Why tourists baulk

Why tourists baulk Re: "Israeli market poised to contract amid war", (Business, June 21). Thailand has been frequently in the news of late regarding its tourism drop-off. The stated reasons are only part of the story. Setting aside food and some hotel prices, Thailand has one of the world's lowest inflation rates, but you may not know this as a tourist, as its currency is strong. China's outbound tourism is down just about everywhere, while many Europeans are staying home due to their ongoing wars, poor economies, and inept politicians. Japan is "in just now" in part due to its depreciating currency of late, despite, in my opinion, rather difficult-to-navigate public transport, bland food (fish and mostly white rice), and no garbage bins. Paul A Renaud Who comes next? Re: "Don't rush censure bid, BJT told", (BP, June 26). I, too, feel that PM Paetongtarn gravely lacks the expertise necessary to lead us, but before we kick her out, who's a better alternative? We should ensure we're not jumping from the frying pan into the fire. For example, 99 leading Thai economists, including former central bank governors, wrote an open letter opposing her 10,000-baht digital wallet handout, citing issues like the recovering economy and a fiscal multiplier below one. Poor results from the first two tranches of the handout supported the opponents' arguments. Who would have the vision and expertise to do better than Ms Paetongtarn, and what would they have done with the funds? Being constructive in our criticism would be very persuasive in convincing MPs that Ms Paetongtarn could have done much, much better and should exit the stage. Burin Kantabutra Calm before creed Re: "Analysis: US military pulled back into Middle East wars", (World, June 22). Like Hamas, Iran's disdain for peaceful coexistence with Israel needs to be contained. But when US President Donald Trump's Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth boastfully proclaims regarding his country's allegedly pre-emptive attack on Iran that "We give glory to God" (Pentagon briefing, June 22), he sounds as nutty as Iran's theocratic leaders in same vein as thuggish as Zionists claiming Israel has a divine right to all of Palestine, and too disturbingly like Osama bin Laden following his vile terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on Sept 11, 2001. Pope Leo XIV's prompt response urging peaceful resolution and respectful tolerance sounds more like what Christianity and its fellow Abrahamic religions should aspire to, rather than their habitual warmongering lust of many centuries for violence and suppression. Felix Qui Rainbow overkill Re: "Gender recognition law next big step", "Srettha bangs drum for LGBTQ+ rights", & "Thailand records 4.24% drop in foreign visitors", (BP, June 25). You know, as an older gay man, when I picked up a copy of the Bangkok Post which had been closed in haste and placed back on the newspaper rack at a popular straight expat pub where I read the Post everyday over a beer, I couldn't help but notice that on page one there was a big "gay" news story, and then on page 2 there were more "gay" news stories... ...as in gay, gay, gay, and by the way, did I mention the word "gay"? I noticed that families are starting to choose other countries instead of Thailand. My tourist neighbourhood has few tourists of any sexual orientation, and is now on the brink of financial collapse as tourism crashes despite a month-long LGBTQ+ push. ...my, what a "dimming rainbow"?

Three Palestinians killed in West Bank in clashes with Jewish settlers

Three people were killed in the occupied West Bank late on Wednesday after dozens of Israeli settlers attacked a Palestinian village close to Ramallah, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. Palestinian residents of the village Kafr Malik said on Thursday that there were both casualties and property damage after Jewish settlers attacked the town. One of the injured Palestinians, Munjed Nawaf Hamayel, said that his brother, Murshed, was shot dead by a soldier during the attack. "We were surprised that the settlers started attacking the houses and burning the cars," said Hamayel. "The soldier came from that direction and shot him," Hamayel said. "He (the soldier) saw that he had nothing with him." The Israeli military confirmed that settlers set fire to property in Kafr Malik and said five people were arrested. It explained that its soldiers opened fire on Palestinians who had thrown rocks at forces and that some people were killed and wounded as a result. 100 Israeli settlers stormed town, Palestinians claim Najeb Rostom, the head of Kafr Malik, said more than 100 settlers entered the town on Wednesday evening, set property on fire and shot at residents who tried to stop them. A human rights organisation released CCTV footage on Thursday of Israeli settlers assaulting Palestinian villages in the occupied West Bank. In one of the videos by B'Tselem, masked individuals were seen in the village of Taybeh brandishing sticks and throwing stones. A second video by the organisation showed smoke rising and a car on fire in the town of Kafr Malk. Both incidents took place on Wednesday. The Israeli army said that they are not aware of the incident in Taybeh. Funeral held for the victims On Thursday, Palestinians held a funeral for three men who were killed in the attack. Mourners carried the bodies of Lutfi Bairat, Mohamed Alnaji, and Murshed Hamayel and chanted, "Listen, Zionists: Our people will never kneel." Tensions have risen in the occupied West Bank, where clashes with Israeli troops, arrest raids and attacks by Jewish settlers have occurred more frequently since Hamas' deadly attack on southern Israel in 2023, in which militants killed over 1,300 people and captured around 150. Israeli authorities have built around 160 settlements, illegal under international law, housing some 700,000 Jews in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967.

