has more than 2,800 restaurants across the U.S. and in Canada and Puerto Rico. Chick-fil-A is also "known for its consistency, customer service and loyal fanbase," Yelp wrote. But this isn't the only Georgia-founded favorite that landed on the list. Founded in Statesboro, Zaxby's ranked No. 10 in the nation. Who founded Zaxby's? Tony Townley and Zach McLeroy, both 62-years-old, started this food chain in 1990. Zaxby's corporate location is in Athens, where the two grew up and met in the seventh grade. "Zaxby's is known for bold sauces, crispy chicken, and its crave-worthy Zax sauce," Yelp wrote. "When the brand entered the chicken sandwich wars in 2021 with its Signature Sandwich, it brought the same flavor-forward approach to a handheld format." Here are all other Yelp rankings. Southern California Pastrami Favorite Finally Expands to Las Vegas

Southern California's beloved pastrami destination, the Hat, is finally moving forward with plans to open in Las Vegas — six years after the chain announced it would expand to Southern Nevada. Construction is now underway on a 4,122-square-foot restaurant at 6239 South Rainbow Boulevard — the same space it staked out in 2019 — with a drive-thru and outdoor patio. The Hat has been a California staple since 1951, serving pastrami dips poised for dunking into homemade au jus, plus burgers, turkey sandwiches, and onion rings. The Hat teased the opening on Instagram, announcing a grand opening in spring 2026. The Hat joins a growing parade of regional fast food favorites expanding into Las Vegas. Most recently, Georgia's favorite fast-food chicken chain, Zaxby's, opened a drive-thru here. Earlier this year, North Carolina-based Bojangles opened in the Southwest, and Hawaii-based Zippy's opened its second location in the Vegas area. And that's not to mention the grocery stores Aldi and H-Mart, which debuted in April. Still rumored to make a Las Vegas appearance: Portillo's potentially. Late-Night Skewers Land in Chinatown The team behind Chubby Cattle's conveyor-belt hot pot restaurant and the high-tech X-Pot on the Strip is back with a new late-night venture. Chubby Skewers opens Wednesday, June 18, on Spring Mountain Road, serving Northeastern Chinese Dongbei-style barbecue from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. Skewers start at just $1, with a menu that ranges from wagyu beef to duck tongue to spicy cold noodles. The space channels the energy of old-school Chinese street stalls — think bold reds, neon lights, and low tables. New York Noodle Hybrid Extends Its Short-Term Pop-Up Pastaramen, the boundary-blurring Japanese-Italian pop-up from chef Robbie Felice, is extending its run at Bar Zazu in Resorts World Las Vegas through July 12. Originally slated for just a one-month residency, the crossover has drawn crowds with dishes like cacio e pepe gyoza, mochi ramen carbonara, and a $250 truffle porcini ramen that is dramatically prepared in a flaming wheel of Parmigiano-Reggiano. Brewdog Opens a Beer Hall Beneath Its Rooftop Behemoth UnderDog Beer Hall opens on Thursday, June 12, beneath BrewDog's massive 30,000-square-foot rooftop brewpub on the Las Vegas Strip. Tucked inside the Showcase Mall, UnderDog brings a more casual vibe with giant screens, a new pizza-focused menu, and beers on tap — including BrewDog favorites like Elvis Juice and guest pours from local Las Vegas breweries. Baguette Cafe Heads Downtown Baguette Café opened a new downtown Las Vegas location on May 22 right on Las Vegas Boulevard, near Fremont Street. It brings together signature French-inflected breakfast, brunch, and lunch fare just a block from Fremont Street. Known for thoughtful sourcing and warm hospitality, this marks the café's third outpost in the valley — and its first in the heart of Downtown. Chef Leticia Mitchell Opens Another Cocina Leticia's Cocina and Cantina is opening a new location at Boulder Station this summer. Known for dishes like birria quesatacos, shrimp ceviche, and Mexico City-style enchiladas suizas, chef Leticia Mitchell first gained national attention with an appearance on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives . This will be her second location with Station Casinos, following the original inside Santa Fe Station. She also runs Letty's, a fast-casual spin-off downtown, and sister restaurant Carmelita's Mar y Tierra in East Las Vegas. Leticia's will replace the now-closed Guadalajara restaurant. See More:

Here's what we know, including how to get them in Georgia: The milkshakes are already slowly rolling out to stores, with some already selling it. According to the company's Monday news release, they are expected to be nationwide by June. Zaxby's said, as of this summer, the milkshakes will be on menus permanently. Meaning you don't have to worry about getting them before they are gone. The milkshakes are hand spun and topped with whipped cream, colorful sprinkles, and a Maraschino cherry. They come in vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and "Birthday Cake" with flavors of baked cake, buttercream, and French vanilla. Zaxby's milkshakes typically start at about $5, but now until June 1, they are being sold at half price: $2.50. You don't need to be part of Zaxby's rewards program to get the sale. All milkshakes are available in only small. Zaxby's online store locator has started marking restaurants with a milkshake icon to identify whether or not they sell the shakes. Currently, they are sold all over Atlanta, Augusta, Athens, and Macon. Savannah currently only has one selling it at 8040 White Bluff Rd. Popular chicken chain brings back beloved menu item after 7 years

Fried chicken can be eaten in many different ways; some like it with fries, and others between a toasted bun. But many Georgians prefer to eat their chicken paired with a thick milkshake. This combination might sound a bit strange, but don't knock it until you've tried it. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Founded in 1990 in Statesboro, Georgia, Zaxby's is known for its delicious chicken fingers, wings, and famous Zax Sauce. The chain is the embodiment of southern hospitality, which has allowed it to expand to over 940 locations across 17 states. Zaxby's introduced milkshakes to its menu in 2013 to provide more sweet treat options for its chicken-loving fans. This move also allowed it to better compete with rivals in a similar food sector. They are traditionally hand-spun, made-to-order, handcrafted shakes topped with sprinkles and finished with a Maraschino cherry. However, the chicken restaurant suddenly removed milkshakes from its menu in 2017 due to operational issues, leaving many customers saddened by the surprising decision. Image source: Shutterstock After nearly seven years of discontinuing its milkshakes, Zaxby's partnered with Visit Macon in 2024 to relaunch its iconic milkshakes for an exclusive market test. This initiative aimed to attract more tourism to Macon, Georgia, and to encourage the chicken chain to return milkshakes to its menu by testing them with a specific audience on a smaller scale. The customer response was so good that the chain expanded its availability to 500 restaurants at the beginning of this year. "Zaxby's delicious milkshakes have made their long-awaited return after years of requests from our most loyal fans," said Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer Patrick Schwing in a press release. In honor of its 35th birthday, Zaxby's is returning its beloved milkshakes to its permanent menu after a seven-year hiatus to answer consumers' demand.
