Chinese man swallows spoon while drunk in Thailand, discovers it 5 months later
A 29-year-old Chinese man was shocked to discover that he had a 15cm ceramic spoon lodged in his intestine—five months after he accidentally swallowed it during a drunken night in Thailand, reported South China Morning Post (SCMP). Known only by his surname Yan, the man visited Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital in June, complaining of stomach discomfort and suspecting he may have ingested plastic while eating takeaway food. But doctors instead found a long spoon wedged inside his duodenum, the first section of the small intestine. Medical experts said the spoon was precariously positioned—so much so that even minor movements could have led to intestinal perforation or internal bleeding. It was then that Yan recalled his trip to Thailand in January, where he had tried to induce vomiting with a coffee spoon while intoxicated in his hotel room. The ceramic spoon was inadvertently pulled from his hand by a force in his throat and slid into his stomach, as per SCMP. After blacking out from alcohol, Yan awoke with no memory of the incident and assumed the discomfort was from vomiting. Believing the whole thing had been a dream, he carried on with his daily life after returning to Shanghai—including regular workouts—without any major symptoms. Doctors said the position and slick surface of the spoon made removal difficult. On June 18, an endoscopic surgery was performed to retrieve the object. Initial attempts using snare forceps failed, prompting Zhou Hongping, director of the endoscopy centre, to switch tactics. His team used two types of forceps to first reposition the spoon into the stomach before successfully extracting it. The entire operation took 90 minutes. Yan has since been discharged and expressed his gratitude that the spoon was discovered before any serious damage occurred. (With inputs from South China Morning Post)

Doctors remove 15cm spoon from body of Chinese man: Patient thought it was a dream; traces it back to Thailand drinking episode
Representative image A 29-year-old Chinese man unknowingly lived with a 15cm coffee spoon inside his body for nearly six months after accidentally swallowing it while being intoxicated in Thailand. The man, identified as Yan, only discovered the foreign object when he visited a doctor in Shanghai in June, suspecting he had swallowed plastic while eating takeaway food. Instead, scans revealed a ceramic spoon lodged in his duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. Doctors at Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital said the spoon's location was extremely risky. Even slight movement could have led to a puncture in the intestine, causing inflammation or serious internal bleeding, reported South China Morning Post. Yan then recalled a hazy incident during a trip to Thailand in January. After heavy drinking, he had tried to use a coffee spoon to induce vomiting. The spoon slipped from his hand and slid down his throat. He later blacked out and, upon waking, believed it had all been a dream. He blamed his stomach pain on vomiting. Back in Shanghai, Yan resumed his normal life, including regular workouts, with no major health problems. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? The initial attempt using a snare forceps failed due to the spoon's slippery surface. Zhou Hongping, head of the hospital's endoscopy center, then led a more complex procedure using two forceps to drag the spoon into the stomach before switching tools for successful removal. The entire process took 90 minutes. Yan has since recovered and been discharged. He expressed relief that the spoon was found by chance before it caused any major harm. The bizarre case follows another recent incident in China where a 64-year-old man discovered a 17cm toothbrush had been inside his body for 52 years. He had accidentally swallowed it at age 12 and never told anyone, hoping it would dissolve on its own.

Chinese man lived with spoon in body for months, mistaking it for a drunken dream
A 29-year-old Chinese man was shocked to learn that he had a 15cm-long coffee spoon lodged inside his body for nearly six months, following a boozy holiday in Thailand. As reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the man, identified only as Yan, had dismissed the incident as a dream until a recent medical check-up in Shanghai revealed the truth. However, doctors conducting an endoscopy were startled to find not plastic, but a ceramic coffee spoon wedged in his duodenum—the upper part of the small intestine. Its placement was highly precarious; any sudden movement could have torn the intestinal wall, potentially causing severe bleeding or inflammation. According to hospital staff, it was a miracle the object hadn't caused serious damage during those months. Reconstructing a forgotten night It was only after the discovery that Yan recalled an unusual moment from his Thailand trip back in January. He remembered being intoxicated in his hotel room and attempting to induce vomiting using a spoon. He recounted that the spoon 'was pulled from my hand by a force in my throat and disappeared inside.' Following that, he blacked out due to heavy drinking. The next morning, he dismissed the memory as part of an alcohol-induced dream and attributed the lingering discomfort to the aftereffects of vomiting. Surgery and a stroke of luck Despite unknowingly carrying the spoon inside him, Yan returned to Shanghai and resumed his daily routine, including workouts, with no major symptoms. It wasn't until the endoscopic investigation that the forgotten souvenir from his trip was uncovered. Doctors initially struggled to retrieve the spoon due to its smooth surface and dangerous positioning. Dr Zhou Hongping, head of the hospital's endoscopy centre, led the intricate procedure. After a failed first attempt using snare forceps, the team employed two different forceps to manoeuvre the spoon back into the stomach before finally removing it. The entire surgery lasted 90 minutes. Reflecting on the ordeal, he expressed immense relief and said he was thankful that the object had been discovered purely by chance.