Glasgow students back Palestine Action in Instagram post

Glasgow University's Justice for Palestine Society (GUJPS), who have long protested the institution's investments in arms companies, expressed support for Palestine Action in an online statement on Sunday, alongside groups at universities in London, Cambridge, and Liverpool. The statement, which was posted to Instagram, read: 'From our campus to our streets, we, the students, unequivocally stand side by side with Palestine Action against the government's shameful threats of proscription. 'This is an unprecedented escalation by the state against our entire movement. We stand united in our resistance to state against our entire movement. "We stand united in our resistance to state repression, and we reassert our commitment to enforcing a people's arms embargo by materially disrupting the flow of arms to the zionist entity and striking at imperialism from within institutions. 'The student movement and Palestine Action are two fronts of one struggle for liberation. As the student movement for Palestine, we will continue to organise to make it untenable for our universities to maintain their ties with zionism.' Supporters of the group rallied in London on Monday. Members of GUJPS have previously occupied university buildings, blocked campus thoroughfares, and participated in a week-long encampment several months ago The group sparked controversy in March when it called for the 'banning of all Zionists from campus.' Jewish student Anat Kraskin wrote in The Herald: 'Over the past year, Jewish students have been subjected to constant hostility, including protests, aggressive rhetoric, and attempts to delegitimize Jewish identity under the pretense of anti-Zionism.' In response, a GUJPS spokesperson said the call to ban Zionists was 'in direct response to the repeated invitation of prominent pro-Israeli speakers" as well as companies "which facilitate and profit off of Israel's genocide.' Palestine Action faces being proscribed as a terrorist organisation after several activists broke into RAF Brize Norton and damaged two military planes, the latest in a series of high-profile incidents. In March, the group was accused of vandalising US President Donald Trump's Turnberry golf club, after red paint was daubed on the venue's clubhouse and the words 'Gaza is not 4 sale' was spray painted on one of the resort's greens. Donald Trump's Turnberry golf course was vandalised. (Image: PA) Palestine Action activists also occupied the Thales weapons factory in Govan on 1 June 2022, setting off flares and causing more than £1m in damage. Five demonstrators were sentenced to 12-14 months in prison last August. However, we do not tolerate criminal activities or those which interfere with the rights of others to go about their business in peace. 'As an institution we stand against hate or harassment of any kind. We regularly communicate with all our staff and students about the need for tolerance towards each other, and we reiterate this call for all members of our community to be respectful to each other at all times.'

Former AFL star Warren Tredrea under fire after guest's anti-Israel comments aired on podcast episode

Former AFL star Warren Tredrea has come under fire after airing an episode of his 'The Ballsy Show' podcast where a guest slandered Israel and shared 'conspiracy theories". AJ Roberts, who was referred to as a British Army veteran when he featured on the Port Adelaide board member's podcast last month, went into a tirade against Israel as the Port Adelaide legend listened on. 'Israel is a quote-unquote fake state,' Mr Roberts said in the episode. 'It was created post-World War II by the same Zionists who were controlling World War II.' Mr Roberts went on to talk about 'genocide' he claimed was being carried out, which he asserted was 'highly satanic'. He also made claims about Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, linking it to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and terrorist group ISIS. According to ABC News, the Jewish Council of Australia executive officer Max Kaiser in a statement has blasted the remarks that went to air. "The Jewish Council of Australia is deeply disturbed by the amplification of far-right antisemitic conspiracy theories in this Instagram post and podcast episode," Mr Kaiser said. The Ballsy Show is released on multiple platforms, and the controversial episode has racked up nearly 1000 views on YouTube since being posted on the AFL legend's channel, in which Mr Roberts is described as a '15-year British Army veteran turned coach, speaker, and truth-seeker". 'From military intelligence to questioning government and media narratives, AJ dives into energy portals, chakras, and the impact of executive orders,' the listed description of the episode says. '(Mr Roberts) reveals how lockdown sparked his curiosity, leading to a rising consciousness that challenges the status quo. If you're ready to see beyond the surface, this episode is your call to action.' Mr Tredrea, who is also a Port Adelaide Football Club board member, shared clips of the podcast to his social media accounts, including Mr Roberts comments on Israel. One person commented on a Facebook post of one of the clips 'What a crock', while another commenter reacted to a similar post saying 'crap'.
