Car catches fire after collision with big rig on Grass Valley highway
GRASS VALLEY — A driver was hospitalized with major injuries following a collision with a big rig on a Grass Valley highway, officials said Tuesday. California Highway Patrol's Grass Valley division said it happened around 2:15 p.m on the Golden Center Freeway (Highway 49) near Dorsey Drive. Firefighters responded to the scene due to the car catching fire from the collision. CHP said the driver was able to exit the burning car on his own and was alert. Photos from the scene released by CHP show the car crashed into the back of the big rig's trailer. The entire front end of the car, up to the windshield, was heavily damaged and stuck underneath the back end of the trailer, which was also damaged in the fire. California Highway Patrol Grass Valley The driver of the big rig was not injured. Golden Center Freeway was temporarily shut down south of Dorsey due to the crash and fire. Traffic was eventually able to pass through the center divider while officials worked to clear the scene. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

2 killed in fiery collision with semi-truck on 5 Freeway near Sylmar
Two people died after an SUV rear-ended a big rig on the 5 Freeway near Sylmar Thursday night. The collision happened at roughly 10:40 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway. After colliding with the semi-truck, the victims' SUV caught fire.

Big rig, school bus involved in separate crashes on Highway 17 in Santa Cruz Mountains
Separate crashes involving a school bus and a big rig caused lengthy traffic backups in both directions Monday morning on Highway 17 in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The California Highway Patrol said a semi-truck was traveling north on Highway 17 just after 11 a.m. when it overturned near Sugarloaf Road just south of Glenwood Cutoff. The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. The right lane was closed and the CHP said there was no estimated time for reopening. KPIX That crash followed one earlier in the morning about 1.5 miles away on Highway 17 involving a school bus traveling south. The CHP said 20 to 30 students were on board and some suffered minor injuries when their bus was apparently rear-ended near Vine Hill Road. The CHP said there were two vehicles involved in the crash. The CBS News Bay Area helicopter captured an image of a blue Mini Cooper off the road and in the bushes at the crash scene. Caltrans said southbound traffic was reduced to one lane while the crash scene was cleared.
