Newborn baby found abandoned by roadside in Kedah

Kuala Muda police chief Hanyan Ramlan said the baby was in a stable condition, with only minor scratches on the right eye and right side of the body. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : A newborn baby was found abandoned by the roadside at Taman Cempaka in Bukit Selambau, Kuala Muda, Kedah, yesterday morning. Police said the baby boy was found naked and placed on the gravel by the roadside, Bernama reported. Kuala Muda police chief Hanyan Ramlan said they received a call at 9.55am. 'A resident who was hanging clothes heard cries and began searching the area. She was shocked to discover the baby by the roadside. 'Neighbours who heard the woman's screams helped to move the baby to a safer spot before contacting the police,' he said in a statement. Hanyan said there were no surveillance cameras in the area. 'The baby was taken to the emergency department of Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani for an examination. 'A medical officer confirmed the baby was in a stable condition, with only minor scratches on the right eye and right side of the body,' he was quoted as saying. He said police are tracking down a 17-year-old teenager to assist in the investigation. 'A 19-year-old female, believed to be his partner, has been admitted to the hospital for further examination and treatment,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandonment of a child.

Montreal mom accused of child abandonment to remain behind bars, undergo psychiatric assessment

Police and rescue workers search the woods beside a highway for a missing three-year-old girl in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Que., Tuesday, June 17, 2025. (Christinne Muschi/The Canadian Press) A judge has ordered a Montreal mother charged with abandoning her three-year-old daughter on the side of a highway last month to remain in custody. The judge rendered the decision Friday morning at the Valleyfield courthouse and ordered the 34-year-old woman to undergo a psychiatric assessment within 30 days at the Philippe-Pinel Institute in Montreal. Wearing her hair down and a grey crewneck, she broke down in tears during the bail hearing after the judge issued the ruling. She had two guards with her. She will remain in custody pending her next court appearance on Aug. 8. The Crown prosecutor had requested that she not be released from jail. The mother was arrested June 16, one day after she walked into a store in Coteau-du-Lac, Que. telling workers that she had no memory of the whereabouts of her daughter for the past several hours. The toddler was missing for more than three days before being found alive — and alone — on the side of Highway 417 near St. Albert, Ont., by a police drone on June 18, following a massive search by more than 150 police officers in Quebec and Ontario. Following her arrest, the mother was charged with unlawful abandonment of a child. After appearing in court on July 3, she was charged with a second offence: criminal negligence causing bodily harm, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The name of the woman cannot be published in order to respect the privacy of the child, whose identity is protected by a publication ban. There is also a routine publication ban prohibiting any information relating to evidence presented at the bail hearing from being released. With files from CTV News' Olivia O'Malley.

Quebec mother accused of abandoning toddler testifies at bail hearing

The mother of a missing Quebec toddler who was found alive after a four-day search last month testified at her bail hearing on Friday. The mother, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban that protects the identity of her daughter, appeared in court wearing a grey sweatshirt with braided hair. She was handcuffed because she remains detained. A separate publication ban prevents the media from reporting the content of her testimony. Both the defence and prosecution questioned her. She testified for approximately one hour, sometimes wiping away tears as she spoke. Quebec Court Judge Bertrand St-Arnaud listened, occasionally interjecting, asking for clarification and taking notes. The bail hearing is scheduled to conclude on Friday. On Thursday, investigators testified. St-Arnaud is expected to present his decision on whether the mother can be released from detention next week. The mother has been charged with child abandonment and criminal negligence causing bodily harm, which carry maximum potential sentences of five and 10 years in prison, respectively. Crown prosecutor Lili Prévost-Gravel has said she remains opposed to the mother's release because it is not in the public interest. She has said the mother can receive care while in detention. The mother's lawyer, Olivier Béliveau, has said she needs help. The toddler went missing on June 15. Her mother reported her missing at a store in Coteau-du-Lac, about 50 kilometres west of Montreal, telling a store employee she didn't know where her daughter was. Three days later, a police drone spotted the girl in an Ontario field after an intensive search.
