'Married... With Children' stars expose behind-the-scenes drama of beloved sitcom
"Married… With Children" wasn't all laughs behind the scenes. Stars Christina Applegate and Katey Sagal candidly shared how brutally honest the cast members were on the set of the iconic '90s show. "We were a sarcastic, cynical bunch," Sagal admitted on her "Pie" podcast, with husband Kurt Sutter. "You weren't safe, really. You turned your back, somebody's going to talk s--- on you." Applegate, their guest on the podcast, chimed in and recalled the moment she realized people were trash-talking her while she was steps away in her dressing room. "I could hear being talked s--- about in my dressing room on the monitor," she said. "I'd come up from rehearsal and I can hear everybody on set, literally talking s--- about me." "I was like, 'Wow, I was just there 20 seconds ago,'" she shared of her reaction. Sagal played Applegate's onscreen mother on the show, which ran from 1987 until 1997. Applegate previously revealed that the pressures she faced on "Married … with Children" led to her developing an eating disorder. In March, the "Dead to Me" actress opened up about being a child star and how it deeply impacted her health being in the spotlight. "Playing that character kind of did things to me in my psyche that were no bueno – like anorexia," she explained on her "MeSsy" podcast while speaking to guest Sagal at the time. "Yeah, a pretty bad eating disorder started when I was doing that show that lasted for a really long time," she said. Applegate said that she never told anyone about the disorder and was "very, very private about it." "I would hide in bathrooms to eat, because I had so much shame around eating that I would hide on the airplanes, like when we went to London," she said. "I remember hiding in there to eat like one shrimp, 'cause I was so afraid if anyone saw me eat that they'd think I was going to try to get fat or something. I don't know. I was in such a dark space." Sagal agreed that Applegate was "very much scrutinized" on the show because she was the "sex symbol." Being a sex symbol at 17 would "f--- with" anyone's head, Sagal said, adding that "it was a very misogynistic show." "Chrissy was very much scrutinized and tried to keep in a box," Sagal continued. "… So they put her in tighter skirts and shorter skirts, so, there was a lot of that." Applegate admitted that the provocative wardrobe choices were actually her idea. Her character, Kelly Bundy, was originally written as a "tough" "biker girl," but she said she was inspired by a girl interviewed for the 1981 documentary, "The Decline of Western Civilization: Part II: The Metal Years." "And she had this big f---ing hair, and a white Lycra dress, and I went to the wardrobe department and I said, 'We're changing this, We gotta represent the zeitgeist of this rock, slutty video vixen thing that's going on in the world right now where the men and the women all look the same. You know? They have the same hairdos.' So, that's where she came from." Set in Chicago, the series revolved around the Bundy family. Sagal and Applegate starred alongside Ed O'Neill, David Faustino and more.

I was in the audience for You Bet! - Stephen Mulhern showed his true colours when the cameras stopped rolling and one key part of the show is totally fake
Another brand-new series of You Bet! is set to air on ITV with host Stephen Mulhern at the helm. And now, someone who managed to secure a spot in the audience has revealed what the TV presenter, 48, is really like and what goes on behind the scenes. They told the Daily Express: 'Stephen was lovely. He made sure to go and greet every single audience member and allowed time for selfies and a quick chat. 'It seemed like he really cared about his fans and, despite a busy filming schedule, he still made time for everyone who showed up.' The fan went on to explain that there was one thing, however, that did surprise them. They admitted: 'As someone who is never on a TV set, I quickly learnt that there are some parts added in for dramatic effect. For example, the presenters were filmed giving several different reactions, as were the audience.' And now, someone who managed to secure a spot in the audience has revealed what the TV presenter, 48, is really like and what goes on behind the scenes (Stephen pictured last year) The audience member added that they were asked to boo, clap, and cheer even while nothing was actually happening on the show, and it seemed like it was recorded so that editors could 'cut it and pop it in wherever they pleased'. They also noted that Stephen and guests cheering while nothing was happening left the audience 'a bit perplexed' but then they realised it was a little bit 'fake'. However, despite several elements of the show reportedly being 'faked', the audience member admitted that they still had a great time and can't wait to see 'how things are changed' once the episode airs on TV. MailOnline has contacted ITV and Stephen's representative for comment. The gameshow sees ordinary people with extraordinary skills take on major challenges in front of an audience in different areas around the country. The new series will consist of six full-length episodes, and an additional Christmas special will be filmed in Cambridgeshire. Speaking about the upcoming series, host Stephen said: 'I'm absolutely thrilled that You Bet! is back - and this time we're hitting the road! 