Iraqi PM inaugurates Al-Abbasiya power plant in Najaf
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, inaugurated on Wednesday the Al-Abbasiya power plant in the central Iraqi province of Najaf. The power plant, developed by the German corporation Siemens, had been designed to alleviate power supply issues on the national grid, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The power plant is connected by two 132 kV transmission lines, extending over 29 kilometers, with a capacity of 240 megawatts per line. On Monday, a new 480-megawatt electricity transmission line in the southern Iraqi province of Basra became operational, according to the Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel. These initiatives are part of the Iraqi government's strategy to improve the infrastructure of the transmission network and attain energy sustainability throughout Iraq. The new electricity projects are expected to help bridge the gap in growing demand, especially during peak consumption periods in the summer. Baghdad is taking steps forward to fulfill the country's growing energy demand, as between 32,000 and 35,000 megawatts are needed to cover domestic consumption. With the help of locally produced fuel, Iraq's electrical sector is set to make substantial progress toward power production projects, which will eventually lead to energy self-sufficiency. Fadel mentioned earlier that achieving energy self-sufficiency and cutting dependency on imported fuel, which has led to a crisis in the country's electrical system in the last few years, are the main goals of the government's strategy to grow the energy sector.

Iraqi cabinet approves gas deal with Turkmenistan
Baghdad ( – As part of the country's efforts to secure the fuel needed to operate power plants during the summer, Iraq revealed new developments in the gas deal with Turkmenistan. The Iraqi cabinet made several decisions on Tuesday aimed at resolving one of the country's most serious challenges. The Iraqi cabinet decided to move forward with a deal to import gas from Turkmenistan in quantities ranging from 14 to 15 million cubic meters per day, potentially providing an additional 2,000 megawatts of electricity. Iraq signed a memorandum of understanding in 2023 with Turkmenistan to import the gas it needs to operate its power plants, according to the Ministry of Electricity, which indicated that the step requires additional negotiations related to the mechanism of transporting gas through Iran. Power plants in Iraq depend on gas imports from Iran, which cover one-third of the country's energy needs. The gas supply agreement with Turkmenistan aims to provide Iraq with an average of 20 million cubic meters per day. This gas will be transported to Iraq via pipelines that connect Turkmenistan and Iran to compensate for the decreasing gas supplies from Tehran. This approach has been hindered by the Trade Bank of Iraq's (TBI) inability to issue a letter of credit to allow Iraq to pay for gas imports due to US sanctions on Iran. In May, the Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, visited Turkmenistan to accelerate the fulfillment of a gas supply contract with Iraq. Fadel indicated earlier that Iraq will get gas from Turkmenistan through Iran's pipeline network, which is connected to Iraq and will eventually serve the country's power plants. Over the next five years, the arrangement will allow Turkmen gas to be transported to Iraq across Iran.

Iraq starts running new electricity transmission line in Basra
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, declared on Monday that a new 480-megawatt electricity transmission line in the southern Iraqi province of Basra—the Faw 400 KV-Industrial Institute 132 KV line—is now operational. The ministry mentioned in a statement that the new electricity transmission line, which aims to improve the reliability of the electrical system in Basra and other areas in southern Iraq, went into operation for the first time on Monday, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported. This crucial line is part of the ministry's strategy to improve the infrastructure of the transmission network and attain energy sustainability in Basra and the southern provinces, according to Fadel. The initiative is also part of the technical solutions adopted by the ministry to address obstacles and enhance the efficiency of energy transmission systems. With a total capacity of 480 megawatts, the new transmission line spans 76 kilometers and consists of 244 transmission towers, providing a more reliable power supply to several areas in Basra, particularly Abu Al-Khasib District. The significance of the power transmission line extends beyond enhancing local service. As part of the electricity interconnection project with the Gulf States, which the Iraqi ministry seeks to carry out as a strategic step toward regional energy integration, it also intends to increase the network's adaptability.

Iraq carries out 1,000-megawatt solar energy project in Basra
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity is carrying out the Basra Sun solar power project, which is being developed in collaboration with French energy firm TotalEnergies. During a field visit on Saturday, Iraqi Electricity Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel stated that the project, which is expected to produce 1,000 megawatts, aligns with the government's goal of transitioning to clean energy in Iraq, according to a statement cited by the Iraqi News Agency (INA). The project will span around 9,000 dunams (nine square kilometers) of Basra's desert and will include over two million solar panels spread across four producing units. As part of a $27 billion deal, TotalEnergies is carrying out four large projects in southern Iraq, including the solar power plant. These projects include utilizing associated gas from several locations and expanding output from the Artawi field. According to Fadel, the solar project is among the largest renewable energy initiatives in Iraq and will address the country's increasing energy consumption, especially during peak hours. The project is anticipated to provide clean energy to the electrical system of the southern Iraqi province of Basra, improve its stability, and create new opportunities for investment in Iraq's renewable energy industry.

UGT Renewables plans 3,000-megawatt solar energy project in Iraq
Baghdad ( – In a move to support Iraq's efforts to diversify its energy sources, UGT Renewables, a well-known supplier of renewable energy solutions, plans to establish a large solar energy project in Iraq with a capacity of 3,000 megawatts. The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, met on Wednesday with the British Ambassador to Iraq, Irfan Siddiq, and other officials to discuss the details of the memorandum of understanding the Iraqi government signed last month with US-based UGT Renewables to build a 3,000-megawatt solar power plant in Iraq, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Electricity Ministry. The project includes the construction of energy storage systems with capacities of up to 500 megawatts, as well as 1,000 kilometers of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines to improve the efficiency and stability of Iraq's electricity grid. Fadel clarified that the ministry aims to produce 12,000 megawatts of solar energy by 2030, in addition to developing different renewable energy projects that will help achieve sustainable development and environmental preservation. The officials who attended the meeting underlined their desire to expand their collaboration with Iraq, reaffirming their commitment to transferring experience and modern technologies while also contributing to the Iraqi electrical sector's long-term growth. In light of the country's growing need for power, the Iraqi government is taking measures to diversify its energy sources and attain sustainability in the energy industry. In 2023, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity sought to sign contracts with big businesses, such as France-based TotalEnergies, to build a 1,000-megawatt power plant in Basra, and China-based PetroChina to develop another power plant in Muthanna with a capacity of 750 megawatts. The Iraqi cabinet has approved a plan to assign projects to specialized companies for the generation of 7,500 megawatts of solar energy by 2030. These initiatives are part of a broader national strategy that aims to produce a total of 12,000 megawatts of solar energy.
