Yemeni Customs to enforce permanent ban on American-origin products starting August 19

Sana'a – Saba: The Yemeni Customs Authority announced that, in accordance with the minutes of the Central Committee for Boycotting American and Israeli Products meeting held on July 15, 2025, the Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Investment has directed that American products currently present at customs ports be allowed entry until August 18, 2025, as a temporary and exceptional measure. In a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (SABA), the Authority clarified that this step is in preparation for implementing Prime Minister's Decision No. (10) of 1446 AH, which mandates a complete and permanent ban on the entry of American and Israeli goods, commodities, and products after this date. Any such items will be handled according to re-export procedures, with no exceptions for entry. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi shared that New Zealand's Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Trade, and Investment, Todd McClay, affirmed this commitment during their bilateral meeting. 'The New Zealand government aims to be a strategic partner to Malaysia, not only in halal certification but also by leveraging Malaysia as a gateway to the ASEAN market, which has a population exceeding 600 million,' Ahmad Zahid told reporters. The discussions followed Ahmad Zahid's visit to New Zealand's National Crisis Management Centre (Beehive Bunker), a key facility for disaster and emergency response. McClay also expressed openness to importing Malaysian agricultural products, including tropical fruits like pineapples. Malaysian firms were further encouraged to explore investment opportunities in New Zealand's construction sector. Ahmad Zahid highlighted that the meeting resulted in a strategic agreement to expand bilateral trade, with New Zealand actively participating in regional platforms such as the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)-China Summit and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). He expressed optimism that Malaysia-New Zealand relations would serve as a model for Indo-Pacific cooperation, benefiting both nations. Separately, during a gathering with the Malaysian diaspora in Wellington, Ahmad Zahid announced a NZ$100,000 (RM251,000) allocation to Rumah Malaysia to support National Day celebrations. The funding aims to ease event preparations while acknowledging the patriotism of Malaysians abroad. - Bernama

Libya signs infrastructure deals with Egyptian firms to boost reconstruction - Markets & Companies

Libya's Fund for Development and Reconstruction signed two major contracts on Saturday with Egyptian companies for critical development projects across several Libyan cities, part of a comprehensive plan to rebuild the country and enhance its infrastructure. The first set of contracts was signed with Dr. Assem El-Gazzar, chairman of Neom for Real Estate Development, Trade, and Investment. These projects will focus on reconstruction in cities like Derna and Al-Bayda, which were devastated by Cyclone Daniel in September 2023. These include developing Wadi Al-Naqa in Derna, which features 800 meters of retaining walls to enhance public safety and prevent landslides. The deals also cover the expansion and modernisation of the 62.5 km road linking the 10th Ring Bridge to Aqabat Al-Bakur, a key route connecting the mountains to the coast. Projects for Al-Bayda include upgrades to the 22 km western entrance road and the completion of surface roads around the city's two main bridges. Infrastructure works in Derna will also see a new wastewater network and a power treatment plant to boost basic services. Neom will also construct eight water culverts along Derna's Corniche Road to prevent flooding and improve rainwater drainage. Additionally, it will design and implement a new sewage network and treatment plant in Al-Bayda, with a capacity of 25,000 cubic meters to meet future demand. In a second round of agreements, Eng. Belqasim Haftar signed additional contracts with Eng. Khaled Madi, chairman of Wadi El Nile for General Contracting. These aim to strengthen further road networks, bridges, and electricity infrastructure in key regions. These projects include completing Phase 2 of the Al-Bakur Bridge and Road, implementing electrical works along the Tobruk–Emsaad Road, and surface works for the Al-Sement Bridge and Al-Tayyara Roundabout in Benghazi. Sarawak urged to explore new markets beyond traditional partners

KUCHING: Sarawak must expand its trade reach into new markets such as Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America to reduce dependency on traditional partners, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. Speaking at the launch of Sarawak Export Day 2025, he emphasised the need for stronger collaborations with industrial players, trade agencies, and global distributors. 'These partnerships will help Sarawak brands gain retail access, improve visibility, and establish a stronger global presence,' he said. Awang Tengah, who is also the state's Minister of International Trade, Industry, and Investment, highlighted the role of technology in boosting competitiveness. He urged businesses to adopt digital platforms, AI-driven insights, and blockchain to enhance transparency and attract global buyers. 'Global buyers now prioritise sustainability alongside price and quality. Exporters must meet international standards that incorporate eco-friendly practices,' he added. The ministry is assisting exporters in adapting to regulatory changes, joining trade missions, and gaining international exposure. Sarawak's trade offices in Singapore and Brunei, along with a planned office in Pontianak, Indonesia, will serve as key gateways for regional and global market expansion.
