Israel targets Quds Force liaison in Beirut drone strike
Shafaq News – Beirut The Israeli military announced on Friday that it had killed Qassem Salah al-Husseini, a Lebanese operative linked to Iran's Quds Force, in a drone strike in Lebanon the previous day. Israel's army spokesperson stated that al-Husseini had been planning attacks against Israeli civilians and military personnel along the northern front. The army described him as a 'key figure' involved in smuggling weapons from Iran through Syria to various locations along the northern border and into the occupied West Bank. He was reportedly connected to arms dealers in both Syria and Lebanon. — افيخاي ادرعي (@AvichayAdraee) July 4, 2025 Earlier this week, an Israeli drone struck a civilian vehicle on the Khaldeh highway, south of Beirut. The agency did not provide details on the target's identity or the extent of the damage. The strike comes despite a ceasefire in place since November that ended a bloody round of fighting between Hezbollah and Israel. From November 27, 2024, to June 30, 2025, Israel committed 3,799 violations of the ceasefire agreement with Lebanon. These included 1,771 ground breaches, over 1,916 airspace violations, and 112 maritime infractions. As a result of these violations, 195 people were killed and 433 others were injured.

Khamenei's representative to Shafaq News: No retreat from supporting resistance factions
Shafaq News – Basra Iran will continue supporting armed 'resistance factions' in Iraq and across the region, Mujtaba al-Husseini, the representative of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei in Iraq, told Shafaq News on Wednesday. Describing the groups' growing military strength as a source of fear for their adversaries, al-Husseini vowed that 'Iron Dome and Israeli weapons proved ineffective in the war with the Islamic Republic.' According to al-Husseini, the influence of Islamic resistance movements has expanded across Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, and beyond. This regional presence , he claimed, 'is the main reason behind US and Israeli efforts to target Iran.' He also condemned the recent Israeli attack as 'treacherous,' noting that it came at a time when Washington was speaking of negotiations. 'They took us by surprise with war. Iran has to defend itself and support the resistance forces,' he remarked. Al-Husseini also accused the United States of 'supporting over 20,000 institutions aimed at weakening religious identity.' These organizations, he alleged, operate under the guise of promoting freedom, democracy, and liberation, while 'working against the values of local populations.' Earlier, Iranian Consul in Najaf Sayyed Saeed Al-Sayyedin told Shafaq News that Tehran no longer trusts US guarantees, referencing the 2018 American withdrawal from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). 'Washington breached the nuclear agreement, and that's why Iran has no confidence in the United States,' he stated, rejecting any suggestion that Tehran initiated its current military confrontation with Israel. 'Iran did not start the war with Israel, nor did it seek to end it,' he asserted.

Iraq's political row erupts over US "suspicious" business deals
Shafaq News/ Iraq's recent energy and trade agreements with US companies have drawn political criticism, with concerns raised over their economic value and geopolitical implications. Yasser al-Husseini, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Economy and Industry, described the deals as 'continuing a pattern of contracting with suspicious entities' and said they offered no clear technical or financial benefit to the Iraqi people. 'There are harmful agendas behind them,' al-Husseini told Shafaq News. 'They reflect US pressure and could negatively impact Iraq's economy and future generations.' Al-Husseini added that the committee would formally request copies of the contracts from the Cabinet to assess their content and potential impact. He also claimed that some of the companies involved have financial links to Israel, calling the agreements a concession at the expense of Iraqi sovereignty. On April 9, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani oversaw the signing of three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with American firms aimed at modernizing Iraq's energy sector and expanding economic cooperation. The first MoU was signed with GE Vernova to develop combined-cycle gas power plants with a capacity of up to 24,000 megawatts, the largest such initiative in Iraq's history. The second MoU, signed with UGT Renewables, covers a 3,000-megawatt solar project, a 500 megawatt-hour battery storage system, upgrades to power transmission lines, and a two-year maintenance and training package. The deal is backed by financing from the US Export-Import Bank, UK Export Finance, and JPMorgan Chase. A third agreement between the Iraqi and US Chambers of Commerce aims to deepen commercial ties, particularly between small and medium-sized enterprises. The deals coincided with a visit to Baghdad by a high-level US business delegation that included executives from major American companies.
