Expert comments on state of GERD funding and involvement from the US and Arab world
A Professor of Geology and Water Resources at Cairo University Abbas Sharaky discussed US President Donald Trump's statements regarding US funding for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). During a phone interview with Amr Adib on his show 'al-Hekaya' (The Story), on MBC Masr, Sharaky said that Egypt has been urging countries from the beginning not to finance any projects without Egypt's approval. 'Indeed, there is no funding from the World Bank or the European Union, but there is indirect funding from some countries, including the US,' he noted. Sharaky pointed out that China is financing the electricity grid and turbines with approximately two billion dollars, via Chinese banks. He also explained that the company currently building GERD is an Italian company. 'There is a well-known businessman of Ethiopian origin who was involved in GERD and has investments, but most of the primary investments are from Ethiopians themselves,' he said. Sharaky noted that the US grants Ethiopia approximately one billion dollars annually, which the Ethiopian government can use for the GERD and other projects. He referred to statements made by the US ambassador to Addis Ababa in 2021, in which the ambassador said that the US had provided approximately three billion dollars to Ethiopia over the previous three years. Sharaky stated: 'These three years were during Trump's first term.' He explained that Ethiopia announced in February 2011 that the cost of GERD was $4.8 billion, adding: 'But I believe it exceeded eight billion dollars, and perhaps even surpassing $10 billion.' Sharaky explained that most of the announced funding is from within Ethiopia through bonds issued by Ethiopians both at home and abroad. He added however that several nations, including an Arab country, invested three billion dollars in Ethiopia in 2018, including one billion in the Central Bank of Ethiopia, which the Ethiopian government can direct in any direction – such as with the GERD project.

Heatwave continues across Egypt on Sunday
A member of the Egyptian Meteorological Authority's (EMA) media center, Manar Ghanem, said that the country is currently experiencing a rise in temperatures of two degrees Celsius above the normal average for this time of year. During a phone interview with TV host Amr Adib on the 'al-Hekaya' (The Story) on MBC Masr on Saturday, Ghanem added that the current perceived temperature in Cairo on Sunday is 40C. She explained that the extension of the Indian monsoon low is the main reason behind this heatwave, in addition to the continued high humidity levels further increasing the feeling of heat. Maximum temperatures will record a slight drop on Monday, reaching 36C in Cairo, she added, with very hot weather continuing, especially in the inland governorates. Coastal areas meanwhile will see a relative drop in temperatures due to the influence of the sea. The expert noted that humidity levels will rise significantly during the night, increasing the feeling of heat, especially in enclosed and poorly ventilated spaces. Ghanem warned against direct exposure to the sun during the midday hours, especially between 12 pm and three pm, stressing the importance of wearing hats and sunglasses, and keeping well-hydrated. Shocking new revelations over death of Nawal al-Degwy's grandson
Shocking new developments have arisen regarding the death of Ahmed al-Degwy, the grandson of Nawal al-Degwy, after the family's lawyer Mohamed Hamouda put forward new evidence that suggests his death was not a suicide. During a phone interview with TV host Amr Adib on the 'al-Hekaya' (The Story) show on Friday, Hamouda said that all the rumors circulating about Ahmed's suicide do not stand up to scrutiny. He assured that his client did not suffer from any psychological disorders, as some believe. The family's lawyer added that several eyewitnesses reported hearing what sounded like an argument inside the villa where the incident occurred, moments before the sound of gunfire. This, he said, reinforces the possibility that other parties are involved in the case. Hamouda continued, 'There are extremely dangerous people responsible for Ahmed al-Degwy's death and all these issues.' The family's lawyer stated that investigations are still ongoing, noting that the Public Prosecution is re-examining the crime scene, revealing new information, including the presence of another gun in the incident. Hamouda concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the only body authorized to announce the facts is the Public Prosecution, expressing his confidence in its ability to uncover the full truth soon.

Ahmed al-Degwy's family has doubts about his suicide: Amr Adib
Egyptian TV host Amr Adib, the presenter of 'al-Hekaya' (The Story) show, revealed details of a phone call he had with Amr al-Degwy, the brother of the late Ahmed al-Degwy, who reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. During his program on Monday evening, he said he had a very difficult call with Amr al-Degwy, whose wife confirmed that he hadn't slept for days. According to Adib, Amr al-Degwy had told him that his late brother Ahmed was the family's pride and joy. 'I asked him, 'Do you have any doubts about his death?' He said, 'Of course,' without thinking much about it. He told me that Ahmed had just returned from his trip and was in a good mood and believed the crisis could be resolved. But when he arrived in Egypt, he was agitated and said that someone was watching him.' Adib continued, quoting Amr: 'Ahmed asked me to go to him, and messages were sent to try to reach a solution with the other party, but the answer was: 'No solution, no reconciliation. This is our mother's revenge, and we must take it back,' referring to the late Mona al-Degwy. Adib added 'Amr said that during the washing and autopsy, he learned that Ahmed had committed suicide with his left hand, even though he is right-handed, not left-handed. He said they were firmly convinced that he had been murdered.' Adib noted that the production team of the show contacted the other party's lawyer, but the response was that no statements would be made until the mourning period ends, and that a response is expected later. The funeral prayer for Ahmed al-Degwy, the grandson of Nawal el-Degwy, Chair of the Board of Trustees of October University for Modern Sciences and Arts, who died on Sunday from a gunshot wound inside his apartment in 6th of October City, was held at the MSA University's Mosque following the noon prayer.
