India's financial crime fighting agency summons Google, Meta executives, sources say

July 19 (Reuters) - India's financial crime fighting agency has summoned executives of tech giants Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab and Meta (META.O), opens new tab to its headquarters on Monday as it investigates accusations of money laundering on online betting apps, two government sources said. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating whether the platforms eased the way for promotion and wider reach of betting apps through advertisements, the first source said. A date of July 21 has been set for the appearances at the agency's headquarters in the capital, New Delhi, the source added. A second government source accused Google and Meta of using their platforms to promote illegal activities, despite a government advisory against the advertisement of any form of betting. The agency will investigate Google and Meta over the funds they received from betting apps, the second source added, as well as checking if they were advertising or promoting any other betting platforms. Both sources sought anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to media. Google and Meta did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Betting and gambling pose "significant financial and socio-economic risks for consumers, especially youth and children," India's information and broadcasting ministry told television channels and digital media in an advisory, opens new tab in 2022. Promotion of offline or online betting and gambling through advertisements was not advised in the larger public interest, the ministry added. Domestic news agency ANI first reported the news.

‘An oversight:' TTC apologizes for ads that featured route error

The TTC is apologizing after a number of advertisements posted in subway cars encouraged riders to follow an impossible route from Spadina Station to Kensington Market. The advertisements are part of a wider campaign encouraging riders to use the TTC to get to some of Toronto's well-known neighbourhoods and destinations. The particular ad in question encouraged people to ride on the 506 streetcar from Spadina Station to the historic market. However, there was just one problem: while the 506 streetcar does pass by the northern border of Kensington Market along College Street it does not go to Spadina Station. The 510 Spadina streetcar, which passes by Kensington Market to the east, does serve Spadina Station. 'This was an oversight and we apologize for any confusion they may have caused,' TTC spokesperson Stuart Green said in a statement provided to CTV News. He said 'They should all be down by now. We have new/different ones coming out shortly as part of this ongoing campaign.' Pictures of the incorrect advertisements quickly made their way to social media. On a Toronto Reddit post, one user criticized TTC leadership as people who 'live in the suburbs and drive.' Another wrote that 'Nobody proof reads at the TTC' as what would have been a better route for the TTC to advertise would be taking the 510 streetcar from Spadina Station to Kensington Market. The 506 runs east from High Park through College, Carleton, and Gerrard to end at Main Street. While the 510's route is Spadina Station south towards Queens Quay and Union Station, with a stop at Nassau Street where Kensington Market is.

Take down vape ads before grace period ends, traders warned

Stubborn traders will be issued summonses and the cost of taking down the ads may be claimed from them, a state executive councillor said. PETALING JAYA : Vape traders in Selangor have been warned to take down advertisements promoting vape products sooner rather than later to avoid facing enforcement action. Selangor executive councillor Ng Suee Lim said he will discuss a deadline with health committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin, and that enforcement action will be taken after that date. 'The matter will be referred to and discussed with the health executive councilor before any follow-up action is taken,' he told FMT. With the decision on vape ads made by the state government last month, Ng said traders are being given sufficient time to take down their adverts, Harian Metro reported earlier. 'If after this period some are found not complying, the local councils will be ordered to carry out enforcement measures, including issuing summonses,' he was quoted as saying. Ng maintained that the state government understood the economic situation and the difficulties these traders faced, which was why there was a grace period for the vape ads. 'However, when the time comes and they are still disobeying the law, action will be taken. Stubborn traders will be issued summonses and the cost (of taking down the ads) may be claimed from them,' he added. In May, Jamaliah announced that all local councils in Selangor were ordered to immediately seize and remove vape ads as part of the state government's efforts to curb the use of the product. She cited 'deeply alarming' data from the 2022 National Health and Morbidity Survey which found that nearly 14.9% of boys aged 13 to 17 in Malaysia were vape users. However, the Selangor government has yet to decide to ban the sale of vapes as a whole, with a study of proposed guidelines ongoing. Several state governments have moved towards completely banning the sale of vapes, including Perlis, Terengganu, Kedah and Pahang, while Johor and Kelantan have banned the sale of these products since 2016 and 2015, respectively.

Hate Google TV home screen ads? There's a new one for you to ignore

Joe Maring / Android Authority TL;DR Google has started displaying a new Star Wars/Coca-Cola ad on Google TV home screens. The new ad is displayed at the top of the For You page and takes over the majority of the UI. Google TV has had similarly annoying ads for Taco Bell, March Madness, and more. As much as Google TV gets right, the platform's obsession with displaying advertisements and sponsored content is by far one of its greatest pitfalls. Most recently, one of the newest ads to hit people's Google TV screens is a giant advertisement for Star Wars-themed Coca-Cola cans. As spotted in the r/AndroidTV subreddit a few days ago, the new ad is found at the top of Google TV's For You page and overtakes most of your TV display. There's some Kylo Ren artwork behind Star Wars Coca-Cola cans, paired with a giant 'Sponsored by Coca-Cola' label. u/BarfingMonkey / Reddit Does this look bad? Yes. Is there any way to get rid of it? No. This has been the case for Google TV ads for a while now, and, unfortunately, this is just the latest example of Google's insistence on turning your Google TV home screen into a glorified billboard. We've been reporting on ongoing complaints about Google TV advertising for well over a year now, and it's something I experienced firsthand when I tried replacing my Apple TV 4K with a Google TV Streamer this past April. I saw similar full-screen ads for sponsored TV shows and movies at the top of the For You page, plus a Taco Bell ad with a giant QR code accompanying it. I was also served a Target-sponsored section further down the home page for March Madness videos. Frankly, it's a mess. Joe Maring / Android Authority Given Google's history with ads on Google TV, this newest Star Wars/Coca-Cola one isn't surprising, but it's still disappointing. There's a lot to like about Google TV, and the fact that Google feels it has to ruin it with constant advertisements like this is unfortunate. If you're fed up with Google TV ads, the good news is that you can use a third-party launcher to access all of your apps without being bombarded by these ads and other sponsored content. As many people in that Reddit thread suggest, Projectivity Launcher is the best way to do this. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ .
