Air India plane skids and damages runway after reports of three burst tyres

An Air India Airbus A320 veered off the runway at Mumbai International Airport on Monday while landing during heavy rain, damaging the underside of one of its engines and briefly shutting the runway. All passengers and crew from Air India flight AI2744, which had flown from Kochi, have since disembarked. The airline did not confirm if anyone was injured. The Mumbai airport said in a statement there were "minor damages reported to the airport's primary runway" due to what it described as a "runway excursion", and a secondary runway had been activated to ensure operational continuity. The aircraft has been grounded for checks, Air India added. A Times of India report, citing sources, said three tyres had burst on the aircraft after the landing. TV footage from NDTV and India Today showed the outer casing of the engine damaged, with some apparent cracks. Air India has come under intense scrutiny after a Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed in the Indian city of Ahmedabad last month, killing 260 people. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency said earlier this month it plans to investigate its budget airline, Air India Express, after Reuters reported the carrier did not follow a directive to change engine parts of an Airbus A320 in a timely manner and falsified records to show compliance.

Man killed after being sucked into aircraft engine in Italy

A man has been killed after being sucked into an aircraft engine at a Milan airport, Italian media reported. All flights have been suspended at Milan Bergamo, Italy's third-busiest airport, since 10.20am local time. Sacbo, the airport's operators, have confirmed an 'incident' forced the suspension of operations at the airport. According to Corriera Della Sera, one of Italy's main newspapers, the person was sucked into the plane engine as it began to manoeuvre before taking off for Asturias in Spain. It is unclear whether the victim was a passenger or an airport worker.

No injuries after JetBlue plane rolls onto grass at Boston's Logan Airport after landing

A JetBlue flight at Boston Logan International Airport veered onto grass while turning off a runway during landing Thursday. The runway was closed as JetBlue flight 312 was assessed and its passengers were deplaned by stairs and bused into the terminal, airport officials with Massport told CNN. The Airbus A220 was coming from Chicago O'Hare International Airport, and the incident happened around 11:55 a.m. local time. The airplane was new, according to Federal Aviation Administration records, and had been manufactured in 2024. There were no injuries reported, Massport officials said. 'Safety is JetBlue's top priority,' the airline said in a statement. 'We will conduct a full investigation of the incident and will work closely with the relevant authorities to understand the cause.' Tyesha Best, president of Transport Workers Union of America Local 579, said the union is 'aware of the event.' The union represents JetBlue's flight attendants. 'All crew and customers are safe,' Best said in a statement to CNN. 'We remain in contact with the company to provide all needed support for those affected.' The FAA has lifted a ground stop issued earlier Thursday at the airport for an emergency. The Boston airport was under a ground delay Thursday afternoon impacting about 14% of departing flights, according to flight data tracker FlightAware. The FAA is investigating the incident. This story has been updated with additional information.

JetBlue plane rolls off runway after landing at Boston Logan Airport

A JetBlue plane rolled off the runway while attempting to land at Boston Logan International Airport on Thursday. The Massachusetts Port Authority stated that there were no reported injuries, and it is not yet known what caused the plane to veer off. Security footage from the airport showed passengers exiting the Airbus A220 by the stairs after the aircraft came to a stop in a grassy area. The Independent has emailed JetBlue for comment. In a statement to The New York Times, the airline said: 'Safety is JetBlue's top priority. We will conduct a full investigation of the incident and will work closely with the relevant authorities to understand the cause.' Airport officials stopped flights from coming in and out of Boston Logan around noon following the rollover. The ground halt was lifted after 1 p.m. The aircraft departed Chicago O'Hare airport around 8.41 a.m with FlightAware data showing the plane landed in Boston around 11.49 a.m. The incident happened on the same day that 241 people were confirmed dead after an Air India plane crashed in Ahmedabad, a city on the western side of India. The aircraft was headed to London Gatwick Airport and was carrying 242 passengers and crew and there was one sole survivor. At least 41 people are being treated for injuries.

