Wānaka Bakery's Mince And Cheese Pie Wins Again At National Awards
Kai Pai Bakery has once again proven its Mince and Cheese mastery, earning two medals at the 2025 New Zealand Bakels Supreme Pie Awards. The Wānaka-based bakery took home a Silver in the Commercial Mince and Cheese category and a Bronze in the Mince and Cheese category, proving their expertise in a pie that's long been considered a Kiwi classic. Kai Pai head baker Jason Danielson says the Mince and Cheese is Kai Pai's biggest-selling flavour. 'We make sure we keep at the top of our game with it.' This year's results reinforce Kai Pai's position as the most awarded bakery in the South Island. The bakery's Commercial Mince and Cheese Pie has been recognised at every NZ Supreme Pie Awards held since 2017, a testament to consistent quality and delicious taste. 'In the Mince and Cheese category, we are often competing against small-batch, even handmade pies, so we're delighted to show large-scale production can still deliver award-winning flavour and craftsmanship, Danielson says. 'We don't take shortcuts. Despite rising ingredient costs, we're still sticking to our guns and using top-quality ingredients, like using Colby cheese rather than going for cheaper options. 'A lot of the time commercial bakeries are focused on speed or profit margins, but it's important to us to maintain that level of quality and taste. It proves that we do really care about what we're doing.' Kai Pai's Mince and Cheese pie is not only a favourite with judges—it's also a Kiwi classic. 'Every month, we make enough Mince and Cheese pies to span the length of 42 rugby fields. So it's pretty popular.' Employing 45 staff, Kai Pai Bakery is a Kiwi-owned family business, with all of its pies and savouries produced in Wānaka. The bakery has scooped 29 Supreme Pie Awards since 2016, making it the most awarded commercial pie manufacturer in New Zealand. 'We've got a great team who all work very hard and care about what they do. These wins are a credit to them," Danielson adds.

As photos of the on-site bar menu emerged on social media earlier this week, one fan commented on X: "Imagine paying over £300 for Glastonbury tickets to be told it's a further £32 for an £8 bottle of wine. 🤪 don't give festivals your coin it's a proper scam." Bahama Breeze to shut down? Darden restaurant franchise looking to sell Caribbean-themed chain
Bahama Breeze might soon disappear from the American dining scene. Darden Restaurants, which owns the Caribbean-style chain, has announced that it is stepping back from the brand and exploring the option to sell it. The decision comes weeks after 15 restaurants were shut down across several U.S. states. Darden confirms exit after widespread closures Darden CEO Rick Cardenas said during the company's earnings call on Friday that Bahama Breeze is no longer a strategic focus. He confirmed that the company is seeking 'strategic alternatives' for the brand, which means selling it or possibly converting the restaurants. Your bestie deserves the best gift. 💖 — Bahama Breeze (@BahamaBreeze) December 5, 2024 'We have made the difficult decision that these remaining locations are not a strategic priority for us,' Cardenas said. 'We also believe this brand and these restaurants have the potential to benefit from a new owner.' The company closed 15 locations last month across Florida, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts, Nevada, and Michigan. Currently only 14 Bahama Breeze outlets are functional. Future uncertain for the Island-themed chain Bahama Breeze Bahama Breeze built its identity around a tropical atmosphere and Caribbean-style menu. Dishes like Jamaican jerk chicken pasta, yuca cheese sticks, and colourful cocktails have long drawn in regulars. But with fewer locations and no future investment from Darden, the brand's future looks uncertain. kid's Mac and Cheese... iykyk — Bahama Breeze (@BahamaBreeze) November 18, 2024 Darden CEO Rick Cardenas also noted that if no buyer steps forward, Darden might turn the remaining Bahama Breeze outlets into one of its other successful brands, possibly Olive Garden or LongHorn Steakhouse. This means the beloved "island escape" theme may soon vanish from the dining map. A larger trend in the American restaurant industry Bahama Breeze isn't the only restaurant chain facing trouble. Across the country, rising costs and shifting customer habits are forcing brands to downsize or shut down completely. According to reports, Hooters filed for bankruptcy earlier this year to restructure nearly $400 million in debt. The company has said it plans to continue under a franchise model, even after closing several outlets. As Darden focuses on its stronger brands, Bahama Breeze becomes the latest in a growing list of once-popular chains struggling to survive in a changing industry.

