Superman Saving a Squirrel Was Cut Out of the Movie, but James Gunn Put It Back In

There are plenty of weird and unexpected moments in James Gunn's Superman, but one of the most unexpected has to be when he saves a squirrel in the middle of a giant battle. Not a human, not a group of animals, but a single, solitary squirrel. It speaks to the character's kindness and respect for all life in a fun, quirky way, but apparently not everyone liked it. 'It was probably the second- or third-most hotly debated moment in the movie,' Gunn said in a wide-ranging interview with Rolling Stone. 'Because we showed it to test audiences, and some people did not like the squirrel. They're like, 'Why the fuck is he saving a squirrel? Why is he taking time out, saving a squirrel?' There was a cut where I cut it out and I'm like, 'I really miss the squirrel. He's gotta save the squirrel.'' And so, Gunn put it back in. Especially because, if he lost it, the flow of the editing of the battle got messed up. 'In addition, there were also some geographic problems with where he ended up if I didn't have him fly over with the squirrel,' Gunn said. 'So I put the squirrel back in despite the protestations of some of my people on my crew.' Is Superman saving a squirrel extraneous? Possibly. Does it make sense? Absolutely. We know he loves animals from his attitude and interactions with Krypto. Plus, in a populated city like Metropolis, there aren't going to be many wild animals running around. But one that would certainly be there is a squirrel. And, don't forget, Gunn is the filmmaker who made a three-film Marvel series that centered around the origins of a talking raccoon. So, of course, Superman was going to have a soft spot for furry creatures. Head over to Rolling Stone to read much more from Gunn, especially regarding its music. Superman is now in theaters. Russian forces take control of three Ukrainian villages across multiple regions, defence ministry says

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russian troops have taken control of three villages in three different parts of the frontline running through Ukraine, the Defence Ministry said on Thursday. Official Ukrainian reports of activity along the 1,000-km (600-mile) front disputed part of the Russian account, particularly concerning a key village in the southeast. Reuters could not independently verify battlefield reports from either side. The Russian Defence Ministry report named the three captured settlements as Kamianske in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, Dehtiarne in northeastern Kharkiv region, and Popiv Yar in Donetsk region, the main theatre of Russian operations. Russian forces are engaged in a slow advance westward, mainly through Donetsk region, and Moscow announces the capture of new villages almost every day. Ukrainian military spokesperson Vladyslav Voloshyn told the media outlet that holding Kamianske, southeast of the region's main town of Zaporizhzhia, was important to keep that city safe from attack. But Kamianske had been all but flattened by long periods of fighting, he said. Ukrainian forces had moved out of it and successfully attacked Russian troops whenever small groups periodically ventured into it. "The Russians cannot go into the village and hold it," Voloshyn was quoted as saying. "There is not a single dwelling left intact, not a single wall left standing, nothing to hold, nothing to enable you to take cover." There was no acknowledgement from Ukraine that Popiv Yar had changed hands - the village lies northeast of Pokrovsk, for months a focal point of Russian attacks in Donetsk region. For at least a week, it has remained in the "grey zone" of uncertain control as reported by DeepState, a Ukrainian military blog based on open source accounts of the fighting. There was no news from Ukrainian officials of the situation at Dehtiarne. On Wednesday, Russia's military announced the capture of the village of Novohatske, southwest of Pokrovsk. Another Ukrainian military spokesperson, Viktor Trehubov, told public broadcaster Suspilne on Thursday that the village was in Russian hands. Moscow controls a little less than 20% of Ukrainian territory and says it has incorporated four regions - Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson into Russia, a move that Kyiv and most Western countries reject as illegal. In 2014, Russia seized and annexed Ukraine's Crimea peninsula, also a claim widely disputed internationally. Solve the daily Crossword

Myanmar military claims recapture of strategic town from rebel force

Myanmar's military government has claimed to have removed rebel fighters and recaptured a town after a yearlong battle near the country's main army training academy, marking a rare turnaround for the regime in the northeast region of the country. The country's ruling military announced on Thursday that it made the advance in Shan State's town of Nawnghkio, which had been under the control of the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA). The rebel group, part of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, had seized the strategically important town, which sits on a key highway linking central Myanmar to China, in July 2024. In a statement published in the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar, the military government said it had retaken Nawnghkio after '566 armed engagements within 11 operational months'. A rare one-page spread in the newspaper showed soldiers holding rifles aloft in celebration. It detailed the battle, admitting initial attacks led to officers and enlisted men 'sacrificing their lives'. But 'by combining strategic ground and air military tactics', the military captured 'the whole Nawnghkio area' by Wednesday, it said. Nawnghkio is located about 40km (25 miles) from Pyin Oo Lwin, the town that hosts the country's main military officer training academy, and some 80km (50 miles) from Myanmar's second-most populous city, Mandalay. In a statement, the TNLA did not acknowledge the military government's claim of victory, saying only that 'it has been difficult to continue administrative work in the town due to the heavy offensive'. The TNLA added that it had 'moved civil administration services to safe locations'. While the combined rebel offensive against government forces has inflicted sweeping losses since it was launched in October 2023, analysts say the military government's control over large population centres is secure as it wields an air force capable of staving off large-scale rebel advances. Northeastern Lashio city was also captured by the rebels but was handed back to the ruling military in April after a deal brokered by China. Since a 2021 military coup toppled the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and ignited a civil war in Myanmar, a myriad of pro-democracy armed groups and ethnic rebel armies have joined forces to fight against military rule. The groups in the Three Brotherhood Alliance, which also include the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and the Arakan Army, have been fighting for decades for greater autonomy from Myanmar's central government. The alliance is also loosely allied with the People's Defence Force, a pro-democracy resistance group that has emerged to fight the military regime.

IOF admit one soldier dead in Khan Younis

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) have acknowledged the death of a new soldier in the ongoing battles in Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip, Israeli media confirmed on Wednesday. A reserve sergeant major was killed in clashes with the Palestinian Resistance in southern Gaza, Israeli website Ynet confirmed. Abraham Azoulay was shot dead during an ambush in Khan Younis after Hamas fighters emerged from underground and attempted to capture him. The IOF's admission came after the al-Qassam Brigades announced that its fighters carried out a raid at dawn against a gathering of Israeli occupation soldiers and military vehicles in the Abasan al-Kabira area, east of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. In a statement, the Brigades said that its fighters targeted a Merkava tank and an armored personnel carrier with Yassin-105 anti-armor shells. Two Israeli military excavators were also hit during the same operation using similar munitions. The group added that during the operation, its fighters attempted to capture an Israeli soldier. However, due to battlefield conditions, they were unable to do so and instead neutralized the soldier and seized his weapon. Following the confrontation, al-Qassam fighters observed an Israeli helicopter landing at the site of the operation to carry out an evacuation, underscoring the intensity of the battle in the targeted area. The al-Qassam Brigades also noted that five days earlier, they had targeted a Merkava tank in the same region with a powerful improvised explosive device (IED), highlighting the sustained resistance activity in eastern Khan Younis as Israeli occupation forces continue their ground operations in Gaza.