Masturbating American Airlines passenger gropes horrified seatmate but claims he was just ‘stretching,' feds say

A Texas man is accused of masturbating openly while groping at the dumbstruck passenger sitting next to him aboard an American Airlines flight from Boston to Washington, D.C., later denying any wrongdoing and insisting to police that he had merely been 'stretching his arms.' Aerospace executive Darrell Ray Seale, 56, continued to touch his seatmate's crotch and leg even after the man demanded he stop, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Independent. In an email on Thursday, Seale's court-appointed lawyer, Todd Richman, declined to comment on the allegations. Seale, who was released Tuesday on a personal recognizance bond following his June 8 arrest on one count of abusive sexual contact, was unable to be reached. Last year, the FBI, which has jurisdiction over in-flight crimes, investigated 104 cases involving allegations of sexual assault aboard aircraft. The actual number of incidents could in fact be higher, since many incidents go unreported, according to the bureau. On June 6, Seale boarded American Airlines flight 4349 at Boston Logan International Airport, bound for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, states the affidavit, which was filed Monday in Alexandria, Virginia, federal court and has not been previously reported. After the 110-minute flight got underway, Seale, who was in a window seat, began 'masturbating through his shorts, rubbing his penis,' the affidavit goes on, citing an interview the alleged victim gave to FBI agents. 'Seale then lowered his tray table and then began touching [his seatmate's] penis over his pants,' the affidavit contends. '[The seatmate] told him to stop by raising his hand, but Seale continued to touch [him] by putting his fingers through the hole in [the man's] pants and rubbing [his] leg.' Another passenger sitting across the aisle saw Seale touch the man's left thigh, put his hand on his crotch, and 'observed him fondle [his] penis,' the affidavit continues. It says the passenger across the aisle then watched Seale's seatmate ''raise [his] right hand' towards Seale to 'make the universal 'stop' sign.'' Seale initially moved his hand away, according to the affidavit. But, it says he soon continued molesting the man, prompting the passenger across the aisle to intervene. They typed a message on their phone, reading, 'Are you OK?' and showed it to Seale's seatmate, who shook his head 'no,' the affidavit states. When Seale subsequently got up to use the restroom, the target of his unwanted affections informed a flight attendant about what had happened and was promptly seated elsewhere for the remainder of the trip, the affidavit says. When the flight landed in D.C., airport police escorted Seale off the plane, according to the affidavit. Officers called in the FBI, and agents arrived to question the suspect. He 'acknowledged sitting next to' the alleged victim, and admitted to 'possibly making contact with him while stretching his arms,' the affidavit states. At the same time, it says Seale 'denied ever touching him in a sexual way and denied ever exposing his own genitalia.' But, Seale's story didn't line up with the narratives provided by his seatmate and the passenger across the aisle, and Seale was arrested two days later as he prepared to board a departing flight from Reagan National. 'He again denied that he touched [his seatmate] in any sexual way, but acknowledged that he observed [him] put up his hand in the 'stop' signal,' the affidavit states. 'Seale said he believed [the man] was telling him to stop touching him while stretching.' In March, American Airlines permanently banned a serial harasser following his third accusation of in-flight sexual misconduct. That same month, a New York City fashion executive filed a lawsuit against American, claiming the passenger sitting next to her masturbated for a full hour aboard a flight to Milan but that the cabin crew did nothing to stop him. Last year, a New Jersey woman sued the carrier over claims she was sexually assaulted by a fellow traveler on a night flight from Charlotte, North Carolina to Newark. Seale is now living under his brother-in-law's supervision in Trophy Club, Texas, according to a June 10 order setting the conditions of his release. He is prohibited from leaving the Eastern District of Texas except to appear in court, barred from possessing any weapons and is not allowed to board any commercial flights without permission from the court. If convicted, Seale faces up to two years in prison.
