Netflix's #1 Show Is a Twisty Murder Drama Based on Real Events & It Looks Seriously Binge-Worthy
A new show just dropped on Netflix and it's already making major waves. The Waterfront premiered on June 19 and has rocketed straight to the top of Netflix's Top 10. Touted by Variety as a 'highly bingeable family soap' and compared by Slate to Yellowstone, the series is packed with small-town power struggles, deep-rooted secrets, and messy family drama. But here's what really sets it apart: it's inspired by the real-life story of creator Kevin Williamson. Yes, that Kevin Williamson—the mind behind Dawson's Creek and Scream—turned his own upbringing into a gripping TV drama. DANA HAWLEY/NETFLIX Set in the fictional town of Havenport, North Carolina, The Waterfront follows the Buckley family, once the town's ruling dynasty thanks to their grip on the fishing industry and restaurant scene. But things are falling apart fast. Patriarch Harlan (Holt McCallany) is recovering from two heart attacks and it's up to his wife Belle (Maria Bello) and son Cane (Jake Weary) to hold the business together. Meanwhile, daughter Bree (Melissa Benoist), who's in addiction recovery and has lost custody of her son, finds herself caught in a complicated romance that could unravel everything. DANA HAWLEY/NETFLIX As dramatic as that sounds, it's rooted in truth. Williamson grew up in New Bern, North Carolina, surrounded by the fishing life. 'I come from a family of fishermen—not just my dad, but the entire family,' he shares. 'Everyone I knew was a fisherman.' By the 1980s, that old-school fishing life was slipping away and Williamson's dad made a risky move. He started using his fishing boat to smuggle drugs. 'He was arrested for conspiracy to traffic marijuana—20,000 pounds,' Williamson told Time. 'They didn't just arrest my dad. They arrested a whole bunch of people. It was part of a cartel. They were the low men in the operation.' 'I always told my dad I was going to write the story,' Williamson adds. 'He said, 'Wait until I'm dead.'' The Waterfront cast also includes Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, Brady Hepner and Topher Grace in a guest role. All eight episodes are now streaming. Want all the latest entertainment news sent right to your inbox? Thought The Sirens Cast Looked Familiar? Here's Where You've Seen The Stars Before
If you've been on the hunt for a binge-able new series that throws us back into the messy world of the ultra-rich, critics have already been calling Sirens 'addictive' and 'preposterously fun'. Set at a luxury beach estate, the Netflix limited series follows a woman who begins to grow concerned about her sister's increasingly unhealthy relationship with her billionaire boss. With a host of big names making up the on-screen ensemble, including Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon and Meghann Fahy, the five-episode series has been hailed as a must-see for fans of shows like The White Lotus, The Four Seasons and The Perfect Couple. And if you've already started your Sirens Binge (or, indeed, finished it), there's a good chance you're already familiar with some members of the star-studded cast. So, if you're wondering where you recognise them from, allow us to refresh your memories… The iconic Hollywood actor has been a staple of the silver screen since the early 90s, making a name for herself in films like Boogie Nights, The End Of The Affair, The Hours and Far From Heaven, all of which she received Oscar nominations for. Julianne also delivered memorable performances in Magnolia, Hannibal, The Big Lebowski and Crazy, Stupid, Love. In 2015 she finally won her first Academy Award, taking home Best Actress for her performance in Still Alice in which she played a woman with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. More recently, she appeared alongside The Idea Of You star Nicholas Galitzine in last year's historical miniseries Mary & George, as well as opposite Natalie Portman in the soap-y May December. Meghann Fahy landed on many of our radars when she starred in season two of The White Lotus, joining the stacked cast to play Daphne, the wife of Cameron Sullivan (Theo James' character), who embark on the couple's holiday from hell together. However, she's been around much longer than that, playing Hannah O'Connor in American soap One Life To Live and Sutton Brady in millennial magazine drama The Bold Type, along with brief roles in TV series like Necessary Roughness, Political Animals and Chicago Fire. Gossip Girl superfans will have also watched Meghann's first ever time on a TV set after she briefly appeared as Devyn in season three episode three, titled The Lost Boy, a personal assistant to a businessman. Since The White Lotus, she's featured in the mystery drama miniseries The Perfect Couple, and is now dating her one-time co-star Leo Woodall, though the pair famously prefer to keep their relationship out of the spotlight. The star of 1984's iconic dance movie Footloose, Kevin Bacon gave some of his most memorable performances in Friday The 13th, Tremors and Apollo 13. His other big roles have included X-Men: First Class, JFK, Patriots Day, Mystic River, Death Sentence and Hollow Man. He also previously appeared on screen with his Sirens co-star Julianne Moore as rom-com villain David Lindhagen in Crazy, Stupid, Love. And let's not forget his starring role in the terrifyingly addictive cult drama The Following, in which he played former FBI agent Ryan Hardy. House Of The Dragon fans likely did a double take when they saw Milly without her bleach blonde Targaryen locks. The actor plays a young Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first season of the Game Of Thrones prequel, sharing the role with Emma D'Arcy. The Australian actor is also known for the comedy drama series Upright With Tim Minchin, along with TV series Reckoning, The Gloaming, A Place To Call Home and Pine Gap. Glenn is, of course, best known for playing bar owner Dennis Reynolds