Iconic Headington car receives more artistic decorations

An abandoned car – recently described as a 'cultural icon' – has had more decorations added to it. For over a month, the black and silver two-seater has been parked on London Road, near to Bury Knowle Park, and since then it has seemingly taken on a life of its own. While initially the decorations were limited to Christmas tinsel, in the following weeks a Budweiser bottle was smashed into its windscreen and a note left saying 'it's my birthday'. On top of being an art display, the car is also gaining a functional use, sporting flyers for local restaurants and the St Mary and St John Church. One resident claimed the car has become more iconic than the Headington Shark (Image: Oxford Mail) Such is its decor that, despite its dilapidated state, one local resident joking claimed it had become more recognisable than the famous Headington shark. He added: 'I noticed the smashed window a couple of weeks ago and I'm surprised nobody has shifted it yet.' Oxford City Council previously said its officers would visit the abandoned vehicle and initiate an investigation within one day of a report being made.

Smashed car on side of London Road decorated in Christmas tinsel

A car abandoned on London Road for at least a month has been decorated with Christmas tinsel in Oxford. The small black and silver vehicle is parked to the side of London Road in Headington, near to Bury Knowle Park. Since it was first photographed a month ago – when it was already in a dilapidated state – its front window has been smashed and much of its front has been torn off. In addition, it appears to have been decorated with blue Christmas tinsel, hanging from its wing mirror and windscreen wiper. READ MORE: The authority admitted criminal damage after its contractors seized Martin Young's Ford Escort from near his home despite it being legally parked on private land. The vehicle was later crushed. Mr Young's car was in poor condition after being vandalised and was parked on private land near to his home because the pensioner intended to repair it. But after reports the car had been abandoned, the contractor seized it under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978.

Body found in car near Gatwick Airport

A body has been found in a parked car at an industrial estate near Gatwick Airport. Police were called to Whittle Way in Northgate, Crawley, at 10.30am on Friday following reports that the body had been discovered. The vehicle, a white BMW, was covered in dust and appeared to be abandoned, with speculation the corpse could have been there for weeks, or even months. Council workers had put a warning notice on the car, which they believed to have been abandoned. The notice, dated May 19, warned the owner of the car of their intention to tow it away. Despite giving the owner seven days, the car was still in place at Northgate when the body was found. The white BMW had been mentioned on local Crawley Facebook posts in recent weeks, but people were unaware there was a dead body inside. 'If this is your car, my advice is to get it removed before the removal truck does,' a post said. 'It seems such a strange [situation] , the car looks in great condition … I just hope the owner is ok.' Forensic officers were seen examining the car, which was parked at a postal depot a few miles from Gatwick Airport. Sussex Police said they were yet to identify the body, that the death was 'not currently being treated as suspicious' and that a report is being prepared for the coroner. 'Enquiries are ongoing to identify the individual and establish the full circumstances of the situation,' the police said.

Wellington Council cops flak after damaged car sits in carpark for week

Photo: RNZ / Jazlyn Whales An abandoned car, which has sat damaged across multiple car parks on a busy Wellington street for more than a week, is due to be towed Tuesday. The silver sedan has broken windows, no plates and a piece of police tape wrapped around it, and is parked diagonally across two spaces by Waitangi Park on the corner of Oriental Parade and Herd Street. The police said, as the car wasn't blocking a roadway or posing a risk to the public, it was not their jurisdiction to tow it, but the Wellington City Council's. The council told RNZ on Tuesday as it wasn't a traffic safety hazard, it had been giving the owner of the vehicle time to organise its removal - but it had become clear that wasn't going to happen. The plan was to tow it and put it into storage that day. Local resident Jose Ubiaga said he had first seen the car a week ago, and he walked past it each morning. "I just assumed it would be there for a couple of days, not thinking a week later it would still be sitting there, damaged, taking up two parks, and looking like an eye-sore," he said. His post on social media had garnered a lot of angry comments from other Wellingtonians. He said it wasn't a good look. "It's little things like this that degrade our city, and don't help us at all," he said. "It's crazy that it's still there." Councillor Ben McNulty had responded to social media discussion about the car online, and said he had sent a "please explain" request to council staff earlier on Tuesday morning. Photo: RNZ / Jazlyn Whales He said it was clear they were aware of the car, as there was a yellow sticker on the windscreen. Usually, they waited a period of 48 hours for the owner to make contact, and then towed the vehicle. "It's just a billboard for council looking like it hasn't done it's job, because it hasn't on this one," he said. "You couldn't have put it in a much more prevalent spot in Wellington if you tried." But the council said as the car wasn't posing a safety risk - although its location had meant it had attracted a high amount of public interest - it had given the owner some extra leeway to remove it themselves. "It's obviously become clear that the owner isn't willing or able to do the job so we'll do it and aim to recover costs."
