Tom Cruise awarded Guinness World Record for "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" flaming parachute stunt
Tom Cruise has become a Guinness World Record titleholder for a fiery "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" stunt. In the stunt, Cruise jumps out of a helicopter and deploys a parachute, then lights it on fire. The parachute was pre-soaked in fuel and lit ablaze, the Guinness World Records said in a news release. Cruise had to jump from at least 7,500 feet, the organization said. The flaming parachute could only burn for about three seconds before Cruise had to cut it away and deploy a backup chute. And sometimes, he was doing it while holding a 50-pound camera rig. Cruise conducted the stunt not once, not twice — but 16 times, the Guinness World Records said, making him the record holder for "most burning parachute jumps by an individual." It's far from the first incredible stunt Cruise has performed in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise. Previous movies have featured him hang from the side of a plane, ride a motorcycle off a cliff and climb the world's tallest building. He is a licensed skydiver and has been a licensed pilot for over 30 years. In "Top Gun: Maverick," Cruise also performed a number of aerial stunts. "The audience can tell when something's been cheated, so it's important to be doing it all for-real," Wade Eastwood, a stunt coordinator on "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" told Guinness World Records. This is Cruise's second Guinness World Record. He holds a box office title for actor with the most consecutive $100-million-grossing movies. He has 11 movies that qualify, starting with 2012's "Jack Reader" and ending with "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning."

The fan-favourite 'Mission: Impossible' film series has been going strong since 1996, when Tom Cruise first played secret agent Ethan Hunt. Over the years, fans have watched him save the world again and again - often performing dangerous stunts himself. After breaking several box office records, Tom Cruise's performance in ' Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning ' earned him a Guinness World Record. He set the record for most burning parachute jumps by an individual after jumping out of a helicopter 16 times with a fuel-soaked chute set ablaze in a stunt for the final instalment in the action franchise, reported Deadline. "Tom doesn't just play action heroes - he is an action hero!" said Craig Glenday, Guinness World Records editor-in-chief in a statement. "A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It's an honour to be able to recognise his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title." Cruise and the stunt team spent weeks preparing for the action in Drakensberg, South Africa, before ascending more than 75,000 feet in the helicopter. The actor then jumped with the flaming parachute, cutting himself free and deploying a backup parachute. For several of the takes, Cruise had a 50-lb. Snorri camera rig attached to his body to get a closer shot of the fiery stunt, as per the outlet. In addition to Cruise, the cast includes Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Ving Rhames as Luther Strickell, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, Hayley Atwell as Grace, Esai Morales as the antagonist Gabriel, Shea Wigham as Jasper Briggs, Greg Tarzan Davis as Degas, and Pom Klementieff as the assassin Paris, as per the outlet.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Cruise now holds the title for the 'most burning parachute jumps by an individual,' with his jump count clocking in at 16 times. 'Tom doesn't just play action heroes – he is an action hero!' Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, said in a statement Thursday. 'A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do.' Glenday added that it's 'an honour to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title.' Cruise conducted the fiery jumps as a stunt while filming for 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,' the eighth film in the popular action franchise in which Cruise has starred since 1996. In a video posted posted to the official YouTube page for Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the film, Cruise is seen discussing logistics for the stunt with stunt coordinators, saying, 'I am going to be deploying. If this is twisted while it's burning, I am going to be spinning and burnt.' He later said in the clip that he wanted to be 'real smart, I'm not saying be risky,' adding with a smirk, 'We don't take risks… obviously.' The clip shows Cruise sky-diving out of the helicopter with his burning parachute all 16 times in rapid succession as the 'Mission: Impossible' theme song plays in the background. This latest stunt is far from the first daring feat Cruise has performed. In addition to his performance around the Olympic Games last summer, the actor is known for conducting his own stunts in his movies.
