New nuclear manufacturing hub in Deeside to create 200 jobs

Boccard, an international engineering, manufacturing, construction and maintenance company headquartered in Lyon, France, opened the new facility on Deeside Industrial Estate on Wednesday (July 16). The strategic hub is seen as a vital move in developing a supply chain capable of meeting the government's nuclear build programme, following its commitment to invest £17bn in the sector. It is one of the UK's largest supply chain hubs for the nuclear industry, providing infrastructure components for UK nuclear power stations including Hinkley Point C in Somerset and Sizewell C in Suffolk. The facility will manufacture components including pipework, supports, tanks and modular systems. With experience from its participation in 44 of the 56 producing reactors in France, Boccard's new development further enhances the UK's reputation as a strategic location for the advancement of nuclear technologies. It will also provide the UK and Europe with the means to strengthen energy resilience and secure supply. As the transition from fossil fuels to greener sources accelerates, the operation will support the need for access to adequate, reliable, and affordable clean energy. Bruno Boccard, chairman of Boccard, said: "Our new facility in North Wales is a milestone in our century-long history and part of our broader European expansion. "Our ambition is to be a driving force in the UK's nuclear renaissance, while supporting the country's decarbonisation and energy sovereignty goals." He added: "The UK government's historic support marks a turning point for the nuclear sector, shifting focus to building a world-class supply chain and attracting top talent. "As a leading manufacturer, we look forward to sharing best practices and collaborating to create a nuclear hub in North Wales and across the UK." On the production line at the new Boccard nuclear components manufacturing facility at Deeside (Image: Boccard) Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, said: 'The opening of Boccard's new nuclear components manufacturing facility in Deeside clearly signals that Wales is strategically placed to play a central role in the future nuclear supply chain. 'With a rapidly growing skilled workforce and the presence of major suppliers like Boccard, North Wales is primed to attract further investment into this expanding sector and unlock significant growth for the Welsh economy. 'Since the start of this Senedd term, we have directly invested £600 million in Welsh businesses, creating and safeguarding 40,000 jobs. The hundreds of jobs created by the opening of Boccard's new manufacturing facility, which is backed by more than £1 million in Welsh Government funding, forms part of this success story." MORE NEWS: She added: 'Wales is becoming an important location for inward investment. Last year saw 65 projects - a 23% increase on the previous financial year. This was the second highest increase of any nation or region of the UK.' Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: 'The people of North Wales are set to feel the benefits of our plans to kickstart a golden age of new nuclear. This new manufacturing facility demonstrates the benefits that nuclear power can bring to every corner of the country – building up British supply chains and creating jobs and economic growth. 'The biggest nuclear building programme in a generation will also help protect family finances, take back control of our energy, and tackle the climate crisis.'

Rs25bn allocated to provide relief through solarisation: minister

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Development, Energy, and Planning, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, stated that an amount of Rs 25 billion has been allocated in the provincial budget to provide relief to the public through solarisation. He expressed his gratitude to Chairman Bilawal Bhutto and Chief Minister Sindh for this initiative. Speaking to journalists at the media corner of the Sindh Assembly, Nasir Shah said that it is Chairman Bilawal Bhutto's vision to provide affordable and free electricity to the people of Sindh. He emphasised that the government is actively working on providing solar panels and implementing solarisation projects, especially for the underprivileged and impoverished communities across the province. The Sindh Energy department is pursuing this effort with full commitment and as a top priority. The minister for Energy and Planning further added that the block budget allocated in the financial plan will be used to implement various public welfare initiatives. Nasir Shah also stated that the ruling party has enough majority in the Assembly and does not need support or votes from others to pass the budget. Commenting on the budget session, he criticised the opposition for disrupting Chief Minister Sindh's speech by approaching the CM's desk, which he described as inappropriate. Despite prior discussions and agreed speaking times with opposition members, such behavior was unjustified. He emphasized that leadership should not be targeted, and the opposition had earlier agreed on this principle. He further stated that elected members of the Assembly are the voice of the people, and through block allocations, schemes based on their suggestions will be included in the budget. Nasir Shah termed the opposition's protest in the assembly as unconventional. He also accused the opposition leader of misrepresenting facts, stating that Ali Khurshidi came to Faryal Talpur, who pointed out that their approach was improper. Nasir Shah reiterated that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) serves all communities across Sindh without any discrimination based on race or ethnicity. He added that the people have recognized the PPP's service through their continued support. Special attention is being given to the development of Karachi. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

£10m to support community-led energy projects across Wales

NEW funding is now available to support organisations across Wales to develop Smart Local Energy Systems (SLES), helping ensure the benefits of energy generation are retained and felt in local communities. The £10m Ynni Cymru capital grants scheme forms a key part of Wales' ambitious goal to generate 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035. It provides financial support to community energy organisations, social enterprises, public sector bodies, and SMEs developing innovative local energy projects. The grant scheme builds on the work of Ynni Cymru, established by the Welsh Government in 2023, to promote community ownership of renewable energy and drive Wales' transition to a low-carbon economy. Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, said: 'This £10 million investment shows our continued commitment to putting communities at the heart of Wales' clean energy transition. 'Smart Local Energy Systems are not just about decarbonising our energy supply – they are about lower energy costs, local job creation, and more resilient energy infrastructure for local communities. 'I am really pleased to open applications for the next funding round and want to encourage organisations across Wales to bring forward their innovative proposals.' The scheme's impact can be seen at Holywell Town Football Club in Flintshire where, thanks to funding during the last round, the club has transformed its energy infrastructure. The grant allowed the club to add roof-mounted solar PV panels, battery storage, air source heat pumps, EV charging points, smart LED floodlights, and an intelligent energy management system. This integrated approach means it expects an 80% reduction in annual energy costs – savings that are being reinvested into grassroots sport and community initiatives. Director of Holywell Town Football Club 1947 Ltd, Tracey Jones, said: 'We have built a strong foundation and legacy that is supporting local people within the local and wider area of Holywell and are grateful for the fund's support towards our long-term sustainability. 'While this phase concludes, the club's journey continues. We look forward to building on this momentum, expanding our reach, and ensuring the club remains a lasting asset for the community. 'Our expected reduction in annual energy costs also allows us to further support grassroots sport and initiatives. We currently have 155 boys from ages 6-17 playing within the club, have a new Females team with us for the new season ahead, and have a strong relationship with Achieve More Training delivering engagement programs and qualifications at the ground of our football club – reaching out to deliver alternate provision through 'Goodwood' which is based within our football club.' The Energy Secretary added: 'The success we have already seen from previous recipients is helping gain invaluable insights into the scale of benefits that can be secured for communities, which will help Ynni Cymru refine and expand systems to maximise their impact across Wales.'
