'Fans Will Never Understand' – AmaZulu CEO Weighs in on pending SuperSport United Sale
AmaZulu CEO Sinenjabulo Zungu © Gerhard Duraan/BackpagePix Image: Backpages AmaZulu CEO Sinenjabulo Zungu has delivered a firm defence of football club executives amid the growing backlash to the proposed sale of SuperSport United, arguing that fans rarely understand the true pressures of running a professional team. SuperSport United's shock decision to sell their club to a private consortium has caused ripples across South African football and is currently pending approval from the Premier Soccer League (PSL). While the finer details of the transaction remain under wraps, the response from supporters — particularly those loyal to Matsatsantsa — has been overwhelmingly negative. But Zungu, speaking candidly about the realities of football ownership at the launch of the KZN Premiers' Cup, said it was important for people to grasp how complicated club operations are behind the scenes. 'Fans will never understand — running a football club is extremely expensive,' she said. 'It's not even a question of sympathy, because why would they have sympathy for someone else's business?' Zungu suggested that supporters often view clubs with emotional attachment, but do not appreciate the commercial and structural demands that influence decision-making. 'You hear people ask why they sold this player or why they bought that player, and that's because of a lack of understanding,' she said. 'We forgive them (the fans), because they don't know — and I didn't know as well before I got into football. But these are the decisions that get taken daily. It's not personal — it's survival.' The pending sale of SuperSport, a club that has operated for years under the SuperSport television brand, signals a major shift in South African football's commercial landscape. Zungu said such transitions should not be viewed purely through an emotional lens. 'It's important to note — we don't just wake up and decide to let go of people,' she explained. 'There are negotiations that take place, assessments that must be made, and long-term planning involved. These are the two driving forces of running a football club on a daily basis.'

Durban July fashion brings ‘Marvels of Mzansi' to life
The Greyville Racecourse and its surrounding areas are bustling with activity as thousands of people make their way in for the Hollywoodbets Durban July. The Witness reports that the annual event is the biggest horse racing event in Africa and arguably the most important event on South Africa's social calendar. This year, the event is themed 'Marvels of Mzansi' with early arrivals demonstrating the various interpretations one could have of the theme. Some have opted for colours synonymous with nature like brown and green as a nod to the country's rich natural landscape while others are draped in traditional garments and African prints. Marilyn Zungu says when she heard the theme she thought of Marvel Comics and superheroes which inspired her to wear a big gold bracelet like Wonder Woman and pick an outfit that had long, draped sleeves like a cape which often trails behind superheroes like Batman and Thor. 'To represent Mzansi, I selected an African print for the sleeves picked earrings shaped like the African continent,' Zungu says. Zungu says she came to the racecourse today as 'it's the place to be'. 'This is the biggest event happening in the country and on the continent today, so everyone should be here spreading love and beauty,' she says. Khanyi Zuma says she wanted her outfit to fit the theme by having earth tones, but still be vibrant because of the people and culture in South Africa. 'We have so much of truly breathtaking oceans and rivers in the country that bring tranquility, but also have such a diversity of cultures that bring great music and spicy foods,' Zuma says. Though the day is still young, one thing is certain, guests will use this theme to showcase not only the country's diverse landscapes and population but also the creativity of its citizens. Three men are set to go for their pre-trial conference at the Durban High Court for the three Mayville murders. Image: File Three men are set to go for a pre-trial conference at the Durban High Court for allegedly killing a competitor in their liquor business. After this, they allegedly went to kill an uMkhonto weSizwe Party member, fearing that he might avenge the killing of their competitor. The three men, Siphamandla Vulindlela Hlongwane, 41, from Ziyendane area in Mandeni, Ngcebo Treasure Luthuli, 33, from Mayville, and Thokozani Emmanuel Luthuli, 26, from Bhamshela, face 15 charges which include three counts of murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstance, unlawful possession of firearms, and unlawful possession of ammunition. The State is alleging that on February 29, 2024, Hlongwane shot and killed his competitor, Titus Khethana Sosibo, in the morning. After shooting Sosibo, Hlongwane is alleged to have collected the spent cartridge from the crime scene and left with his accomplice. Fearing that Mxolisi Peaceman Zungu, who was an active member of the MK Party, might avenge his friend's murder, Hlongwane sent Thokozani to kill Zungu in June last year. Zungu was shot on the morning of June 5 while walking with his partner after they had dropped their child at a daycare centre in Mayville. Additionally, the State alleges that Hlongwane and Ngcebo killed Khanyisani Ndlovu, who had come to buy liquor from Hlongwane. The duo allegedly robbed Ndlovu of his wallet before shooting him on March 23, 2024. 'From February 2024 to March 2024, Hlongwane and Ngcebo unlawfully possessed a prohibited firearm, a 9mm Parabellum Calibre Pietro Beretta Model Pistol. The serial number or other identifying mark has been removed or changed without the written permission of the Registrar,' read the indictment.