'Each week, I'll be joined by a top celeb panel, as our challengers take on some brilliantly bonkers and amazing challenges. 'With the title of You Bet Champion on the line, it's going to be unbelievable from the start.' It comes after ITV suspended the filming of new game show You Bet! last month after a car fire caused havoc on set, MailOnline revealed. Host Stephen was shooting a special Emmerdale segment of the returning hit series in Yorkshire when two fire engines were called out after a vehicle burst into flames. The blaze subsequently spread to prop vans used by the show's crews, destroying thousands of pounds worth of equipment, forcing bosses to abandon filming. An eyewitness said: 'It was carnage. 'The blaze just started from a random vehicle, which then resulted in vans used by the crew also go up in flames.' 'There was obvious panic, and it's a miracle nobody was harmed. 'The fire started within close proximity of the soap and thankfully didn't spread inside where filming takes place.' Stephen paid a visit to the Emmerdale set, which is filmed on the grounds of Harewood House, near Leeds, to shoot a challenge which will appear on the upcoming new series of You Bet! Commenting on the fire, a spokesperson for You Bet! said: 'Following an incident that was unrelated to filming, production for You Bet! was suspended as a precaution. 'The situation was promptly assessed by the fire services and no one was injured or affected. 'The health and safety of all individuals involved in the making of the programme remains our highest priority.' A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire Service added, 'We were called at 15.57 on Friday to reports of a small vehicle on fire on Harewood Avenue. 'We sent two crews, Moortown and Wetherby. 'On arrival, this was found to be two vehicles on fire, which crews extinguished. No reports of any injuries. 'The cause has been recorded as accidental.' You Bet! previously ran from 1988 to 1997, and former hosts have included Bruce Forsyth, Matthew Kelly and Darren Day. The new series will take place outside of the studio for the entirety of each episode, with celebrities including Zoe Ball, Rob Beckett, Alex Brooker, Rylan Clark, Alesha Dixon, Alison Hammond, and Danny Jones joining Mulhern across on location.

Rob Lowe Sent ‘Missing' Milk Cartons to West Wing Producers During Behind-the-Scenes Feud
Rob Lowe Sent 'Missing' Milk Cartons to West Wing Producers During Behind-the-Scenes Feud originally appeared on Parade. When The West Wing first aired in 1999, fans could not get enough of the political drama. The man who was supposed to be at the center of it all? The '80s heartthrob Rob Lowe. However, things spiraled behind the scenes due to Lowe noticing his character being slowly written off and pay disputes around his salary. In August 2023, the actor opened up about the experience on Penn Badgley's 'Podcrushed' podcast and likened it to being in a toxic relationship."I walked away from the most popular girl at school, but I also knew that it was a super unhealthy relationship, and it was the best thing I ever did," he said. However before he walked away, he admitted he did something gloriously petty. 'So a lot has been talked about my issues — such as they were — on The West Wing which I love, I love that show and everybody in it, it's all good now,' Lowe started. 'But there were some difficulties. At one point they had sort of written me off the show." "I didn't feel like I had a lot to do and so I made these [milk cartons] and I sent them to everybody affiliated with the show, the network, the studio, the producers, executives.' He plastered his face on the side like they used to do for missing kids, and added stats for his jilted character. 'It's a milk carton. I sent these to everybody,' Lowe continued. 'Let's see what the stats are. Sam Seaborn, 170 pounds. Eyes: blue. Missing since the Christmas episode 2002. Please call Bernie Brilstein (my manager), if you've seen this man.' Fans thought that the move was nothing short of iconic. "Who writes Rob Lowe off a show ??? But your response is hilarious," wrote one amused fan. "We need a New West wing with Sam as President," demanded another. "I loved you on WW and was devastated when they sent you to run for office in California," said another. "It was never the same without Sam." While things have since smoothed over since, it was still a pretty boss move to pull. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Rob Lowe Sent 'Missing' Milk Cartons to West Wing Producers During Behind-the-Scenes Feud first appeared on Parade on Jul 25, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 25, 2025, where it first appeared.
