Person trapped, caravans lifted off ground amid reports of tornado in Northland
Photo: Google Maps Two caravans have been lifted and one person is trapped at a Northland holiday park in what is being described as a "mini tornado". One person is understood to be injured. Fire and Emergency said they were called to Tauranga Bay Holiday Park about 9.15am on Tuesday. They had four appliances there. St John's said they were also at the scene. MetService said intense rain and thunderstorms in the area meant there was the potential for a tornado. But a spokesperson could not say whether one had occurred. However, wind gusts of up to 75km/h had been recorded in the Kaeo area. Sign up for Ngā Pitopito Kōrero , a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.

Brazen $300,000 act prompts 'crucial' caravan warning amid growing Aussie trend
An Australian business owner is desperately seeking justice over the theft of two caravans — estimated to be worth more than $300,000 combined. He's now urging other dealerships and motorhome enthusiasts to always install GPS tracking devices to ensure they don't suffer a similar fate. Business owner Vlad, from Prime Edge Caravans in Victoria, said the brazen thieves made off with two new vehicles in the early hours of Monday morning at his manufacturing dealership in Epping in Melbourne's north. He explained that first, the alleged offenders "cut the bollards" at the entrance to the property, and then, about three hours later, returned for the caravans. CCTV shows the thieves making off with one van initially, before allegedly returning to take a second. Vlad said they then returned a third time with a trailer and "stole all our materials". "Lock your vans and make sure you have GPS tracking in every single one that's on the lot. Also, secure your factory or yard with extra protection," he warned in an interview with Yahoo News on Tuesday. "GPS trackers are crucial — that way, the police have a chance of recovering anything stolen." A clause in Vlad's insurance policy excludes coverage for theft from open-air storage, meaning vehicles kept outside are likely not covered. As a result, the recent theft of his caravans is not eligible for an insurance payout. Vlad said the team immediately reported the crime to police on Monday, who commenced an investigation. A spokesperson for Victoria Police provided an update on Tuesday. "Police are investigating after two caravans were stolen in Epping," a spokesperson told Yahoo. "Officers have been told that over two nights, two caravans were stolen, along with a fridge and multiple air conditioning units. The investigation remains ongoing." Vlad, who has been in business for nine years, said it's the first time he's ever had a caravan stolen. He now hopes the security footage, which contains audio, will lead to arrests. According to RACV, data collected by the state's Crime Statistics Agency showed a steep rise in caravan theft last year. In the 12 months to June, 2024 in Victoria, there were reportedly 174 caravans stolen across the state, up almost 67 per cent since 2022. "While vans may not seem as appealing an item to steal due to their size, the data is showing that thefts of these usually highly valuable assets are still occurring and, in fact, they are on the rise," RACV General Manager Motoring Jeff Ames said in October. "RACV recommends having caravan insurance in place to protect your van in case something were to happen". Caravan thefts or attempted thefts have reached their highest level in 10 years in Victoria, RACV and the state's Neighbourhood Watch announced in October. Caravan stolen while entire Aussie family slept inside Major $700 issue facing Aussie caravan drivers: 'Highly stressful' Grey nomads all say one thing to young solo travellers Across the country, all states and territories except for the ACT saw a jump in the number of motor vehicle thefts last year, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports. In August 2024, a caravan was allegedly taken with a Queensland family, including young children, still inside. Do you have a story tip? Caravan occupants in Celbridge carpark face possible contempt over refusal to leave
Three caravans that have been parked in a car park in Celbridge, Co Kildare , since October must be removed by this Thursday, July 10th, the High Court has ordered. If they fail to do so, the occupants could face applications by the car park owners to have them jailed for contempt, the court heard. Last week, Mr Justice Brian Cregan gave 'persons unknown' in occupation of the car park in the Abbey Car Park, Clane Road until Tuesday, July 8th, to vacate the property. It is owned by the St John of God Trust (Ireland), which uses it for car parking for its community-based services and tea rooms there and it also licenses it to Kildare County Council for use as a public car park. Since the caravans arrived, the court has been told, there has been disruption to the trust's services and intimidation and aggression towards patients and staff. There has also been an accumulation of waste throughout the car park. Early efforts by the county council to service notices directing the occupants to vacate the property have not been successful. Last Wednesday, following a one-side only represented application by the trust seeking the removal of the caravans and occupants, Mr Justice Cregan granted an interim order requiring that the car park be vacated by 1pm on Tuesday, July 8th. He said the occupants could turn up in court on Tuesday to make their case about the order if they wished. When the case returned, Conor Sheehan BL, for the trust, said there had been no appearance by the occupants and the caravans were still there. He asked the court to make its order stay in place pending full hearing of the case. Mr Justice Cregan was satisfied to do so and said if the caravans are not gone by Thursday at 1pm, the trust could take whatever steps it chooses to enforce the order including asking the court to issue an attachment and committal order which can lead to the imprisonment of the occupants for contempt.

Clifton Down vans 'not acceptable,' says Bristol North West MP
The Bristol MP representing people living around Clifton Down has said the situation with caravans and vehicles in the area is "not acceptable for anyone involved".Darren Jones, Labour MP for Bristol North West, met city council leader Tony Dyer, of the Green Party, at city hall as he called on the local authority to told the BBC the meeting had been "reassuring", but that he felt the current timescales for dealing with the issue "feel a bit slow".The council, which is no overall control, says it has begun meetings with those affected, as it seeks to develop a new policy supporting both people living in vans and the surrounding communities. It says this is "not a process we can rush". In recent months, tensions have been rising on the Downs, where more than 100 vehicles are inhabited."This situation has rumbled on too long, the council should have acted sooner," Jones said. "I've been reassured today that they have a plan in place that's coming forward after the summer and I expect action to be taken quickly after that."One of his requests is for Bristol City Council to collect data from people living in vans on the Downs, in order to better understand their motivations and work out how best to offer campaign group Protect the Downs has repeatedly criticised the local authority for not holding this information. Council sources suggest it can be challenging to monitor, as some of the population is transient while others may be reluctant to engage. Jones is also asking the council to create more appropriate temporary accommodation sites, similar to the modular homes recently created in Fishponds for people who are for People, which runs the scheme, is seeking to expand across the city, and said their units could go from design to completion within a year if they had the necessary Brown, of the social enterprise, said Bristol City Council had been "very supportive" of its work, as it sought to set up small developments with 10-15 units around the city."This could be done all over Bristol. We are looking at what land is available, and what we can do to procure that land. Obviously that is difficult." Increase since pandemic Across the whole of Bristol, the city council estimates there are about 650 lived-in vehicles, up from about 150 before the vast majority of the increase happened during the tenure of Labour mayor Marvin Rees, before he left the post in 2024 and it was whether Labour should take some responsibility for the rise in numbers, Jones pointed to a report published by the city council in February 2024, which made several recommendations."This became a really big issue towards the back-end of the last Labour [mayoral] administration," Jones said. "Action was not taken off the back of that report and that's what we're pushing for."The council says it is taking a "proactive stance on addressing the issues that have been allowed to get progressively worse over the last several years".The issue is due to be discussed at a meeting of Bristol City Council on Tuesday, after more than 4,000 Bristol residents signed a petition calling for the authority to stop people living in and around the area.
