Multiple people displaced after apartment building fire on Chicago's South Side
A two-alarm fire broke out at an apartment building in Washington Park on Chicago's South Side, leaving multiple people displaced. Chicago firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire on the third floor of the apartment building on 56th Street and Calumet Avenue, just after 10 p.m. Video from the scene showed heavy smoke and flames billowing from the third floor of the building. A woman who lives in the building told CBS News Chicago she managed to escape, thanks to a neighbor's warning. She claims fireworks may have been involved. "My neighbor across the hall and her son banged on the door and said our building was on fire, but before that, the people above me at 5645 on the second floor were popping firecrackers or sparklers or something," she said. Fire officials have not confirmed the cause of the fire. Several people were displaced, and the Red Cross is assisting residents.

Structure fire forces evacuations at St. Joseph apartment complex
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — Tenants are navigating the aftermath after being displaced by a structure fire at the Meadows Apartments, located off South Leonard Road and Pickett. A large presence of first responders was seen at the complex early Tuesday morning, quickly working to combat the intense fire before it spread further. According to the St. Joseph Fire Department, eight apartments were affected and more than 20 residents were safely evacuated; however, no injuries were reported. Meadows Apartments tenant Martel Stewart said he was grateful to be awoken by St. Joseph Police officers before safely evacuating with his fiancée and children. When we came out, this whole parking lot was just full of people and smoke," Stewart said. "And there were about four or five fire trucks and 15 cop cars that did a really good job in assisting. I was just praying as it was spreading across other units that it wouldn't touch ours. It's just unfortunate that everyone had to go through all this." Stewart, who has lived at the complex for nearly four years, described it as a quiet, well-maintained place. The fire came as a complete surprise to him and his family. One family badly impacted by the fire had reportedly just moved into the complex two days earlier and lost the majority of their belongings. "She's a hero in herself because she was banging on all the neighbors' doors, telling them to get out," Stewart said. "Anytime something like this happens, it's just tragic. Everything's so expensive and hard as it is, especially when somebody just moves in and you're trying to make somewhere your home then suddenly, you wake up to a disaster." Caseworkers from the St. Joseph Red Cross, along with community partners, are working to support tenants and identify the next steps in their recovery. "They said it's going to be maybe three or four be longer," Stewart said. "So right now, I'm just grabbing all our belongings that we need: toiletries, clothes, work stuff and making sure we can get through the week." JoAnn Woody, executive director of the American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City and Northwest Missouri, said in a statement to News-Press NOW: "The Red Cross has established a temporary shelter for nearly 20 residents who needed a safe place to stay while they work with our Red Cross caseworkers and amazing partners in the St. Joseph community to identify the next steps. Having volunteers and partners who are committed to working together to meet the humanitarian needs of those affected by disaster is a gift, for the community and for the organizations that serve. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the St. Joseph Fire Department. News-Press NOW will provide updates as more details become available.

Family demands justice after fire killed 4, including pregnant mom and young son, on Chicago's West Side
A West Side Chicago community demanded justice Sunday after three family members were killed in a devastating apartment building fire. The fire broke out just before 2 a.m. Thursday in at 5222 W. North Ave., at the intersection with Latrobe Avenue. The blaze was eventually upgraded to a 3-11 alarm, calling approximately 140 firefighters to the scene. A total of four people died — including Brad Cummings, 76, the editor of the Austin neighborhood-based The Voice newspaper. Also killed were Destiny, Regina, and Jayceon Henry — ages 28, 32, and 5, respectively. Jayceon was Regina Henry's son, while Destiny was Regina's sister. A family member said Regina Henry was three months pregnant at the time of her death. The Henry family now claims the fire was started intentionally. The fire has been considered suspicious by authorities from the beginning, and an arson investigation has been launched. "My family has been in this community for years," said a relative, the Rev. George Smith. "My aunt and my cousins did not deserve this. We trust God in this, but we are frustrated. We want justice to come to our family." The family is offering a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest in the suspected arson.

One person died and nine were injured in a massive New York City apartment fire overnight Friday, authorities said in the Bronx. Byrd Place in the borough's Mount Eden section, according to police. Fatal fire tears through Bronx apartment overnight Everyone in the building was prompted to evacuate as the fire burned inside an apartment on the first floor, the New York City Fire Department said. The fire was reported at around 9:30 p.m. Friday and FDNY firefighters remained on the scene until early Saturday morning. It took about two hours to get it under control, officials said. Panicked tenants said they escaped massive flames and heavy smoke throughout the building. "There was smoke everywhere and, as I was going downstairs it got progressively worse, each floor I got down to. And by the second floor, I couldn't see anything," one woman said. "When I tried to open my eyes, my eyes were burning, and I tried to scream because I was so scared. I tried to scream for my sister, my grandmother, and all I felt was my throat was burning. I felt my throat burning and I couldn't breathe." 85-year-old man pronounced dead Neighbors said the older man who died was a veteran. "He's very sweet. He doesn't bother nobody. He does his own thing, he watches out for the neighborhood," Christina Woo, the man's neighbor, said. "He wasn't breathing and they were trying to resuscitate him." At least one person remained hospitalized in critical condition. Two people, ages 45 and 70, were in stable condition at the hospital, officials said. The American Red Cross was on the scene, but it was not immediately clear how many people were displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
