Fire pit accident involving 7-year-old girl prompts safety warning from Twin Cities mother
Twin Cities mother gives warning to other parents about bonfires Twin Cities mother gives warning to other parents about bonfires Twin Cities mother gives warning to other parents about bonfires In the wake of the Fourth of July weekend, when many spent time outside, a Twin Cities mother has a message for other parents after her daughter experienced a horrific injury from a bonfire. So far this year, Hennepin Healthcare's Burn Center and Acute Burn Clinic in Minneapolis have treated 14 patients with injuries from campfires. One of those patients is 7-year-old Sage Anderson from Nowthen, Minnesota, just north of Anoka. Sage Anderson had her one-month check-up appointment on Monday morning to take a look at how her left arm is healing after suffering deep second-degree burns. She accidentally tripped and fell into a fire pit at her family's cabin on June 7. The flames were out, but the coals were still extremely hot and caused a lot of significant damage. Sage Anderson's mother, Jamie Anderson, has a warning for parents as summer rolls on and more people spend time around outdoor fires. "Look at fire like it's deep water, sharp tools, look at it like it's extremely dangerous," Jamie Anderson said. "Our whole lives we've been saying, 'Don't go running by the fire. Be careful. Slow down. Don't stand on the bricks.' It can just happen so fast." For anyone who suffers a similar injury, Hennepin Healthcare medical experts recommend getting the wound wrapped in a cold compress and using a medicated cream, like Neosporin, before getting to the hospital. "It's been so common this time of year," Sarah Smith, Hennepin Healthcare Burn Clinic physician assistant, said. "Especially at the beginning of summer, everybody is excited to get outside and have those bonfires." Hennepin Healthcare says it addressed seven fireworks-related injuries over the weekend, which the medical facility says is much higher than usual, and encourages people to continue to stay safe this summer.

B.C. driver who caused life-altering injuries for A&W worker gets $1,500 fine
An 80-year-old driver who crashed into a North Vancouver fast food restaurant, sending a worker scalded with oil to the ICU, has been fined $1,500. The driver who changed Ruby Punzalan's life forever has received a fine for driving without due care and attention. George Collins was behind the wheel of the SUV that collided with the wall of the North Vancouver A&W restaurant Punzalan was managing in March 2024. The collision splashed burning hot oil from the restaurant's deep fryer all over Punzalan's face and body. She spent three weeks in intensive care and almost a month in a burn recovery unit. Earlier this year, the B.C. Prosecution Service approved the charge against Collins in connection to the case. Driving without due care and attention is a Motor Vehicle Act offence, not a Criminal Code offence. That distinction means Punzalan cannot sue Collins or ICBC for compensation. Under ICBC's 'enhanced care' model, victims can only sue for damages if the driver is convicted of a criminal offence. In January, Punzalan told CTV News WorkSafeBC has been covering 90 per cent of her salary, as well as her medical bills and therapist appointments. She said ICBC contacted her monthly to check-in, but she had not received any compensation from the Crown corporation up to that point. In a statement at the time, ICBC said 'currently, WorkSafeBC is providing all recovery benefits for Mrs. Punzalan and we're not aware of any additional benefits needed.' It added it would provide coverage for any treatments or benefits needed under enhanced care that aren't covered by WorkSafeBC. Collins entered a guilty plea in the case earlier this week, according to the BCPS. The 80-year-old was sentenced to a fine of $1,500, plus a victim surcharge of $225. Waipara Adventure Centre operator charged after boy badly burned on school trip
Waipara Adventure Centre. Photo: Google Maps The trust behind a North Canterbury adventure camp where a nine-year-old Hokitika boy was badly burned is facing a criminal charge. A Christchurch District Court appearance by Sure and Stedfast Development Trust, which ran the Waipara Adventure Centre near Amberley, was adjourned until October on Wednesday morning. The Hokitika Primary School student was flown to Christchurch Hospital, before being transferred to Middlemore Hospital's burns unit, where he was placed in a medically-induced coma in 2023. He required dozens of surgeries, only returning to school part-time six months after his injury. The trust was facing a charge of exposing an individual to a risk of harm or illness, which was believed to involve a small camp stove malfunctioning. The charge, laid by WorkSafe under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, carried a maximum fine not exceeding $1.5 million dollars. A Go Fund Me was set up to support the boy and his family raised over $26,000. WorkSafe inspectorate head Rob Pope said he recognised the bravery of the boy, who had endured multiple surgeries and continued to live with the effects of his burns. "Businesses and organisations must manage their risks, and when they do not we will hold them to account," he said.
