Ocean City boardwalk panic caused by fireworks, not gunfire, police say
Ocean City officials have confirmed that fireworks — not gunfire — were the source of loud noises that caused panic and sent crowds scrambling on the boardwalk Friday night. 'Some witnesses reported 'shots fired,' but we can confirm that there were NO firearm-related injuries involved,' the department said in a statement posted on its Facebook page. 'There is no ongoing threat to the public.' The commotion occurred after a group of individuals discharged fireworks into a crowd in the downtown area for a July 4 celebration, according to police. An Ocean City police official confirmed to The Baltimore Sun multiple arrests were made in connection with the incident but could not provide any further information. In addition, Ocean City police reported a nonfatal shooting near 28th Street and Philadelphia Avenue early Saturday morning. Summer is in full swing, which means it's time for walks on the boardwalk. And if you want to visit a classic one, you'll find one of the very best in Connecticut with stunning views. USA TODAY 10BEST Readers' Choice Awards recently its public space rankings, and one boardwalk in Connecticut ranked among the best in the country. The annual 10BEST awards highlight the best in travel, food and lifestyle, and winners are chosen by a public voting poll after being nominated by industry experts. In the public spaces awards, highlighting the top parks, playgrounds, trails and more from across the country, the Ocean Beach Park Boardwalk in New London ranked second for best boardwalk. Here's what to know about the state's top-rated boardwalk. Located at the end of Ocean Avenue in New London, Ocean Beach Park is a half-mile white sand beach overlooking Long Island Sound. According to USA TODAY, the beach's boardwalk is a "New England gem" which "combines classic boardwalk charm with modern amenities." Boardwalk activities at Ocean Beach Park include an arcade, a playground, a gift shop, mini golf, a triple water slide, a spray park and an Olympic-size swimming pool. Those looking to get away from the water can enjoy a walk on the park's nature trail, overlooking the beautiful Alewife Cove. Beachgoers can also enjoy a variety of classic boardwalk rides, including the spinning Scrambler, the dizzying Octopus and an old-school carousel. The boardwalk also frequently hosts special events, such as music concerts and firework shows. Worked up an appetite from a busy day on the boardwalk? Ocean Beach has multiple casual dining options with spectacular views of the ocean, including the Sandbar Cafe, the Boardwalk Galley and for a sweet summer treat, the Boardwalk Creamery. Ocean Beach Park is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with parking costing $30 on weekdays or $40 on weekends and holidays. Certain attractions on the boardwalk may have additional costs. Chéticamp boardwalk shutting down due to safety concerns
Social Sharing There will be no strolls along Chéticamp's community boardwalk this summer as the aging structure is being closed down due to safety concerns. Alfred Poirier, acting president of the Chéticamp Economic Council, said the non-profit group has decided that keeping the boardwalk open is too risky and he said there is no money in the budget to replace it. "It is very dangerous and it's a very sad situation for our citizens of Chéticamp and surrounding areas that the [council board] had to make a major decision that we didn't take lightly," said Poirier. "But when you don't have the finances, you don't have the structure and … you're scared of liability issues, that's where it came up to." The nearly 30-year-old walkway offers a scenic view of the community's harbour and lighthouse, but in recent years it has been badly damaged by severe weather, including a post-tropical storm in 2019. Poirier said there has been some patchwork on the boardwalk, but storms have caused it to splinter and the coastline it sits on is eroding. Another major challenge is the boardwalk does not generate any revenue, although it does receive some donations from local businesses. "We're always short of money," said Poirier. "We have no other revenue or income coming in. We have different organizations using the boardwalk.… But at the same time nothing is being charged and it's a major problem to get the money to operate this venture." Lisette Aucoin-Bourgeois, executive director of Les Trois Pignons — Chéticamp's cultural centre, information centre and museum — said it's disappointing to see the boardwalk closed for the season, but not surprising. "I think the tourism sector knew that this was bound to happen and probably the only way to address it is to completely shut it down," she said. Council members are planning to address the boardwalk issue at a meeting this fall. Portions of the boardwalk are owned and maintained by the council, while others are owned and maintained by adjacent businesses. The Municipality of Inverness County has said it is not responsible for the operation or maintenance of the boardwalk, although it has supported the council through several planning processes and patchwork measures over the past few years. Megan Wludyka, the Inverness communications officer, said the municipality does not have the means to replace the boardwalk without substantial funding from other levels of government. Wludyka said the municipality has not had a request for additional funding since the closure announcement.

