Two in court following care home smash

Two 21-year-olds have appeared in court after a stolen car crashed into a care home and two elderly residents later died. Sam Asgari-Tabar, of no fixed address, and Reece Parish, of Fordham Road, Sunderland, appeared separately at Newcastle Magistrates' Court following the crash on Wednesday night at Highcliffe Care Home, Witherwack, Sunderland. A blue BMW 3-series which was reported stolen was being pursued by police when it crashed into a wall of the care home, causing extensive structural damage which meant that the building had to be evacuated. Initially, Northumbria Police said eight residents required hospital treatment. On Friday, the force said a woman in her 90s and a woman in her 80s, neither of whom were in the eight taken to hospital, had died. Police inquiries into their deaths continue. Asgari-Tabar appeared before the court charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, said to be a resident who suffered spinal fractures. He was also charged with robbery of the BMW 3-series, which he was allegedly test-driving, and kidnap of the woman who was taking him out in the vehicle. No pleas were entered and Asgari-Tabar was remanded in custody to appear before Newcastle Crown Court on August 11. Parish, who had several supporters in the public gallery, faced two charges, robbery of the car and kidnap. Magistrates said the case was so serious that it had to be dealt with at the crown court and he was also remanded in custody to appear on the same date as his co-accused. As he was taken down to the cells, supporters shouted: 'We are all with you. 'Take care of yourself, we all love you mate.' Previously, police said the car was reported as being stolen in the Fenham area of Newcastle at around 9.25pm and was seen in Sunderland 15 minutes later when a pursuit was authorised. Following the police pursuit, a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, officers said. Alternative accommodation has been found for the residents. On Friday, a spokeswoman for Avery Healthcare, which runs the care home, said: 'We are deeply saddened by the incident at our home in Sunderland and our thoughts are with all those affected. 'We are committed to supporting our residents, their families, and our dedicated staff during this incredibly difficult time.'

A blue BMW ploughed into Highcliffe Care Home, in Witherwack, Sunderland, on Wednesday night. Eight people were taken to hospital, including two women, in their 80s and 90s, who died the following day. Now, two men - both aged 21 - have been charged with a string of offences. Sam Asgari-Tabar, of Stratford Road, Sunderland, has been charged with robbery, kidnap, and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Reece Parish, of Fordham Road, Sunderland, faces charges of robbery and kidnap. He has also been charged in connection with a separate case of violent disorder linked to an incident in Sunderland city centre on August 2 last year. Northumbria Police received a call at about 9.20pm on Wednesday to reports of a car being stolen on Angerton Gardens in Fenham, Newcastle. The vehicle had earlier been reported stolen from the Fenham area of Newcastle after a proposed car sale. The BMW was then seen travelling on the A1231 eastbound in Sunderland, and police began to pursue it. Following a short pursuit, the car collided with the Highcliffe Care Home, which provides dementia care to around 60 residents, causing structural damage. Both men are due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Saturday. A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: 'With two men now charged, we would remind people to avoid speculation both online and in our communities as this could impact the ongoing court case. 'Our investigation into the deaths of two care home residents continues. 'Anyone with concerns or information can send Northumbria Police a direct message on social media or use live chat and report forms on the Force's website.' Two men arrested on suspicion of manslaughter both remain on police bail. Police today confirmed that two care home residents – a woman in her 90s and a woman in her 80s - died on Thursday. Chief Superintendent Mark Hall, of Northumbria Police, said: 'This is an extremely sad development and all of our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of everyone affected. 'We will continue to support them in any way that we can at this time. 'Our investigations remain at an early stage, and we would ask people to avoid speculation both online and in the community.' Two women die after BMW crashes into their care home

A woman in her 90s and a woman in her 80s, who were residents at Highcliffe Care Home on Whitchurch Road in Witherwack, died after being taken to hospital on Thursday, Northumbria Police confirmed. Pictures revealed a large hole in the corner of the building, with the crash said to have caused the first floor to collapse. Carol Wilson, the wife of one of the resident's who was moved from the care home, told the BBC: 'It [the car] hit the home and we got a call at 11.10pm hearing about the damage. I couldn't believe my eyes, the whole top floor has caved in.'
