'The Adventures of Fuzzy and Buzzy' Continue in New Children's Book About 'Speedy's Tree and the Disappearing Forest'
written by Josh Brandstadter; illustrated by Soraya Bartolome; on sale March 21, 2025 'Fuzzy and Buzzy are the perfect companions for literature-based science adventures. Their story captivated my first graders while engaging them in rich content. We can't wait for our next adventure!'— Stacy Wolfe, elementary school teacher RICHMOND, VA, UNITED STATES, July 3, 2025 / / -- Brandylane Publishers, Inc. of Richmond, Virginia, is excited to announce the release of a new children's book, ' The Adventures of Fuzzy and Buzzy: Speedy's Tree and the Disappearing Forest,' written by Josh Brandstadter and illustrated by Soraya Bartolome. Dynamic bear and bee duo Fuzzy and Buzzy are back in this second installment of their eponymous adventures—and this time, they're helping Speedy, a lightning-fast but forgetful squirrel who just can't seem to remember where he left the special tree where he keeps all his nuts and seeds. Together, Fuzzy, Buzzy, and Speedy search for Speedy's tree—only to discover that the forest surrounding it has been entirely felled by humans and their giant machines. While they mourn this part of the forest, Fuzzy and Buzzy nevertheless are determined to welcome Speedy into their own forest, and offer to help him move his nuts to their own beloved woods—while also combatting the destruction of the forest by planting some of them so that new trees can grow. Packed full of themes of teamwork, kindness, friendship, and environmentalism, including a section that tells young readers what they can do to help care for the planet—reusing and recycling paper, planting trees, and donating to organizations that help save forests—and paired with whimsical stylized artwork from Spanish artist Soraya Bartolome, 'The Adventures of Fuzzy and Buzzy: Speedy's Tree and the Disappearing Forest' released on March 21, 2025. 'Fresh off their first adventure, Fuzzy and Buzzy are enjoying their forest when something new catches their eyes. An excited visitor introduces them to a new threat, one which they have never seen before. The health and well-being of their home ecosystem is at risk, but with some collaboration and forward thinking, they come up with a solution which will benefit everything from the smallest seeds to the largest trees.' ‘Choose Your Own Evolution:' A Book Review
Now and then, a book comes along based on a premise so simple, yet so obviously genius, you can only wonder why you've never seen it before. So it is with Choose Your Own Evolution . Written by Jules Howard and illustrated by Gordy Wright, this book takes you from being a Dickinsonia, 570 million years ago, right up to… well… right up to wherever you want to go. In this book, YOU will choose your very own evolutionary pathway. This is a multiple-pathway adventure book with a difference. We're not slaying heroes here, and you don't have to roll any dice. Instead, after choosing one of several prompts, you will turn to different pages to discover new creatures. Each step through the book will take you forward in time to a new, more evolved organism. The book, while aimed at children, does not talk down to its reader. We start as a Dickinsonia, one of the Earth's first and simplest animals, and one, I must confess, I had never heard of. The entry for the Dicksonia tells you a little about the environment it (you) lived in and its (your) traits and features. It then outlines a situation you, as the Dickinsonian, find yourself in. You'll need to adapt, but what are you going to do? You're given 3 options to escape the danger. Try sea legs, slime, or show some backbone? Each option has a different page number. You pick one, and off you go to become either a Yicaris, a Helcionellid, or a Haikouichthys. Rinse and repeat, learning about different creatures, until you get to the end of your journey. (This feels like a good time to point out that the back of the book has a comprehensive glossary and a handy pronunciation guide!) How do these evolutionary journeys end? There are essentially two ways. You either become extinct (oh no!) or you become a survivor (yay!). There are significantly more survivors than extinctions, and you can become all manner of things, from an arachnid to a woodlouse. If you pick the right 9 choices, you might even end up a human, though my wife considers Emperor Penguin the ultimate victory! (My choice would be the Peacock Butterfly.) At the front of the book, before the multi-pathway fun begins, there is a handy guide to evolution, what it is, and how the theory was developed. At the back of the book, as well as the glossary and pronunciation guide, there is, perhaps best of all, a picture of the evolutionary tree used in the book. Very handy if you want to explore the links between the animals, or want to work your way backwards from human to Dickinsonia. It's a small thing, but the inclusion of this map makes the book all the better. It's hard to convey just how much I love this book. My boys are growing older now (19, 16, and 13) but I've found all of them nosing through it when I left it out on the table. There is something irresistible about the animals explored, and the temptation to see if you can end up as a T-Rex. (Which, worryingly, despite wanting to be a penguin, is where my wife ended up.) The book is suitable for children aged 8 or 9 upwards, younger with some help. The illustrations complement the text perfectly, and the text, with its conversational style, is highly informative but never overwhelming. I've been looking at these types of books for over a decade now, reviewing them for GeekDad but also using them with my children and in their school. This one, I think, is the best of the lot. A success story of publishing evolution, perhaps? Choose Your Own Evolution fires the imagination by challenging readers to forge different evolutionary pathways. As they read about the consequences of their decisions, they learn about the creatures they've become. The information transfer is effortless. The book offers engaging access to the science of natural selection and provides a great way for readers to immerse themselves in the processes of evolutionary biology. If you would like to pick up a copy of Choose Your Own Evolution, you can do so here in the UK. I was unable to find a US retailer for the book, but hopefully a US edition will be available soon. If you enjoyed this review, check out my other book reviews, here. I received a copy of this book in order to write this review. Liked it? Take a second to support GeekDad and GeekMom on Patreon!

Mother Nature's Letter Launches, Giving Children a Voice in the Climate Conversation
LEEDS, WEST YORKSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM, May 30, 2025 / / -- A new children's book is challenging the traditional narrative around climate education, not with fear, but with hope, beauty, and empowerment. Mother Nature's Letter by environmental educator and author Debbie Bartlett officially launches this week through Woodbridge Publishers, offering an inspiring call to action for children aged 6 to 8. As debate around the UK's countryside loss, climate instability, and environmental education intensifies, this timely release brings nature's voice directly to the young. Through lyrical prose and painterly illustrations, Mother Nature's Letter gently guides readers into some of today's most urgent ecological conversations, from vanishing green spaces to pollution and the importance of community action. 'Environmental awareness shouldn't wait until secondary school,' says author Debbie Bartlett. 'We need to begin early, and we need to begin gently. Children understand more than we give them credit for—they just need to be invited into the conversation.' In the story, Mother Nature awakens to find the Earth struggling; trees cut down, wildlife displaced, and rivers clogged with waste. Beside her, Papa Planet watches in sorrow. Together, they reach out to the one group often overlooked in climate solutions: children. The result is a poetic, metaphor-rich journey that celebrates the power of small voices and shared responsibility. What sets this book apart is its grounding in real-world action. Before publishing her first children's title, Debbie Bartlett founded Litter-Free Felixstowe, a grassroots organisation uniting schools, families, and local businesses in a shared mission to protect public spaces. Her efforts earned her Suffolk's Green Hero Award and the admiration of Sir David Attenborough, who personally called her to thank her for taking action. Now, through Mother Nature's Letter, Bartlett brings her experience into classrooms and homes, blending storytelling with social purpose. The book is already being praised by teachers for its curriculum relevance, encouraging letter-writing, environmental literacy, and active citizenship. It is also aligned with the values behind many school-wide eco initiatives and assemblies. 'Children are not just the inheritors of our environmental decisions,' Bartlett says. 'They are participants, right now, with the creativity and empathy to help change course.' 'Mother Nature's Letter' is now available for purchase via Amazon and major retailers.
