A date? Just dinner? Doesn't matter. Justin Trudeau, Katy Perry buzz is good for their embattled brands
The rumour mill is in overdrive this week as former prime minister Justin Trudeau was spotted dining out with pop star Katy Perry in Montreal. TMZ photos and video of Perry and Trudeau talking to each other Monday night at a table for two at Le Violon, a fine-dining establishment run by celebrity chef Danny Smiles. Perry, who recently split from actor Orlando Bloom, joined Trudeau ahead of bringing her Lifetimes concert tour to Montreal's Bell Centre Wednesday night. She also played in Ottawa on Tuesday and will head to Quebec City on Friday. Trudeau, who separated from ex-wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau in 2023, resigned as prime minister earlier this year. The night out this week sparked gossip that the pair may have been on a date, even though Samantha Jin, a communications consultant for Le Violon, told The Canadian Press there was no indication of any sort of romance in the air. But when it comes to the buzz it's generating, the nature of their night out may not really matter. Both Trudeau and Perry have had a fair bit of bad press in recent years and public relations experts say their appearance together gives each a chance to change the conversation. "I thought that for both of them, this was actually a really great brand and reputational move," said Natasha Koifman, president of NKPR, a public relations agency in Toronto. The benefits of being seen Koifman says that while she interpreted their dinner as more intimate than others suggest, she has little doubt they wanted to be seen, as there were likely more private options than a table by the window. "I think that that was actually probably a strategic move," she told CBC News. "I think it elevates both of their brands, for very different reasons, to actually be seen together." 2025 wasn't the most favourable year for either Trudeau or Perry. Trudeau, 53, saw the writing on the wall for his political future, amid plunging poll numbers and internal Liberal Party strife, and announced his resignation in January, after nearly a decade in office. Perry, 40, has been battling headlines about her Lifetimes tour not selling out. Her space flight on Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin rocket in April, along an all-female celebrity team of space travellers was panned to the point that The Daily Beast writer Kevin Fallon raised the question: "Why does everyone hate Katy Perry so much?" Perry has come off as "a bit tone-deaf" and "self-indulgent" in interviews, Koifman says, and it was "just one bad move after another" that led to the pile-on from detractors. Eric Schiffer, CEO of Reputation Management Consultants in Beverly Hills, Calif., tends to agree, saying Perry "put herself in a position where she threatened career extinction." But he also believes Trudeau has a lot to gain from the talk about the outing, given he left office at a political low point. "You have these two individual brands that are in, in a way, outcasts that are coming together and ... could help to rebuild each other," he said. Celebrity factor The meet-up was somewhat unexpected, says Sharan Kaur, a principal at public relations and crisis management firm Navigator, but there's likely added interest because it's the first big "speculation of anything" Trudeau has had, post-politics and post-marriage. She's not surmising that it was anything other than just two people who wanted to have dinner together and says she doesn't actually think it's anyone's business. But it's not out of the ordinary for a political figure like Trudeau to pal around with celebrities, said Kaur, who also worked as deputy chief of staff for Trudeau's former finance minister Bill Morneau. She says he's always had his own "celebrity vibe to him" both domestically and internationally, especially considering his high-profile family — with his twice-prime-minister father Pierre Elliott Trudeau and mother Margaret Trudeau; both had their own relationships with celebrities after their split in 1977. But Kaur wonders if Trudeau may be trying to lean into that celebrity factor a bit more, now that he's no longer holding office. While she agrees that the rendez-vous is good press, she wonders if it might be less helpful to Trudeau's reputation if he is trying to be seen as "the serious guy" in his post-political life. "I would have probably avoided hanging out with celebrities in public spaces," she said, rather than feeding into pundits' narratives "that he kind of views himself as a celebrity." Tom Brady Skipped the Wedding Fling Rumors for a Heartwarming Weekend With His Daughter Vivian
