Conflicting reports on Lebanese response to US paper
Conflicting reports on Lebanese response to US paper Sources from the presidential panel drafting Lebanon's response to the U.S. paper have said that 'the atmosphere of the discussions is very positive,' in remarks to al-Joumhouria newspaper. 'The viewpoints are all intersecting on what serves Lebanon's interest, which can be certainly secured through halting Israeli attacks and Israel's commitment to the ceasefire agreement, the release of the Lebanese captives and withdrawal from the Lebanese areas it is occupying,' the sources added. A political leader meanwhile told the daily that 'the U.S. paper is not sacred' and is merely 'the beginning of a discussion.' 'The Americans are saying that it is an opportunity for a political solution and our stance is known to be supportive of political solutions. We are approaching it through keenness on Lebanon's interest, which means that Lebanon's interest comes first and that we reject anything that contradicts with this interest,' the political leader added. Asked about Hezbollah's arms, the leader said 'the president has assumed the responsibility of addressing the file of arms in a calm manner.' Informed sources meanwhile told the al-Anbaa news portal of the Progressive Socialist Party that 'things are headed to solutions' and that 'Hezbollah has become convinced that clinging to its arms might bring it harm and make it once again subject to U.S.-backed Israeli strikes.' 'Nothing prevents a repetition of the scenario that was followed with Hamas in the South, Dahieh and Beirut, and accordingly Hezbollah is not willing to engage in a new adventure with Israel,' the sources added. An-Nahar newspaper meanwhile said that Hezbollah 'has not facilitated the mission of the tripartite committee' formed by President Joseph Aoun, Speaker Nabih Berri and PM Nawaf Salam, and that 'the committee received several Hezbollah conditions through Berri's representative that called for rejecting submission to the U.S. and Israeli demands, which at best reflects an intransigent stance.'

Reports of fighters build-up on Syria-Lebanon border are 'baseless'
by Naharnet Newsdesk 13 hours Security on Lebanon's eastern border with Syria is 'under control' and 'sponsored by Saudi Arabia' and the reports about a build-up of foreign fighters on the frontier are 'baseless,' senior diplomatic sources told the al-Anbaa news portal of the Progressive Socialist Party. The unconfirmed reports had said that fighters were mobilizing on the border for possible military action against Hezbollah. 'The issue is under control by the four Lebanese-Syrian joint committees that were formed under direct Saudi supervision and there is no fear of a possible security deterioration in the aforementioned areas,' the sources added. 'Joint cooperation between Lebanese, Syrian and Saudi security agencies led to the seizure of a huge shipment of captagon pills that was en route from Syria to Saudi Arabia through Lebanon and this is an example of effective security coordination,' the sources went on to say.

Barrack talks Lebanon with Saudi official, seeks 'step-by-step' Lebanon-Israel solution
by Naharnet Newsdesk 27 June 2025, 12:59 U.S. envoy Tom Barrack has said that Hezbollah has vanished militarily and that Lebanon might join the Abraham peace accords, Al-Jadeed television reported. 'The U.S. envoy met in Riyadh with Prince Yazid bin Farhan in a bilateral meeting that stretched until late hours of the night and the Lebanese file was on the table,' Al-Jadeed added. Kuwait's al-Anbaa newspaper meanwhile said that Barrack gave Lebanese officials a deadline that ends on July 10 to respond to the U.S. demands. 'There are consultations between the three presidents (Joseph Aoun, Nabih Berri and Nawaf Salam) to reach a unified vision for responding to the demands carried by Barrack during his visit,' parliamentary sources told al-Anbaa, adding that the U.S. envoy is expected to return to Beirut within days to listen to the Lebanese response to the so-called U.S. working paper. The paper 'tackles the various aspects of the Lebanese file, from the issue of Lebanese and Palestinian arms to the issue of the northern, eastern and southern lands borders and Israeli withdrawal,' al-Anbaa added. 'While Barrack is expected to return to Lebanon in the first half of July, reports said that he prefers that the Lebanese side make a first move before the U.S. asks Israel to make a step in return, which would launch a step-by-step policy, leading to further steps by Lebanon in return for a faster Israeli withdrawal, the start of the handover of captives, and talks over the 13 contested border points,' the daily said. 'If this process goes as planned, Lebanon will be able to get grants and incentives from the international community related to reconstruction and to activating the reform process, but before anything else things hinge on beginning to hand over arms north of the Litani so that the step-by-step process can get on track,' the newspaper added. 'The U.S. administration is insisting on a quick and official Lebanese answer, without ambiguity or procrastination as happened several times, seeing as the international community is focused on other matters and believes that this is a chance that Lebanon should not miss,' al-Anbaa added.

Report: Security forces on high alert to foil any terror plot
by Naharnet Newsdesk 25 June 2025, 13:41 Lebanese security agencies have been put on maximum alert to thwart potential terrorist attacks following the church attack in Syria, Kuwait's al-Anbaa newspaper has reported. 'Officials have stressed the need to control things domestically and carry out preemptive steps to confront potential terrorist attacks targeted against places of worship or other sites,' the daily said. 'There are instructions to preserve internal stability and prevent any chaos in the Lebanese arena, and to this end measures have been taken on the ground on the border with Syria and in many areas inside Lebanon,' the newspaper added. 'The measures were not announced, in order to avoid stirring sensitivities,' the daily said. The Lebanese Army said Tuesday that it arrested the suspected leader of the Islamic State group in Lebanon after implicating him in planning several operations. The announcement came days after a suicide bomber killed at least 25 people in a church in neighboring Syria, with authorities there blaming IS.

Lebanon may propose that US envoy mediate to halt Israeli escalation, resolve disputes
by Naharnet Newsdesk 08 June 2025, 11:03 Officials close to President Joseph Aoun have floated the idea that a U.S. envoy carry out continuous negotiations between Lebanon and Israel to halt the Israeli escalation and try and find solutions for the disputed border points and the captives file, Kuwait's al-Anbaa newspaper has reported. 'They are relying on the fact that U.S. envoy to Syria Tom Barrack, who is of Lebanese origins, can carry out this mission in light of his closeness to U.S. Presiden Donald Trump and his preliminary success in the Syrian file until now, and also because he greatly understands the Lebanese situation and the Lebanese thinking,' al-Anbaa said. 'What's important is for Tel Aviv to accept such a proposal, seeing as it is reiterating its stance on the need to disarm Hezbollah north of the Litani River … while accusing Hezbollah of rebuilding its military arsenal through manufacturing drones,' al-Anbaa added.
