Trump slams ‘dead economies' India, Russia, hits out at Medvedev on ‘war' with US threat

Day after imposing 25% tarrif on Indian exports to the US, President Donald Trump refered to India and Russia as 'dead economies' and said on Thursday, 'I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care." Trump's latest remarks came after he announced that the US would impose 25% tarrif on Indian exports, plus a penalty, starting August 1. On July 30, he had criticised India's relationship with Russia, saying India has always bought a vast majority of their military equipment and energy from Russia, which was 'not good.' In response to this, the Indian government said it was studying the implications of Trump's announcements and remained dedicated to securing a fair trade deal. On July 31, Trump said in a new post on TRUTH social, 'We have done very little business with India, their Tariffs are too high, among the highest in the World,' 'Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let's keep it that way, and tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he's still President, to watch his words. He's entering very dangerous territory!,' Trump warned. Earlier on Monday, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that Trump was playing "the ultimatum game" with Russia, and that such an approach could lead to a war involving the United States. Medvedev wrote on X, 'Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with (Trump's) own country.' Medvedev had called a framework trade agreement struck between the European Union and the United States "anti-Russian" – likening it to a de facto ban on buying Russian oil and gas.

Italy slams Russian blacklist as Kremlin ‘propaganda'

ROME – Italy summoned the Russian ambassador on Wednesday after President Sergio Mattarella, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and Defence Minister Guido Crosetto were listed by Moscow as alleged 'Russophobes'. Published by Russia's foreign ministry, the list accuses several European leaders of fueling anti-Russian sentiment over the war in Ukraine, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni slammed the move as 'yet another propaganda operation' meant to deflect from Moscow's actions. In a statement, she said the accusations are 'well-known and condemned by the international community from the very beginning.' President Mattarella was cited over past remarks comparing the invasion of Ukraine to Nazi aggression and condemning the 'inhuman tragedy' faced by Ukrainians. (de)

Italy summons Russian envoy after President put on ‘Russophobe' list

The Italian Government said on Wednesday (July 30, 2025) that it would summon the Russian ambassador to protest against President Sergio Mattarella being included in a list compiled by Moscow of Western leaders accused of anti-Russian sentiment. 'Publishing a list of so-called 'Russophobes' who supposedly incite hatred against Russia is yet another propaganda operation,' said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a statement. On July 24, the Russian Foreign Ministry published a list of what it called 'hate speech' against Russia by members of Western elites, in which it included a statement from Mr. Mattarella at Aix-Marseille University last February. In his speech, the Italian President drew a parallel between Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the expansionist wars of Nazi Germany. The Russian Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. Italy has traditionally had close political and economic ties with Russia. However, after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, the relationship deteriorated, and Rome has firmly stood by Kyiv. According to Ms. Meloni, Moscow broke international law by invading Ukraine and Western countries have condemned Russia. Mr. Mattarella is the only Italian on the list, which also includes German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, the Secretary-General of NATO Mark Rutte, and the President of France Emmanuel Macron.
