Facing trial in federal court on charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transporting people for prostitution, he seemed diminished — a powerful man brought low by those he had allegedly harmed, an avatar of how even the loftiest realms of celebrity might not offer a buffer against accountability. It appeared as if Combs's life, his career, his public image would forever be changed. That his career had reached a cul-de-sac of his own making. On Wednesday, though, Combs was found not guilty on all charges apart from transportation to engage in prostitution, the least serious of them. He could be released on bond this afternoon. If the time since late 2023 — when Combs's ex-girlfriend Cassandra Ventura (the singer Cassie) filed a civil suit against him, which he settled in one day — has prophesied a fall from grace for Combs, Wednesday's verdict demonstrated the opposite: that even several weeks of grim testimony from his intimates, employees and others about how he flaunted power and resources to bend them to his will was not compelling enough to completely knock him from his perch. Combs largely escaped the fate of some other high-profile entertainment figures who have been held accountable in the #MeToo era. Had he been convicted across the board, he likely would have faced a full reputational shattering like Harvey Weinstein, once the most powerful man in film, who has been imprisoned on federal sex crimes since 2020. Or R. Kelly, once R&B's most formidable and popular star, who has been in prison since 2022 on sex-trafficking and racketeering charges. Combs would have been a villain who once was famous, not the other way around. RIYADH — Saudi Arabia's Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) has announced on Monday a new wave of criminal cases as part of its ongoing campaign to root out corruption and strengthen integrity across the Kingdom. The latest round of investigations has resulted in multiple high-profile arrests spanning customs, municipal affairs, the judiciary, education, healthcare, and security sectors. In a statement issued through official channels, Nazaha reaffirmed its firm commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance. Among the most notable cases, two customs employees and a broker were arrested after allegedly accepting SR400,000 in bribes to unlawfully expedite the import process for trucks. Meanwhile, in a separate case, a police officer and a municipal employee were detained for receiving SR110,000 from business owners in exchange for facilitating the illegal extraction and sale of metals from government buildings, a scheme that reportedly generated over SR4.6 million in profit. Judicial integrity also came under scrutiny, with a court clerk arrested after taking SR32,500, part of a promised SR65,000, to influence the outcome of a criminal case and secure an acquittal. In the education sector, a resident was taken into custody for receiving over SR230,000 to manipulate the awarding of subcontract work on Ministry of Education projects. Municipal corruption featured prominently in the new cases. One department head was found to have SR7.1 million in personal accounts linked to the illegal cancellation of commercial fines. Senior procurement officials in regional health clusters were arrested for soliciting bribes in exchange for awarding contracts. One official was also accused of offering SR100,000 to a colleague to manipulate contract outcomes. ICE Claims Agents Need to Wear Masks Due to Assaults. Here's the Truth
Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security have claimed multiple times since May that there's been a 413 percent increase in assaults against their agents to justify their officers wearing masks and refusing to identify themselves. The data states otherwise. The Washington Post's Philip Bump penned a column asserting the obvious—ICE officers are covering their faces and wearing plainclothes while they kidnap people off the street to 'avoid accountability' and make it 'harder to say precisely who had plucked up a college student or local mother and sent them to jail in another state.' Bump first raised the question in May in an article that had acting ICE Director Todd Lyons so incensed that he wrote a letter to the editor claiming a staggering increase in assaults, writing 'officers wear masks for personal protection and to prevent doxing.… Since President Donald Trump returned to office, ICE officers have seen a staggering 413 percent increase in assaults against them.' The use of a percentage here is very intentional, as it's easier to inflate and sensationalize. 'A 413 percent increase could mean that the number of assaults went from 200 in 2024 to 1,026 in 2025—or that it went from eight to 41.… There's a big difference between an increase of 826 assaults and an increase of 33—especially if some of those 'assaults' are of the Lander variety,' wrote Bump, who dug into the claim in a piece published Thursday. Bump found that assaults on agents had decreased every month since 2024 and, despite repeated requests to ICE, wasn't given any proof of ICE agents being doxxed, targeted, or assaulted outside the context of an immigration arrest. The organization that has conducted countless raids and crackdowns, kidnapped innocent people off the street, and handcuffed elected officials, is now trying to frame itself as the victim so that its officers can continue to feel big and strong behind the anonymity of their masks. 'We should not and cannot take ICE's representations about the need for its officers to obscure their identities at face value. That the organization would not provide evidence for its claims … diminishes the extent to which we should grant ICE the benefit of the doubt,' Bump wrote. 'Leaving the question I posed in May: Why are these officers covering their faces if not to avoid accountability?'
