Fire breaks out behind Adelanto liquor store as police search for armed man

A brush fire ignited behind an Adelanto liquor store Sunday night as deputies were searching for a man who had entered the business with a gun minutes earlier, although a concrete link between the incidents was yet to be established, authorities said. Both the weapon brandishing and the fire were reported about 8:15 p.m. at Pearmain Street and Cactus Road, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department and San Bernardino County Fire Department logs. "Preliminarily, there was a report of a man with a gun that entered a liquor store," agency spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez said. "As the deputy was en route, it was reported there was a fire at the rear of the location." The armed suspect was not found during a search of the area. "It is not clear if the two incidents are connected," Rodriguez added. The blaze was extinguished within about half an hour. No further details were available as the investigation continued Sunday night. Winnipeg police say 10-hour standoff with armed man under bridge ends with arrest

WINNIPEG — Police in Winnipeg say they safely resolved a 10-hour standoff with an armed man hunkered underneath a city bridge and that they managed to pass water to him while they negotiated to de-escalate the situation. The city's police service says officers responded early Saturday to a report of shots fired at a home where they say a man had returned after an earlier dispute with the occupants. No one was injured and police allege that after shooting at the house, the man ran off and went under the Disraeli Bridge and refused to put down his gun. Officers immediately blocked off vehicle and pedestrian traffic as well as boats on the Red River and police say the hot weather added to the stress of the 10-hour standoff. Shortly before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, police say they were able to safely arrest the man. They allege the 36-year-old was unlawfully at large and violating his parole and he faces numerous firearms and other charges. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 15, 2025. Man, 36, charged after nearly 10-hour police standoff at Disraeli Bridge

A man who police say was at large violating a parole order is facing a number of charges after a standoff with officers at the Disraeli Bridge that lasted nearly 10 hours on Saturday. Winnipeg police were called to Grove Street off Euclid Avenue after reports of gunshots around 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Const. Dani McKinnon told reporters at a news conference on Sunday that police later learned a man had a prior dispute with residents at a home. He returned armed and fired shots at the house, police said in a Sunday news release with more details about the incident. While there was property damage, no one was injured, McKinnon said. The armed man then ran to the Disraeli Bridge near Sutherland Avenue where he hunkered down underneath, police say. Officers tried to get the man to rescind the firearm, but he initially refused. Police secured the area, blocking access to vehicles, pedestrians and boats for hours, while a team of crisis negotiators talked to the man. "He was in distress," McKinnon said. "For somebody to be armed and not able to come to a resolution sooner than later there's obviously some difficulties occurring." The police standoff almost hit the 10-hour mark under hot and sunny conditions. McKinnon said a person was taken into custody at around 3:22 p.m. "It was a long, tense scenario for the entire community, for the police, for the person involved, the families of all the residents in the area," McKinnon said. A 36-year-old man who was at large and violating parole has been charged with several counts including possession of a weapon and discharge of a firearm in a reckless manner.
