Warm, sunny end to July 4th weekend in Philadelphia region before rain returns this week

The nice stretch of weather for the Fourth of July holiday will continue for one more day as we wrap up the weekend. Our Sunday will get off to a pleasant start with temperatures in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Because of the plentiful sunshine, temperatures will quickly warm back to near 90 degrees with just a little more humidity starting to make its way in from the south. A code orange air quality alert is in effect for the entire state of Delaware, plus Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Mercer counties, New Jersey, on Sunday. A code orange alert means the air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including the elderly, small children and those with respiratory issues. CBS News Philadelphia The increase in humidity will be the beginning of the increasing moisture that will feed into the area out of the tropics, which will make for a bit of an unsettled week ahead. So, consider this your official "Umbrella Alert" for next week. Each day will be humid with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees and a chance of showers or thunderstorms. Monday's rain differs from the rest of the week because it will be the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal. CBS News Philadelphia The storm is expected to make landfall in South Carolina early Sunday morning and travel northward, dumping 4-6 inches of rain while rapidly weakening to a remnant area of low pressure as it tracks north through North Carolina and Virginia. A cold front sweeping eastward across the region will guide Chantal's remnants across Philadelphia on Monday. Scattered thunderstorms and showers are possible, mainly in the afternoon and evening, and will bring the threat for heavy rainfall along with some gusty winds. CBS News Philadelphia Tuesday through Friday, a series of disturbances will move across the region, bringing daily scattered showers and storms. Here's your 7-day forecast: CBS News Philadelphia Sunday: Sunny, more humid. High 90, Low 67. Monday: Scattered storms. High 86, Low 75. Tuesday: Scattered storms. High 90, Low 74. Wednesday: Isolated thunderstorm. High 90, Low 73. Thursday: Scattered storms. High 85, Low 72. Friday: Scattered storms, High 84, Low 71. Saturday: Stray thunderstorms. High 82, Low 71. These maps show how quickly Fourth of July fireworks diminish air quality

There's one night of the year where celebrations across the United States light up the map like no other. It's the Fourth of July — when fine particulates fill the air. The impact fireworks can have on air quality can be quite striking and seemingly outsized given their relatively small explosive force. And there have been stark examples in recent years of poor air quality spiking after the Fourth of July. In 2019 in D.C., for one, the smoke got so bad that many couldn't actually see the fireworks, and crews filming the spectacle flipped back and forth to file footage.

Kirklees Council set to lift air pollution zones in Birkenshaw and Ravensthorpe

Measures to tackle pollution in three West Yorkshire areas are set to be lifted after improvements in air quality were recorded. Kirklees Council put 10 air quality management areas (AQMAs) in place between 2008 and 2019 in a bid to tackle rising pollution. The AQMAs require local authorities to monitor air quality and improve councillors will review proposals to revoke three of those, in Cooper Bridge and Bradley on the A62, Birkenshaw and part of Ravensthorpe at a meeting on 8 July. Another three areas at Ainley Top, Liversedge and Thornton Lodge are expected to be amended to cover smaller remaining four, in Huddersfield town centre, Eastborough, Edgerton and Outlane, are likely to be retained. The local authority said the recommendations followed consultation with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and councillors in the areas affected. A "continued reduction" in roadside air pollution had driven the proposed changes, the council added. 'Healthier lives' The only yearly increase since 2017 had been in 2021 when lockdown restrictions ended and traffic returned to the roads, according to a report going before councillors. The AQMA for Cooper Bridge and Bradley, along part of the A62 Leeds Road between Huddersfield and Mirfield, was first imposed in 2008. Similar measures were then put in place for Scouthill in Ravensthorpe the following year, before Birkenshaw was made an AQMA in Beverley Addy, cabinet member for public health, said: "This is fantastic news for Kirklees. "Cleaner air brings real benefits to everyone, especially to young children and those with health conditions. "The fact that we're seeing such improvements really does mean people will live healthier lives." EPA approves laxer air quality program for West Virginia

EPA has given final sign-off to a West Virginia haze reduction plan over the objections of parks advocates who say that it will set back long-term headway in clearing the air in dozens of iconic locales around the country. 'Gone are the days of burying our states in administrative nonsense,' EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said in a Tuesday news release announcing approval of the state's plan under what is formally known as the regional haze program. The approval marks a reversal of the agency's stance under the Biden administration and sets a precedent for other states seeking to relax their haze control regimens. Advertisement While EPA press aides did not respond Tuesday to requests for a copy of the final rule, the draft version released in April signaled a major policy change that effectively makes it easier for states to meet haze reduction goals for 156 national parks and wilderness areas without imposing new pollution control requirements on power plants and other industries.

Sheikh Hamdan unveils air quality plan and support for Emiratis in future job markets

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, on Thursday chaired the Dubai Executive Council meeting, with education and efforts to boost air quality high on the agenda. The council approved a project to attract top international universities to the emirate while putting together the Academic and Career Guidance Policy. This, Sheikh Hamdan said, will help Emirati students in future job markets with targeted academic and career support, setting a target that 90 per cent of all Emirati graduates will find employment within six months of graduation. Sheikh Hamdan also unveiled a long-term air quality plan as part of a broader drive to bolster the environment and improve quality of life. 'Today, I chaired The Executive Council meeting and approved a set of policies and strategies to reinforce Dubai's position as a global hub for education and future-ready talent,' he wrote on X. 'We approved a project to attract top international universities, aiming to position Dubai among the world's top 10 destinations for undergraduate and postgraduate students.' The aim is for international students to comprise 50 per cent of all university enrolments in Dubai by 2033. The higher education sector is also expected to contribute Dh5.6 billion to the emirate's GDP by this time, Dubai Media Office reports. The initiative aims to establish Dubai as one of the world's top 10 cities for students, with over 70 higher education institutions planned by 2033, including 11 ranked within the top 200 globally. To achieve this, the project sets out to improve student visa systems, new international scholarships, work visas for graduates, and introduce strategies to attract prestigious universities. 'Aligned with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision for a knowledge-based economy, the project will be implemented in partnership with KHDA and the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism,' Sheikh Hamdan added. 'We also approved the Academic and Career Guidance Policy to help Emirati students thrive in future job markets through targeted academic and career support.' A focus on the environment The Crown Prince of Dubai also revealed the approval of the Air Quality Strategy 2030, while also setting out plans for a new centre to mediate legal disputes. The clean air initiative follows a similar project announced in February, known as the Super Block initiative, which will target urban areas to make them more pedestrian-friendly. It is hoped that this will enhance quality of life, sustainability and boost social interaction between communities. It also aims to reduce carbon emissions by designating car-free residential areas and increasing green spaces. Areas such as Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama, and Al Quoz Creative Zone will be the first to be boosted by the initiative. 'Enhancing quality of life remains a key priority. We approved the Air Quality Strategy 2030, which will be implemented by Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority, in partnership with relevant entities, with the aim of fostering a healthy and safe environment for all,' he continued. 'During the meeting, we also approved the Dubai International Mediation Centre project to provide an efficient and transparent platform for alternative dispute resolution. 'We also approved the Governance Policy for Government Construction Projects to standardise procedures, enhance transparency, strengthen private-sector partnerships, and ensure efficient delivery and high-quality outcomes.'