While other newly single celebs used Jeff Bezos' Venetian wedding as a soft launch for their potential next fling (looking at you, Orlando Bloom), Tom Brady had other plans. Sure, he was seen dancing with Sydney Sweeney, catching up with Brooks Nader, and swapping yacht-side wisdom with Leo — but Brady's real glow-up moment came after the billionaire bash, when he ditched the gossip and headed to Ibiza with his favorite girl: 12-year-old daughter Vivian Lake Brady. After the three-day extravaganza where guests partied at the Gritti Palace until 3 a.m., Brady traded tailored tuxes and tabloid whispers for sun-drenched swims and father-daughter bonding. According to Hola!, the retired quarterback celebrated the Fourth of July aboard a luxury yacht off Ibiza's coast, diving into clear blue waters with Vivian by his side. He even posted a lighthearted video on his Instagram stories captioned, 'If she's doing it, then I guess I have to do it too.' Honestly? Peak dad energy. More from SheKnows Jeff Bezos' Alleged 'Wedding Gift' to Lauren Sánchez Could Cost Him Billions Their Mediterranean getaway came just days after Brady was spotted charming the Venice elite, dancing with Sweeney (whom he's been casually linked to post-Davino) and sharing hotel convos with Bloom, DiCaprio, and Bezos himself. While the internet speculated about new flings and old flames, including that cloak-and-dagger maybe-thing with Irina Shayk, Brady quietly flexed by focusing on what really matters: his kids. Just ahead of the Bezos wedding, he even spent some time in Japan with Vivian. Vivian, often called Gisele Bündchen's mini-me, has long been the center of Brady's post-retirement world. He's been open about co-parenting with Gisele since their 2022 split, and since hanging up his cleats in 2023, Brady's shifted from game-day legend to full-time dad. He now lives in Miami's Indian Creek Island — a.k.a. the Billionaire Bunker — in the $150 million home originally purchased with Bündchen (and reportedly on the market as of January), where he spends time with Vivian and her older brother Benjamin. His eldest son, Jack, 17, from his relationship with Bridget Moynahan, also remains a big part of his family life. So while the Bezos-Sánchez wedding gave us a few headlines and maybe a recycled dating rumor or two, Brady's sun-soaked yacht retreat with Vivian reminded us why he keeps winning parenting-wise. Jeremy Renner is upset about allegations by ex-wife Sonni Pacheco
Actor Jeremy Renner opened up about his divorce and custody battle with ex-wife Sonni Pacheco, and the allegations swirling these incidents. "Whatever stress I've had in life, I've tried to find a way of laughing through it," said the actor, adding, "And that's where sometimes cynicism comes out you think, 'I'm just going to laugh at this stuff'," he was quoted as saying by the New York Post. Renner continued, "Being accused of things you've not done, right? That doesn't feel good to anybody. It certainly doesn't feel good when you're a celebrity and it's known to everybody." Renner later shared that Pacheco's claims were not true. "No, and they happen all the time," he shared. "It's all the salaciousness that happens out there. It's clickbait, and it hurts my feelings, and it dehumanises people," he said. The Oscar nominee also explained that he ignored the public's reaction when the allegations first emerged. "It doesn't matter to me what people say," the Avengers star said. "They're saying it for their own reasons and not for the right reasons or the truth. And I'm used to that, because I'm a public figure. I don't read people's reviews, I don't read people's comments. I don't care. That's not part of my life." Renner and Pacheco were married for ten months before the model filed for divorce in December 2014. During their subsequent custody battle over daughter Ava, now 12, Pacheco claimed Renner threatened to kill her and once stuck a gun in his mouth and shot into the ceiling while Ava was in her room, according to TMZ. She also accused Renner of illegal substance abuse and leaving them on a bathroom counter where Ava could reach. However, he denied all of Pacheco's allegations at the time. Pacheco fought for sole custody of Ava, but she and Renner currently have joint custody. "Her mom and I get along very well, and we're in each other's lives," he shared. "It's lovely." Renner also shared that his relationship with his ex-wife is "no one's business." "It's great," he said. "She's got a new baby and she sends me beautiful pictures." Pacheco welcomed her daughter Wylder with hockey player Nate Thompson in March 2023.