Jersey Shore businesses report economic upswing from Memorial Day Weekend
The crowds have thinned a bit down the shore compared to the busy holiday weekend, and despite some early concerns and economic uncertainty, many businesses are reporting a strong start to the season. Inside the Surf Mall at T-Shirt World in Ocean City, New Jersey, Rafael Roman was moving at full steam working the heat press. Roman was putting decals on shorts and sweatpants to restock the inventory. "Seeing the whole boardwalk filled with everybody, we were just like, 'Yeah we're back, summer is back, like, let's go!'" Roman said. "We missed it." CBS Philadelphia Tuesday meant back to work and school for many people, but there was still a decent crowd on the boardwalk as some families extended their stay down the shore. With the weather being a bit chilly to jump in the ocean, some businesses say that meant more people were on the boardwalk shopping and spending money. "It was booming up here on the boardwalk all day, and the nighttime was still fine, it was just exceptionally strong during the day," said Wes Kazmarck, the president of the Ocean City Boardwalk Merchants Association. Kazmarck owns businesses in Ocean City, as well as Stone Harbor and Sea Isle. He said all three spots were busy. "We were cautiously optimistic, and it was a great start. We are really excited, and I think any concerns anyone had, I think everyone is pretty pumped for the summer to get rolling now," Kazmarck said. CBS Philadelphia "They had a beautiful weekend down here, I heard it was gorgeous," said Peggy Waters, who lives in Bryn Mawr. Waters' her vacation was just getting started. She decided to avoid the crowds and the traffic, and for the third year in a row she hit the shops after Memorial Day. "So tomorrow we will probably go over to the casino and spend the day over there and then have dinner somewhere. We might go to a movie too," Waters said. The Ocean City Chamber of Commerce said hotels and motels also saw a busy weekend, and occupancy was at 85-90%, which is up from last year's Memorial Day weekend. Businesses are now hoping the momentum continues through summer. "Just seeing how this Memorial Day weekend was, I feel as though we're going to have a good summer, 100%," Roman said.

What happened in Seaside Heights? 73 arrested, three stabbed over Memorial Day weekend
SEASIDE HEIGHTS - Seventy-three people were arrested here Memorial Day weekend during a 72-hour period marred by fights, unruly crowds and three stabbings that prompted police to shut down the boardwalk May 26. The boardwalk reopened later in the day, following the arrests of 52 adults and 21 juveniles from 6 a.m. May 23 to 6 a.m. May 26, said Detective Steve Korman, police spokesman. One of the arrested adults was charged with possessing a firearm, he said. Five minutes after the last of three reported stabbings in that time period, Police Chief Thomas Boyd shut down the boardwalk at 12:05 a.m. on May 26, "taking a proactive approach to ensure public safety,'' Korman said. None of the stabbings were fatal, and none of the victims cooperated in a law-enforcement investigation, he said. Also during the 72-hour period, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in neighboring Seaside Park and flown by helicopter to a medical facility, Korman said. The holiday weekend brought approximately 100,000 visitors to the borough, Korman said. "The last few days have been mayhem in this town,'' said Sarah Frailey, a bartender at EJ's Tap House on the boardwalk. "It's normally not like this,'' Frailey said. "There's a ton of kids here over Memorial Day weekend, more than the usual in the last few years, a lot of fights on the boardwalk. "Kids were out of control,'' she said. "It's like the Jersey Shore show.'' After large groups of unruly teens created havoc on the boardwalk on Memorial Day weekends in the recent past, borough officials this year put in place plans to increase police presence and enforce a curfew on minors from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. "There's supposed to be a curfew for kids who are underage, who aren't supposed to be on the boardwalk after 10 p.m.,'' Frailey said. "But I think the last two nights, Friday and Saturday, there was no way they could contain that in a sense, and then they finally had enough after last (Sunday) night and did an evacuation on the whole boardwalk.'' Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said police did not shut down any businesses on the boardwalk. Billhimer said detectives from his office were in Seaside Heights all weekend to assist borough police. "While I am disappointed by the conduct of some of the people who came to visit Seaside Heights this weekend, the Seaside Heights Police Department and all of the assisting agencies, by and large, did a great job this weekend ensuring the safety of the majority of our visitors and our locals,'' Billhimer said. Also assisting borough police over the weekend were staff from the Ocean County Sheriff's Office and Brick police, including K9 units from both agencies, Korman said. Among the numerous calls police responded to were the three stabbings. The first occurred about 8 p.m. on May 24 on the ocean block of Webster Avenue, Korman said. There, officers found a 21-year-old man suffering from a stab wound to his back, the detective said. The victim was evaluated by Tri-Boro First Aid Squad and flown by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, he said. About 6:45 p.m. on May 25, officers responded to a report of another stabbing at Sherman Avenue and Ocean Terrace, where they located a 22-year-old man suffering from a stab wound to the hip, Korman said. The victim was evaluated by Tri-Boro First Aid and taken by ambulance to Jersey Shore, he said. About 12:00 a.m. on May 26, police responded to Kearney Avenue and Ocean Terrace for a report of a third stabbing. There, they found an 18-year-old man with a stab wound to the right thigh, Korman said. He, too, was evaluated by Tri-Boro First Aid and taken by ambulance to Jersey Shore. Five minutes later, the police chief ordered the boardwalk shut down, Korman said. All three stabbing victims were "uncooperative and signed off an any further police assistance/investigation,'' Korman said. About 1 a.m. on May 26, police were called to a fight at Grant Avenue and Ocean Terrace. During the police response, Patrolman James Hans arrested Byron Czaplicki, 21, of Beachwood, and charged him with possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice, Korman said. Billhimer pledged continued support to Seaside Heights' police chief and Mayor Anthony E. Vaz. "We will work with Seaside Heights and all of our shore towns to make sure we are continually making improvements in strategic planning for these holiday weekends,'' Billhimer said. "We will not tolerate lawless behavior anywhere here in Ocean County.''
