Midland man pleads guilty to dangerous driving in hit-and-run

Midland man Patrick McGuire pleaded guilty in a hit-and-run case that sent a woman to the hospital in serious condition. A Midland, Ont. man initially charged with attempted murder has pleaded guilty to being behind the wheel of a car that hit a woman before fleeing the scene last summer. Patrick McGuire, 40, walked out of the Barrie courthouse Friday in good spirits after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing bodily harm and leaving the scene of a crash that sent a Midland woman to hospital in life-threatening condition in August 2024. McGuire, who is represented by defence lawyer Stephanie Marcade, accepted responsibility for his role in the hit-and-run that nearly killed Michelle Vainer following an argument at a home near Wellington and Robert streets. McGuire had been with his girlfriend, Georgia Quanbury, that night when Quanbury and Vainer got into a fight. McGuire, while behind the wheel of his car, hit Vainer who was rushed to hospital in Toronto and spent several weeks fighting for her life. Related Articles McGuire's guilty plea came two months after Quanbury made a deal of her own after admitting to assaulting three women and threatening Vainer, who has an outstanding criminal matter of her own before the courts scheduled for trial this fall. Vainer has a history of drug charges dating back several years. The allegations against her have not been tested in court. Following five months in jail, McGuire was released from custody under strict conditions in early January. He remains banned from driving ahead of sentencing scheduled for early September.

Eldest son of Norway's Crown Princess, Marius Borg Hoiby, charged with multiple rapes

The eldest son of Norway's Crown Princess has been charged with multiple counts of rape, sexual assault and bodily harm. Marius Borg Hoiby, who was born as a result of a relationship before Crown Princess Mette-Marit's marriage to Crown Prince Haakon, has been under investigation since his arrest on August 4 last year on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend. The arrest led to a slew of allegations against the 28-year-old that have shaken the royal family. Police Attorney Andreas Kruszweski told reporters on Friday local time the 10-month investigation had been completed. Mr Hoiby was suspected of 'one count of rape with sexual intercourse' and 'two counts of rape without sexual intercourse', Mr Kruszweski said. Mr Hoiby's lawyer, Ellen Holagar Andanaes, told news agency NTB her client rejected the three rape allegations. Mr Hoiby has previously admitted to assault and vandalism in the August 2024 incident. In a public statement 10 days after his arrest, he said he had acted 'under the influence of alcohol and cocaine after an argument', having suffered from 'mental troubles' and struggling 'for a long time with substance abuse'. Behind bars Police said Mr Hoiby was also suspected of four counts of sexually offensive behaviour, one count of abuse in a close relationship, two counts of bodily harm, one count of vandalism, one count of issuing threats, five violations of restraining orders, one count of insulting a police officer, and five traffic offences. 'I cannot elaborate on the number of victims in the case other than to confirm that we are talking about a double-digit number,' Mr Kruszweski said. Mr Hoiby has been in the eye of a media storm since his arrest. When the rape allegations emerged in November, he spent a week behind bars in custody – unprecedented for a member of Norway's royal family. After his release, he reportedly went to rehab in London. Mr Hoiby is the child of a brief romance between his mother and Morten Borg – who has also been convicted of abuse and drug-related crimes – at a time when the future princess was part of Norway's house music scene, known for its abundance of marijuana and ecstasy. Bad company Mr Hoiby was propelled into the spotlight at the age of four when his mother married Norway's Crown Prince, with whom she went on to have two more children. He was raised by the royal couple alongside his step-siblings Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, aged 21 and 19. Unlike them, however, he has no official public role. Despite Crown Princess Mette-Marit's attempts to shield him from the public eye, he has made headlines over the years. 'He has been put in a virtually impossible position: one foot in, one foot out. He is not technically part of the royal household but he grew up in it,' said Sigrid Hvidsten, royals commentator at the newspaper Dagbladet. 'He has lived in a grey zone, a kind of gilded cage,' she told AFP in December 2024. A cage that has not stopped him from keeping bad company in recent years. According to media reports, he has hung out with gang members, Hells Angels bikers and members of Oslo's Albanian mafia. In 2023, police contacted him to have a cautionary talk after he was seen moving in the same circles as 'notorious criminals'. Once the assault scandal hit the headlines in August, it emerged that Mr Hoiby had already been arrested in 2017 for using cocaine at a music festival. He has lived a comfortable lifestyle provided for by his mother and stepfather, and has shown little interest in academic studies or work. Several of his ex-girlfriends were among the plaintiffs in cases against him.

Norwegian royal charged with rape; police say victim count in double digits

The eldest son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of the heir to the throne, Crown Prince Haakon, Marius Borg Høiby is facing charges of multiple counts of rape, sexual assault and bodily harm. The charges come after a month-long investigation following Høiby's multiple arrests in 2024. Oslo Police Attorney Andreas Kruszewski confirmed that the number of victims is in the "double-digits." Kruszewski said the charges include one case of rape with intercourse, two cases of rape without intercourse, four cases of sexual assault and two cases of bodily harm, the Associated Press reported. Kruszewski also reportedly said that 28-year-old Høiby was cooperative during police questioning. The Oslo Police District put out a statement saying that they carried out a "thorough investigation", with a "large number of witness interviews, several searches and a review of extensive digital material," according to a BBC translation. Fox News Digital has reached out to Høiby's attorney, Petar Sekulic, for comment, but according to multiple reports he said that his client does not acknowledge any wrongdoing, particularly in the cases involving sexual abuse and violence. Several outlets also reported that the Royal House of Norway said that the case was proceeding through the legal system and it had nothing to offer, though the palace has not yet replied to Fox News Digital.
