Golf tournament funds mental health, addiction care in the northeast

A golf fundraiser on July 31 will be hosted at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club in support of Health Sciences North's mental health and addiction programs. Golfers will gather at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club on July 31 for a charity tournament supporting mental health and addiction services through the Health Sciences North (HSN) Foundation. The event, hosted by the Sudbury and District Medical Society, features a nine-hole tournament and dinner, with proceeds going toward expanding mental health care across the region. 'Mental health is a priority, and it's not something you can always see with the eye, but it's just as serious to us,' said Chelsea Parent, a community engagement specialist with HSN Foundation. 'We see over 14,000 outpatients a year, and that number continues to rise.' Dr. Rayudu Koka + Chelsea Parent Dr. Rayudu Koka (left), president of the Sudbury and District Medical Society and a local psychiatrist and Chelsea Parent (right), a community engagement specialist with HSN Foundation at the Idylwylde Golf and Country in Greater Sudbury, Ont., on July 3, 2025, to talk about an upcoming fundraising golf event in support of the foundation hosted by the medical society. (Alana Everson/CTV News Northern Ontario) Dr. Rayudu Koka, president of the Sudbury and District Medical Society and a local psychiatrist, cited multiple factors behind the increasing demand for mental health services. 'Socioeconomic conditions, employment problems, and also substance use seem to be on the rise, especially in northern Ontario – and Sudbury is not an exception here,' said Dr. Koka. 'That seems to be the problem we are facing.' Despite these challenges, Dr. Koka noted a positive trend: more people are seeking help without fear of judgment. 'The stigma still exists but [it's] much better now. People are educated, people seem to be coming forward more and more without that stigma being attached to their illness, because anyone can be ill,' he said. Funds raised will also support HSN's outpatient mental health services in Blind River, Elliot Lake, Espanola, Little Current, and St. Charles, expanding access to care across northeastern Ontario.

'Testament to Dave's popularity' - golf day celebrates legendary coach

United's Community Sports Trust team show off their 'Wilkesy' shirts in memory of David Wilkes at the golf day (Image: Barbara Abbott) David Wilkes was in the minds of everyone who took part in a special charity golf day held in the former Carlisle United coach's memory. Former players and colleagues were among the host of people who amassed at Eden Golf Club in Carlisle. Advertisement The event, which marked the second anniversary of the legendary youth coach's passing, saw 21 teams of four compete on the course, followed by a meal and raffle. It brought a number of familiar Carlisle United faces back together in memory of Mr Wilkes, while the event was also well supported by businesses. David Wilkes, who died two years ago, was remembered fondly at the golf day (Image: DAVID HOLLINS) Mick Wadsworth, the former United director of coaching, was part of the five-man organising committee, and was delighted with how the day celebrated the memory of his lifelong friend. 'It was a lovely, lovely day and a testament to Dave's popularity and importance in many people's lives,' Wadsworth told the News & Star. Advertisement 'It was a great turnout, and the day went relatively smoothly. The other guys on the organising committee – Colin Carter, John Halpin, Derek Walsh and Billy Rafferty – saw their workload much greater than mine through being based in Carlisle. 'They all worked extremely hard and I can't thank all of them enough. We got great support from local businesses in terms of entering teams and also with prizes for raffles and the auction. Former United stars Paul Proudlock, centre left, and Derek Mountfield, centre right, were among those taking part (Image: Barbara Abbott) 'Their generosity was superb – and Eden Golf Club put on the day brilliantly. It was a perfect venue for an event like this.' Advertisement The many former United players who attended, either to take part in the golf or attend the post-golf meal and raffle, included David Reeves, Derek Mountfield, Paul Proudlock, Darren Edmondson, Jeff Thorpe, Paul Murray, Gareth McAlindon, Tony Caig, Graham Anthony, Johnny Allan, Mark Boyd, Lee Dixon and Lee Hoolickin. United's new head of football operations Marc Tierney also took part, while the Blues' Community Sports Trust entered a team who all wore shirts with 'Wilkesy' on the back. Wadsworth added: 'We had 21 teams of four, with a shotgun start at 11am, with teams starting at the same time on different holes. 'The format worked very well, and we had various competitions as we went round – longest drive, nearest the pin, that sort of thing. Advertisement Carlisle United's Marc Tierney was among the competitors (Image: Barbara Abbott) 'And a team from Sheffield won the team competition – some friends of mine from south Yorkshire. 'One of the major parts of the day was that Dave's mum was there. His cousin, Neil, had brought her up and she presented the prizes, along with Dave's daughters, which was absolutely lovely.' Charities to benefit from the day included mental health charity Andy's Man Club, who were represented at the event, as well as the EDI work of United's Community Sports Trust, led by Teresa Mulholland. Mr Wilkes' mum and daughters presented raffle prizes (Image: Barbara Abbott) Advertisement 'I must say that the club supported the day well with some really good prizes, and it was great to see Marc Tierney and the community staff there,' Wadsworth added. Such was the success of the day, and the enduring memory of David Wilkes – who spent 27 years at Carlisle United – that it is now planned to be an annual event. 'That is our wish, and we will aim to build on the first one,' added Wadsworth. 'None of us had ever organised anything like this before. We will learn from the day as we move forward.' Fellow organiser Derek Walsh, from United's former players' association, also reflected on the day's success. Advertisement He said: 'Barbara Abbott, who took photographs on the day, said that it was a fantastic day with nothing rushed – a nice, gentle day, just the way David Wilkes was. 'I thought that was a lovely thing to say, and a really nice way of putting it. 'So many people and businesses were so generous with what they donated, and some people we invited for free – people we felt should be there – still paid, still gave donations. A host of former Carlisle United platers attended including, left to right, Jeff Thorpe, Darren Edmondson, Derek Walsh, Graham Anthony, Gareth McAlindon and Paul Murray (Image: Barbara Abbott) Advertisement 'We've got even more things still to auction off. A big, big thanks to Derek Mountfield. He brought us a replica Everton strip, signed by all the players who won the European Cup-Winners' Cup.' Other items up for grabs included an England shirt signed by head coach Thomas Tuchel. 'We must thank Carlisle United – a big thanks to [chief executive] Nigel Clibbens, they gave us a load of stuff.' 'A lot of people were there until quite late, a big group of old players sitting and chatting. Dave's family were there until well into the evening too,' added Walsh. 'It was a good day to remember Wilkesy. The only thing that was missing was him singing 'Piano Man'…'

Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers Already Bonding with New Teammates

New Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is already spending time with his new teammates off the field, as he took part in a charity golf outing for Steelers captain Cam Heyward on Monday. Heyward held his annual Irons for Impact golf outing at Sewickley Heights Golf Club on Monday, and many of the Steelers' stars were in attendance, including Rodgers, new wide receiver DK Metcalf, first-round pick Derrick Harmon and tight end Pat Freiermuth. Advertisement Some Steelers alumni, including Joey Porter Sr., Charlie Batch and Brett Keisel were also participating in the event. Rodgers and Metcalf were photographed riding in a cart together, as the Steelers' starting quarterback and top wide receiver continue to build the relationship that they started over the summer, when they worked out together in California. 'What a great dude who loves football and what a specimen this guy is,' Rodgers said in an April appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. 'I've had a few conversations with DK. I just think he's a super guy. … I wanted to see how I felt to throw with DK and how the juices felt and how the ball came out. It's all those little things and also just get to know DK. Like I said, that's a really good human being.' Advertisement Through The Heyward House, Cam Heyward has raised money and awareness for breast cancer awareness, helped fight illiteracy, childhood hunger, and has given back to those in need through the Craig's Closet program. Heyward was the 2024 winner of the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for his excellence both on the field and in the community. Heyward, Rodgers, Metcalf and the rest of the Steelers crew will get together on the field for the team's mandatory minicamp at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, starting on Tuesday. Noticeably absent from the trip to the links was Steelers All-Pro outside linebacker T.J. Watt. It remains to be seen whether he will continue his contract dispute with a hold-out over minicamp, or whether he'll attend but not participate, as he did in 2021. Mike Tindall shares breakfast date with 'motivational advisor' wife Zara - before they team up for charity golf event