Backstage at Star Awards 2025: Zhang Zetong was worried about his breath, Pierre Png made us blush with his outfit
At the Star Awards 2025 last Sunday night (Jul 6), you saw actor Christopher Lee go home as the night's biggest winner, witnessed actress Jessica Hsuan make history as the first overseas star to win an acting award, and probably experienced serious FOMO seeing the stars snap selfies with guest presenter Chow Yun Fat. But of course there's more to the show than what you saw on stage. was right there in the thick of things, watching the stars get all dolled up, secretly memorising their acceptance speeches and snacking on guava, all just to get some exclusive backstage gossip for our readers. YVONNE LIM'S RED CARPET DRESS BELONGED TO SOMEONE SPECIAL The 48-year-old actress, who received her All-Time Favourite Artiste award on Sunday night, revealed that her black and white polka-dotted dress belonged to her godmother. "Back in 2014, she told me to wear it if i ever became an All-Time Fave. And at that time, I didn't think it was possible," Lim said with tears in her eyes. DESMOND TAN'S DINNER WAS... SAD Desmond Tan was finishing up his protein bar when we approached him. "One of my friends gave it to me because she knows I'm on a diet for a new show. I'll have to go shirtless for it. That's probably my dinner 'cos I still need some energy for the day," said Tan with a smile. Guess we will be seeing thirst-traps from him again. PIERRE PNG MADE US BLUSH WITH HIS SHORTS The actor drew many glances when he arrived wearing really short shorts. He later told us he had actually come from a Hyrox team lunch, though that doesn't actually explain why his shorts had to be that short. Sadly, he didn't allow us to snap a pic of him in the shorts, but he seemed to really like wearing them and even paired them with the black button-up shirt he would wear on the red carpet. When we told him that he should just strut out in those shorts, he chuckled: 'If I really went out looking like that, the missus (Andrea De Cruz) would ask me not to go home tonight!" JERNELLE OH WAS PUT IN A NAUGHTY CORNER... KIND OF While other celebs milled about the hair and make-up area, Jernelle Oh appeared to be stuck in the corner. The 31-year-old actress, who was already all glammed up by the time arrived at 1pm, said she was told to just wait there for the final touches to be made to her outfit. But the poor girl ended up being cemented to the spot because her dress was too long and hence "cannot move". ZHAI SIMING WAS THE FAIREST OF THEM ALL Mirror, mirror on the wall... Every single time the team looked in Zhai Siming's direction, he was staring into a mirror. When we asked if he had to look at his own reflection whenever he had the chance, he said: "I've lost count [of the number of mirrors I've looked at], but I need to make sure I look good!" ZHANG ZETONG WAS WORRIED ABOUT HIS BREATH We guess The Most Popular Rising Star winner's best pal that evening was a Fisherman's Friend... you know, the mint. "I had Subway for lunch and I did not know there were raw onions in it," he laughed. CARRIE WONG IS LITERALLY TALL GIRL We caught sight of the 1.75m-tall actress, who was probably 1.8m in her heels, towering over everyone who was interviewing her. We overheard someone comment: "Wah look at the height difference between Carrie and [the interviewer]." Wong heard the quip and immediately responded with: "It's okay. Confidence does not come from height." Well, guess that's easy for her to say, right? WE CAUGHT JEREMY CHAN DOING SOMETHING SNEAKY After going around greeting fellow celebs like the social butterfly he is, we espied Jeremy Chan quietly snacking on guava while huddled in the corner of the make-up area. We later found out he was eating secretly because he was told that no food was allowed. Hmm, we could've sworn we saw many people snacking. Joanne Peh was even tucking into her lunch box while getting made up! HUANG SHINAN WAS JUST HAPPY TO BE THERE Is the former Mediacorp actor into vlogging now? That was our first thought when we saw Huang Shinan walking around with his phone in hand, speaking to the camera and occasionally getting a celeb pal to join him for a two-shot. When we caught up with him, Huang said: "I really treasure this moment. It's my first time being involved in this ceremony, and I want to keep [these videos] for the memories." It was 1pm then, and Huang, who was already in his red carpet outfit, told us his call time was supposed to be at 1.30pm. He said he showed up earlier so he could fully immerse himself in the vibe and catch up with old friends. He also said he would find a day to edit the videos, so guess we'll have to stay tuned for the finished product?
