League One Alloa handed Premier Sports Cup second-round trip to Rangers
League One side Alloa have been handed a Premier Sports Cup second-round trip to Rangers following Sunday's draw. The Wasps – the lowest-ranked team remaining in the tournament – were surprise winners of their group and will face Russell Martin's Gers at Ibrox on the weekend of August 16/17. Holders Celtic will host newly-promoted Falkirk in one of four all-Premiership ties. The others see Kilmarnock host Dundee United, Livingston at home to Hibernian, and St Mirren play Hearts in Paisley. St Johnstone, relegated from the top flight last term, will host Motherwell while Aberdeen have been drawn away to Championship side Morton. There is guaranteed to be at least one second-tier side in the last eight after Championship pair Partick Thistle and Ayr United were pitted together. St Mirren and Ayr became the last two sides to secure their second-round places on Sunday when Killian Phillips' first-half double set the Paisley men on course for a 2-1 home victory over the Honest Men in Group D. While the Buddies topped the section, Scott Brown's side also progressed as one of the three best runners-up despite losing their perfect record in the competition against their William Hill Premiership hosts. Dunfermline had been waiting in the wings hoping to profit from any Saints slip-up or an unlikely nine-goal defeat for Ayr, but their hopes of progressing were dashed by events in Paisley. The Buddies went ahead after Phillips fired home Roland Idowu's cutback from 15 yards out in the 16th minute, and the recently-capped Republic of Ireland midfielder doubled his tally in the 38th minute when he turned home another Idowu delivery from just outside the six-yard box. Ayr pulled one back in the 64th minute when Kevin Holt headed home Dom Thomas' corner to ensure a nervy finale for the hosts. Dundee – eliminated after losing their opening two fixtures – were the only top-flight side to fail to make it through the group stage. Livi looking for reinforcements in transfer window following injury blow
David Martindale has revealed that Livingston will dip back into the transfer market as they look for further reinforcements. It comes after right-back Cammy Kerr was ruled out for longer than first expected and will miss the start of the season as a result. Martindale hinted that the 29-year-old, who joined from Queen's Park earlier this month, could be out until the new year. The Livi boss says he would ideally like another three new faces in to bolster his squad ahead of their Premiership return, but insists he would be content to work with the players already at his disposal if no new signings materialise. Speaking to STV Sport on Tuesday, he said: 'We have a couple of injuries in the full-back areas, so I feel we may have to dip back into the market for a full-back to give us cover. 'Unfortunately for Cammy Kerr, he's come in and we kind of felt he'd just need a wee tidy up, but it's going to be a bit longer than we anticipated, so Cammy is going to be one of those ones that will be like a new signing in January, if that makes sense? 'So, we have kind of lost a full-back and Cris (Montano) took a wee bit of a knock on Saturday so we are going to have to take another look at that. 'For me, ideally, we'd maybe like to bring another two, maybe three, in, but we need to balance the books for that to happen. 'Ideally, I'd like to bring another offensive player in, probably a nine, maybe an eight, and a full-back. So that's the ideal, but if the window closed tomorrow and I was left with this group, I would be fairly happy.' Livingston are preparing to take on Kilmarnock at Rugby Park in an all-Premiership clash in the League Cup group stage. Gloucester come from behind to beat Montpellier and set up Bath clash
GLOUCESTER booked an EPCR Challenge Cup quarter-final clash against West Country rivals Bath after beating Montpellier 24-17 in France. The Gallagher Premiership play-off contenders dug deep to recover from a 14-point deficit after just nine minutes. Tries from Anthony Bouthier and Hugo Reus, who converted both, gave Montpellier a flying start. But Gloucester weathered the storm and drew level following touchdowns by Wales international Freddie Thomas and his fellow forward Cameron Jordan. Santi Carreras kicked two conversions, only for Montpellier to regain the lead through a Reus penalty on the stroke of half-time. Gloucester had scrum-half Caolan Englefield yellow-carded early in the second period, yet they regained the lead while he was still off the pitch when Ruan Ackermann crossed for try number three and Carreras again converted. The visitors held on to their advantage and Carreras made sure of victory when he kicked a penalty in the last minute to set up an intriguing all-Premiership encounter. South African challengers the Bulls moved into the last eight, meanwhile, after a 32-22 win at Bayonne, with David Kriel and Marco van Staden among their try-scorers. Connacht overcame Cardiff 35-20 in Galway to set up a home quarter-final against Racing 92 next weekend. Tries from Matthew Devine, Sean Jansen, Finn Treacy, Shayne Bolton and Paul Boyle saw the Irish province through. Cardiff responded with tries from Rey Lee-Lo, Ben Thomas and Josh Adams as the Welsh visitors rallied in an entertaining affair. Connacht full-back Mack Hansen and Cardiff lock Josh McNally were both sent to the sin bin in the first half. With Ireland centre Bundee Aki impressive, Connacht built on their 14-8 interval lead and Cardiff's fate was sealed by a yellow card to centre Thomas and a final try from replacement flanker Boyle.

Hearts and Dundee will kick-off the Scottish Cup quarter-final weekend when the Dark Blues travel to Tynecastle on Friday, 7 all-Premiership tie will kick-off at 19:45 GMT, and be televised live on Premier Jambos fired six past Tony Docherty's side earlier this month in a league meeting.