onIt's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, which he also co-developed and serves as an executive producer and writer on. You might have also watched him in A.P. Bio, The Mindy Project, That 80's Show, The Fugitive and season one of Fargo. As for his film career, he's starred in 2008 horror The Strangers, the 2023 biographical comedy-drama BlackBerry and Joss Whedon's 2005 space western Serenity. The US actor was nominated for an Emmy for playing Dennis Box in crime drama miniseries The Night Of, which co-stars Riz Ahmed. Bill also delivered a moving performance in the wildly popular The Queen's Gambit playing Mr Shaibel, the man who first introduces chess prodigy Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) to the game. His other big credit performances include Sound of Freedom, 12 Years A Slave, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer and Birdman. Earlier this year, he appeared in another Netflix original, Zero Day, with Robert De Niro. Felix Solis' most notable TV roles include playing Omar Navarro in Ozark, Detective Kevin Rodriguez in The Good Wife and Gus Flores in The Family. Sirens marks a reunion for Felix and Kevin Bacon, with whom he previously co-starred in The Following as Special Agent Jeffrey Clarke in The Following. His other brief TV stints include The Sopranos, The West Wing, Mindhunter, Law & Order, along with movie roles in The Forgotten, The International and Man On A Ledge. Some of Josh Segarra's most notable credits have included roles on Arrow, Orange Is The New Black, The Other Two and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Josh also starred opposite RuPaul in the short-lived Netflix comedy AJ And The Queen, and has a recurring role in the Emmy-winning sitcom Abbott Elementary. He was also in the 2023 sequel Scream VI with Jenna Ortega, and you may have seen him in movies like Trainwreck and Overboard. Best known for playing Fei Hargreeves in season three of The Umbrella Academy and Alma Walker in the second season of American Horror Story, subtitled Asylum, Britne has also been in Long Bright River, Dead Ringers, The Flash and The Path. If you caught the US remake of Skins, you will also have seen her as Cadie Campbell (based on Cassie Ainsworth from the original UK version). Before Sirens, you might have seen Lauren in TV shows like Hacks, Abbott Elementary, Arrested Development and Looking. Going even further back, she's been in single episodes of 2 Broke Girls, New Girl and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Her film credits, meanwhile, include Date Night, The Five-Year Engagement and The Little Hours. Between 2017 and 2022, Jenn starred as Jennifer Husser in the US comedy-drama Claws, and she has since gone on to appear in Dead Boy Detectives and Happy Face. Meanwhile, the TV credits on Jenn's CV include Justified, Above Average Parents and Saint George. Amazon Prime adds 'bingeable' crime drama to its streaming platform - and urges subscribers to 'give it a watch if you haven't already'
Amazon Prime has added a 'bingeable' crime drama to the streaming service - and fans tell others to 'give it a watch if you haven't already'. The Fall, which is created, written and directed by Allan Cubitt, hit our screens all the way back in 2013 on BBC Two. After three successful series, it concluded in 2016. An IMDB synopsis reads: 'A Detective Superintendent from England investigates a politically-sensitive murder in Belfast.' The show follows DSU Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) try and catch a serial killer Peter Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) who prays on women. The Fall has been available to watch on BBC iPlayer, but the series will be removed from the site very soon. But luckily fans will still be able to watch on Netflix and Amazon Prime. Those who have watched it have rushed online to share their rave reviews, with one writing on Reddit: 'It's a very tense watch. Phenomenal performances all round especially both Jamie Dornan and Gillian Anderson. 'There's 3 seasons all of which are equally as good as each other. It's such a binge-able show. Give it a watch if you haven't already. ' A second added: 'It's absolutely great, it's tense and sophisticated. I'd definitely recommend.' While a third commented: 'Brilliant in every aspect of a series. ' 'This show was absolutely fantastic,' wrote a fourth. Another enthusiastic viewer added: 'I watched this a while ago and really liked it. One of those shows that I wish would have gone on for more than 3 seasons, but I'm also glad they didn't drag it out too long. ' The programme has received an impressive 85 per cent on the Tomatometer, as well as 85 per cent on the Popcorn meter. Meanwhile others have taken to IMBD to share their thoughts. One said: '"The Fall" is a very well filmed and developed story. The acting of all the cast is accurate and right where it needs to be. No more, no less.' 'AMAZING - the most perfectly executed programme ever,' wrote another. 'Top quality,' added a third. Praising its overall production, another wrote: 'The Fall is brilliantly shot. It's slow, careful and deliberate direction synchronise with the plot and leading protagonists. Gillian Anderson is mesmerising.' The Fall has a star-studded cast; as well as Gillian, John Lynch plays ACC Jim Burns, Stuart Graham is DCI Matthew Eastwood, Niamh McGrady plays PC Danielle Ferrington and Archie Panjabi plays Professor Reed Smith. Meanwhile Bronagh Waugh plays Peter Paul Spector's wife. Valene Kane plays Rose Stagg, Jonjo O'Neill plays Tom Stagg and Laura Donnelly takes on the role of Sarah Kay. Elsewhere, TV fans were left gripped by a 'masterpiece' period drama. The English, written and directed by Hugo Blick, hit our screens back in 2022. The revisionist Western six-part series landed on Amazon Prime Video in the US, but was also released on BBC Two for those in the UK. Although it was released three years ago, some have only just noticed the drama is available to watch on iPlayer.