Mike Tindall has given royal fans a sneak-peek at his breakfast date with his 'motivational advisor' and wife Zara Tindall before they teamed up for a charity golf event. Princess Anne 's daughter celebrated her 44th birthday on May 15, with the former rugby player marking the occasion with a sweet snap of the pair on Instagram. The photo showed Mike and Zara, who wed in 2011, lovingly gazing into each other's eyes at a celebrity golf tournament at The Belfry Hotel & Resort last year. He captioned the post: 'Happy Birthday to the better Tindall. She's even let me play golf on her birthday!' He was referring to this year's edition of the charity golf event in Sutton Coldfield, as Mike and Zara made their way to The Belfry for the Celebrity Golf Classic that typically coincides with the royal's birthday. On Friday, Mike shared a second photograph on Instagram that showed him and Zara at a diner, wearing sporty ensembles while enjoying a hearty breakfast of eggs, beans, and sausages. In his caption, Mike revealed his 'motivational advisor' Zara was giving him some 'final pieces of advice' before tee-off. While Zara and Mike were both wearing dark sport jackets, emblazoned with the logo of his charity event, the typically stylish royal finished her look with a pair of white shorts and matching sneakers. Meanwhile, Mike's printed golf shorts featured a bold print of peacock feathers in a sartorial choice that tickled his followers. He quickly followed his post up with a sweet snap of Mike and Zara on the golf course that appeared to have been taken after the 18th hole was played. Mike gushed 'one of us [is] more photogenic than the other' as he marked a 'picture perfect day at The Belfry' on the social media platform. Fans praised the 'down-to-earth' couple and wished Zara a belated happy birthday in the comments section, with one person writing: 'Elite sports mindset training there… you're a lucky man. Happy birthday, Zara!' Another said: 'Happy Birthday to Zara, hope you have a great game today & raise some money for the charities x' Referring to Mike's outfit, one user quipped: 'Was it…. You have the shorts babe now you go be a peacock!!??' 'Can't believe you're allowed those shorts,' another wrote. 'Lovely to see such a happy couple and down to earth.' It comes after the former Olympic equestrian shared a cheeky tale from the early days of her romance with Mike. Recalling a dinner date in 2003, Zara, who has no royal title, revealed their flirtation took an unexpectedly bold turn, as per The Sun. 'He asked me for a kiss,' she laughed. 'And I said, 'If you get naked, I'll give you a kiss.' 'So he got naked, I gave him a kiss, and then... well, anyway.' Zara, the daughter of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, recalled one night when Mike's partying got the better of him. 'He was so drunk he passed out and I had to leave him there,' she said. 'One of my mates had to come and pick him up. I can't move a 20-stone rugby player when he's out cold!' Zara and Mike's marriage has grown into a famously solid union. The couple, who wed in 2011, now share three children and regularly appear at both sporting and royal events. However, King Charles' niece initially thought the English athlete was a bit 'boring' after their first meeting at the Rugby World Cup in Sydney, Australia, in 2003. Mike responded to Zara's admission she found him 'boring' during an appearance on Good Morning Britain earlier today, when he told Kate Garraway and Adil Ray 'she's probably gone the other way on her thoughts'. 'No, I think the boring chat was the first time we met and I'd just been dropped from the Rugby World Cup semi-final so I probably really wasn't in the mood at that point. 'I would hope that I've made up for it and she's probably gone the other way on her first thoughts.' It comes after Zara took part in an equestrian trial last weekend, with her family gathered to show their support. Peter Phillips' daughters Savannah, 14, and Isla, 13, took selfies with their cousin Mia Tindall, 11 - who was on hand to cheer on her mother - as they took in the fifth and final day at the MARS Badminton Horse Trials on Sunday. Looking sporty and casual, Savannah opted for a slouchy quarter-zip with shorts, and wore her wavy hair down, while her sister Isla was trendy in a Von Dutch cap and grey top. Elsewhere, little Mia was adorable as ever in a chic white shirt and hat, teamed with a fun patterned skirt. The kids clearly enjoyed some girl time as they were spotted chatting up a storm in the stands. Their father Peter, 47 - who shares Savannah and Isla with his ex Autumn Kelly - looked after the royal cousins with his girlfriend Harriet Sperling, who looked summery and glam in a white and navy patterned dress. Meanwhile, Princess Anne's son looked ready for every weather in a pinstripe button-down, gilet and a cap - along with aviator shades. In one sweet father-daughter bonding moment, Isla could be seen huddling up to her dad for a cuddle. The family was out to support Zara, who looked to be in high spirits as she collected a revered accolade at the event. The mother-of-three beamed as she posed with other attendees in Gloucestershire. Radiating sporty casual, the daughter of Princess Anne dressed for the warmer weather in wide-leg jeans and a blue cropped jacket, adorned with golden buttons. She kept her blonde tresses out of her face with a ponytail, and looked excited to chat with others at event - even being snapped giggling at something. Keeping her look practical yet classy, the mother-of-three donned simple white trainers. For her make-up, Zara opted for a fresh-faced visage that accentuated her eyes, and kept accessories minimal.
