Iraq's highest judge steps down for medical reasons
Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council on Sunday confirmed the retirement of Jassim Mohammed Aboud al-Amiri, Chief of the Federal Supreme Court, the nation's highest judicial authority. In a statement, the council announced that a committee formed under the amended Federal Supreme Court Law No. 30 of 2005 approved al-Amiri's retirement due to health reasons. It nominated Munther Ibrahim Hussein, Deputy President of the Federal Court of Cassation, as his replacement, with the appointment now awaiting a presidential decree. Al-Amiri's departure follows the June 19 resignation of nine Supreme Court judges — six permanent members and three alternates — who stepped down just before the court was scheduled to rule on the Kurdistan Region salary dispute and the maritime border agreement with Kuwait. While early reports suggested Aboud had resigned with them, judicial officials later clarified he had instead retired for medical reasons. The nominated replacement, Hussein, born in Baghdad in 1963, earned a law degree from the University of Baghdad and graduated from the Judicial Institute in 1998. He has served on the Federal Court of Cassation since 2018, currently holding roles as deputy president, head of its criminal panel, and reserve member of the Supreme Court.

Iraq's Fatah Alliance backs Iranian retaliation against Israel
Shafaq News/ On Saturday, Fatah Alliance leader Hadi al-Amiri, a key figure in the Iraqi Iran-aligned Coordination Framework (CF), endorsed Tehran's missile response to Israeli strikes. In a statement, al-Amiri condemned the recent Israeli operation as a 'cowardly assault' and a sign of what he described as the 'Zionist project's failure to confront the Axis of Resistance,' an Iran-led regional alliance comprising groups including Lebanon's Hezbollah, Iraqi factions, and Yemen's Houthis (Ansarallah). He reaffirmed Iran's right to retaliate, calling the response a 'legitimate and moral duty,' and warned that remaining silent would amount to complicity. 'We hold the US fully responsible for the Israeli violation of Iraqi airspace,' al-Amiri added, urging the Iraqi government to take immediate steps to prevent further incursions. He also called on Muslims worldwide to adopt a unified stance against what he labeled as a shared adversary that 'recognizes no borders, sects, or nations.' Al-Amiri stressed that the Palestinian issue remains central despite growing normalization efforts in the region. 'Palestine remains at the heart of the struggle,' he noted, describing normalization as betrayal. His comments follow Israel's launch of Operation Rising Lion on Friday, a sweeping air campaign targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites across multiple provinces, including Tehran, Hamedan, East Azerbaijan, and Kermanshah. Some strikes also hit residential areas, resulting in civilian casualties.

EXCLUSIVE: Iraq's PMF Law set for official approval in upcoming session
Shafaq News/ Iraqi political blocs have agreed to finalize the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Service and Retirement Law in the next parliamentary session, MP Rafiq Al-Salihi revealed on Monday. Al-Salhi, from the Al-Sadiqun Bloc, told Shafaq News, 'The heads of political blocs, along with Badr Organization head Hadi al-Amiri, held a meeting on Monday to resolve the PMF Law and agreed to include it in the agenda of the upcoming parliamentary session to ensure its official approval.' "The retirement provision," he added, "will remain unchanged, set at age 60, with Prime Minister [Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani] granted the authority to extend service by an additional five years for qualifying PMF members, based on criteria to be defined." Earlier today, the Iraqi Parliament's Presidency withdrew the session agenda after the arrival of al-Amiri at the Parliament building. The decision, according to a parliamentary source, followed a meeting between al-Amiri, First Deputy Speaker Mohsen al-Mandalawi, and leaders of political blocs in the Shiite Coordination Framework to resolve the PMF Law.

Source: Iraqi Parliament cancels Monday's session after meeting with Badr Organization
Shafaq News/ On Monday, the Iraqi Parliament's Presidency withdrew the session agenda after the arrival of Hadi al-Amiri, head of the Badr Organization, at the Parliament building. A parliamentary source told Shafaq News, 'The decision to cancel the session followed a meeting between al-Amiri, First Deputy Speaker Mohsen al-Mandalawi, and leaders of political blocs in the [Shiite] Coordination Framework to resolve the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Service and Retirement Law." Earlier, MP Abbas al-Jubouri attributed the delay in voting on the PMF Law to a provision that would retire nearly 4,000 fighters from the era of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, which held up the vote.