A ‘Seinfeld'-Approved Bagel Institution Out of NYC Lands in D.C.
New York bagels are coming to the nation's capital. And these aren't just New York- style bagels; rather, H&H Bagels — which opened its first location in Manhattan in 1972 — brings its 50-year-old recipe to Mount Vernon Triangle (601 K Street NW). H&H is now open for ordering as of today. It's celebrating its D.C. debut on Thursday, June 12 with mystery value gift cards valued between $5 and $100 for the first 200 customers. sH&H purists will be happy to hear the bagel and schmear menu will be identical to the original. To maintain its iconic texture, chew, and taste, H&H sends its dough made from kettle-boiled NYC water down to its newest location. 'Bagels are baked fresh on-site [and] now around the country, so that no matter where you are, you're getting the real NYC experience,' says director of marketing Jesse Stein. Since its Upper West Side debut decades ago, H&H has expanded across the city with stores in the Upper East Side, multiple airport outposts, and Penn Station. While H&H is sticking to its recipe roots, it's branching out in terms of certain flavors and combinations. Take a new spicy scallion cream cheese, which is infused with a blend of dried chili peppers, and then mixed with fresh scallions for a slow-building heat. Stein also teases some 'fun collaborations coming up toward the end of the summer' that will be available both in D.C. as well as locations nationwide. Classics, however, will always be a staple at H&H. The Bacon, Egg, and Cheese remains the most popular sandwich on the menu 'by a mile,' says Stein. Its everything bagel, by the way, is its best-seller by far. The D.C. debut marks the brand's third expansion out of its Big Apple home base, thanks to the nationwide franchise rollout announced in 2024. Boca Raton and Santa Monica are already open, and future shops are destined for Tampa, Jacksonville, and West Palm Beach, Florida; Knoxville, Tennessee; Chicago; and LA. But D.C. is special, says Stein: 'There was great interest in bringing H&H to the community, and we're excited to be in such a great location accessible to so many Washingtonians.' While New York City may be known for its bagels, D.C. certainly holds its own when it comes to baked rings of goodness. The nation's capital has no shortage of excellent local shops, including decades-old Bethesda Bagels, Shaw newcomer Pearl's Bagels, and Buffalo & Bergen — the growing D.C. enterprise from Long Island-born restaurateur Gina Chersevani that ships dough daily from Queens. But this growing bagel culture, says Stein, has only added fuel to H&H's fire. 'We know that the bagel scene has been having its moment in D.C., and we're very excited to join that community,' says Stein. 'It's great to be coming into a region where there's already passion around bagels.' Founded in 1972 by Helmer Toro and Hector Hernandez, the original H&H Bagel was as classic as it gets. The New York Times said it was the neighborhood's 'most celebrated destination for what is quite possibly the Upper West Side's most iconic food.' The cult-favorite amongst locals and tourists alike was popularized over the years by appearances in Sex & the City and Seinfeld . H&H famously played a starring role on Seinfeld . Returning to work after a 12-year strike, Kramer ends up sabotaging the bagel machine and goes back on strike during 'Festivus' — and reminding us all that the hourly minimum wage in NY was just $5.15 in the late 1990s. From a price perspective, its cream cheese bagel with mix-ins like scallion, veggie, strawberry, and more is now $5.75. —Tierney Plumb contributed to this report Sign up for our newsletter.

Air fryer Pret ham & cheese croissant copycat recipe so good it's 'dangerous'
Make your own homemade versions of Pret's Ham and Cheese Croissant which will be your 'absolute kryptonite' Pret has become the king of morning coffees and breakfasts on-the-go, but one food creator has shared a foolproof recipe for recreating one of its most popular pastries at home. TikToker Saskia revealed that one particular pastry from the coffee chain is her 'absolute kryptonite'. Pret's ham and cheese croissant is packed full of rich smoky bacon, cured ham, Emmental cheese, and a hearty tomato sauce. Instead of forking out for one of these every morning, Saskia has perfected her own homemade version which can be whipped up in no time at all. Saskia explained: 'The ham and cheese pret pastries are my absolute kryptonite. I cannot walk past a Pret without grabbing one, so I made sure to stock my freezer full of these copycats for easy postpartum brekkies. 'I scoured the ingredients on the website to make sure I was getting it right - they have a bacon lardon tomato sauce and then ham on top (silly me thought they just had a slab of bacon) and these are absolute heaven. Freeze them raw then chuck in the oven or air fryer for 12-15 mins (beware they get MOLTEN hot, so you'll have to let them calm down a bit before you can tuck in). In the video, Saskia said: 'I'm dangerously obsessed with the Pret Ham and Cheese pastry, and I have nailed this recipe for you guys. They're the first thing I decided to stock my postpartum freezer with because they're quick and easy as a breakfast or lunch option to eat one-handed.' Saskia uses smoky bacon in the tomato sauce, using Emmental cheese and gooey mozzarella 'just like they do in store'. She continued: 'These are perfect to cook from frozen.' What's even better is that you can whip these up in the air fryer in just 15 minutes. Pret fans shared their praise for her recipe. Pierce wrote: 'Omg amazing, thank you for this! I've nearly gone bankrupt buying them so much.' Charlotte agreed: 'Oh my god you're doing the lords work by posting this.' Lydia simply said, 'This is genius,' while Char commented, 'I built this fyp brick by brick. I think about these so often. I love them. And now I love you for doing this for me.' So if you're keen to recreate one of Pret's most popular pastries at home, this is what you'll need. Ham & Cheese Croissants Ingredients 200g smoked bacon lardons 1 large onion, finely diced 1 carrot, finely diced 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon herbes de provence 2 tablespoons tomato puree 2 x 400g tins of mutti finely chopped tomatoes 1 teaspoon sugar 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar 2 x sheets of ready to roll puff pastry 2 x packets of thick sliced ham 2 x packets of sliced cheese (Emmental/mozzarella or both) Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 egg, beaten Method Fry the bacon lardons until golden and crisp. Add the onion and carrot and sweat for five to ten minutes until soft. Add garlic and herbs and cook for a minute, before adding the tomato puree and cooking out for two minutes. Add the tinned tomatoes, sugar and vinegar and leave to bubble away for 15 to 20 minutes. Season to taste. Cut the puff pastry into six rectangles per sheet, and score an internal rectangle around the edge of each. Spread a few tablespoons of the tomato sauce, top with a slice of ham and cheese, then tuck two opposite corners together to enclose the centre of the filling. Egg wash and season generously with fresh black pepper. Either freeze on a flat tray and cook from frozen (15 minutes in an air fryer at 180*C or 12 minutes if cooking fresh).
