Emeryville considering creating bus-only, bike-only lanes on 40th Street
A proposal for bus-only and bike-only lanes in part of Emeryville's busiest corridor has some businesses in the area concerned. "It's a third-generation business, and I'm generation two," said Deborah Cohen. She and her family have owned Rug Depot Outlet in Emeryville for the past 55 years. The store has more than 10,000 rugs in the showroom and warehouse. There are massive semi-trucks coming and going almost every day, not just for her business but others nearby like Pottery and Beyond, Granite Expo and more. "A lot of our neighbors are light industrial or in the catering business, and so this street takes delivery on very heavy product," said Cohen. That is why she and about a dozen neighboring businesses are so concerned about the 40th Street Multimodal project that's moving forward in the city council. The plan is to make 40th Street more friendly to pedestrians, cyclists, and buses by closing side streets to vehicles, and eliminating one traffic lane in each direction, and converting it into dedicated bus and bike lanes. The total cost of the project is just over $30 million. "This project is in a big way looking to accommodate all of the users who want to come into the city," said Emeryville's Mayor David Mourra. He said they've been studying the corridor since 2018 and have done traffic studies looking at what makes the most sense. He said this plan helps make the 40th Street area safer for not just pedestrians and cyclists, but people in cars as well. "We are really trying to improve things for everyone, and sometimes there are tradeoffs, and we understand that and we understand that sometimes change can be difficult," said Mourra. For Deborah and other business owners, they feel like the change is only a positive for a small few at the expense of legacy businesses that built Emeryville into what it is today. "40th to me is a throughway that was made for this exact thing, which is deliveries of trucks coming off of freeways, and to make 40th street into one lane car traffic doesn't feel safe or relevant," she said. The city council still has to vote on the plan and that vote is expected sometime toward the end of the year, and if it is approved, the project wouldn't be completed until 2028.

‘Long overdue': Toronto City Council approves dedicated transit lanes on Dufferin and Bathurst
Dedicated transit lanes are coming to Dufferin and Bathurst streets. Toronto City Council approved on Wednesday the installation of dedicated bus lanes on Dufferin Street and dedicated streetcar lanes on Bathurst Street—both of which will be located south of Bloor Street. Before the vote, Mayor Olivia Chow told councillors that big cities have bus lanes and it's time for Toronto to do the same, noting that the RapidTO surface transit network plan to enhance bus and streetcar service has been in place since 2019. 'We will move forward on these long overdue RapidTO bus lanes, dedicated bus lanes,' Chow said. On Dufferin Street, the curbside lanes will be converted to priority bus lanes, while on Bathurst Street, the centre lanes will be changed to priority streetcar lanes. The city said construction for the transit lanes would begin in the fall and is expected to be finished before the start of the World Cup. According to staff, the implementation of the transit priority lanes on Dufferin and Bathurst is expected to cost $8 million. Staff initially recommended putting dedicated transit lanes on both streets as far north as Eglinton Avenue West, but that plan was scaled back after several businesses and neighbourhood groups pushed back. During her remarks, Chow acknowledged the concerns of some communities, saying they're legitimate. 'They do have some concerns. They talk about on-street parking. Where are we going to park, especially if I'm disabled? Who's going to pick me up? Where are they going to pick me up? And what about loading? If I have a small business, where will I load? All of these need to be worked out,' Chow said. The motion approved during Wednesday's meeting includes an item directing staff to report back after the World Cup with recommendations for the next steps for future implementation of dedicated transit lanes on Dufferin and Bathurst between Bloor Street and Eglinton Avenue. A Toronto transit advocacy group praised the approval of dedicated transit lanes, saying it is a huge step forward. 'Implementing these lanes will make transit more reliable and encourage more people to take a bus or streetcar instead of driving,' said Andrew Pulsifer, the executive director of TTCriders. 'Transit users will continue to speak up and fight for common-sense solutions like dedicated transit lanes.'

Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus lane ticketing enforcement goes into effect today
Beginning today, if you're caught driving or parking in the new, red bus lanes in downtown Pittsburgh, expect a ticket, as enforcement starts today. This begins after Port Authority Police have been giving verbal warnings since the lanes, which are for buses and emergency vehicles only, were installed last month. The tickets that will be issued will be $25 for the violations, but the associated fees that will come with it will bring the cost to nearly $200. It applies to every private vehicle, as well. This includes pickups, dropoffs, deliveries, and anything else in the red lanes. Earlier this year, Pittsburgh Regional Transit and the city began installing red bus lanes downtown in an effort to keep buses moving and get passengers to their destinations faster. PRT says that dedicated bus lanes are a major step towards improving service and reducing congestion, and says this will transform daily commutes and make public transit more reliable. "Ultimately, it will be Fifth Avenue to here on Liberty Avenue to Sixth Avenue that will be the full Downtown loop," said Amy Silberman of PRT. The routes included in the red bus lanes will be 61A, 61B, 61C, and 71B will each travel in the new lanes, heading inbound on Fifth Avenue and outbound on Sixth Avenue. For full schedules and details, you can check out Pittsburgh Regional Transit's website at this link.
