The man-eat-dog world of JG Ballard
'Later, as he sat on his balcony eating the dog, Dr Robert Laing reflected on the unusual events that had taken place within this huge apartment building during the previous three months.' For my money this is a strong contender for the best opening line of any 20th-century novel. Take that, bright cold days in April and Gregor Samsa's uneasy dreams! It tells us, without any doubt, that we've moved into Ballard country, where things will be a) weird, b) disquieting and c) bloodless, with all emotion strained out by the author before any readers are allowed in. Ballard's early books were all about ecological catastrophes so unlikely they entered the realm of high fantasy. Crocodiles swimming a flooded London! A world where everything turns
