Starbucks reveals when it is bringing back the Pumpkin Spice Latte
Millions of people might be coping with extreme heat, but Starbucks is already getting ready for chilly fall temperatures with its most anticipated annual menu announcement. It could use the boost. The coffee chain revealed that its wildly popular Pumpkin Spice Latte beverage will return to menus on August 26 — four days later than last year's release date and the drink's latest arrival since 2022. However, this year's announcement marks the earliest date that Starbucks has provided a date for the Pumpkin Spice Latte's arrival. The PSL, as fans call it, is a best seller and could be a hit that Starbucks could use to help turn its business around. Starbucks has struggled over the past couple years with slumping sales and growing competition – to the point that the company brought in a new CEO who said Starbucks needed to 'fundamentally change our strategy.' Roughly 10% of Starbucks' overall sales come from seasonal staples, the chain revealed last year. Following the PSL's release last year, visits to Starbucks were more than 24% higher than a typical day and generated a 'sustained visit spike' that lasted several days after, according to a previous report, which tracks foot traffic. Typically, Starbucks announces the drink's arrival a few days before its release. But the company is giving a heads up a month earlier because Google searches for 'pumpkin spice' have started earlier this year, with an increase in interest beginning in mid-June rather than mid-July in 2024, it said. (Plus, the drink's arrival often leaks on Reddit long before Starbucks makes its official announcement). If fans can't wait, Starbucks said that its fall flavors are rolling out to grocery stores this week, including a PSL-inspired creamer and its autumn-themed as well as smoked butterscotch-flavored coffees. A canned PSL coffee drink will be released in early August. Former Chipotle leader Brian Niccol became Starbucks' CEO last September and has instituted a number of other changes. He's tweaked employee uniforms, overhauled the menu by cutting 30% of its offerings and is testing a new café design that encourages paying customers to linger. Since its 2003 launch, the PSL has taken on a life of its own, becoming a signal for fall both beloved and mocked and ushering in an era of pumpkin spice products, from trash bags to yogurt and even whiskey.

Starbucks tells corporate staff in US and Canada to work in office at least four days a week
Starbucks has ordered its corporate staff to work from the office at least four days a week from late September and is offering cash payments to those who choose to quit instead. Brian Niccol, the chief executive of the Seattle-headquartered coffee chain, said many of its employees would be required to work in the office for a minimum of four days a week, up from three, from Monday to Thursday. The edict will apply to its Seattle and Toronto support centres and its regional offices in North America. The change does not apply to the UK, where Starbucks has its head office in Chiswick, west London. 'We do our best work when we're together,' Niccol said in a message to employees, referred to as 'partners', on the company's website about 're-establishing an in-office culture'. 'We want leaders and people managers to be physically present with their teams.' He added: 'Being in-person also helps us build and strengthen our culture. As we work to turn the business around, all these things matter more than ever.' Starbucks has 16,000 corporate support employees worldwide, including coffee roasters and warehouse staff. It employs about 360,000 people worldwide, including 5,600 in the UK, most of whom work in its cafes. The four-day office policy will come into effect on 29 September. Niccol, who has been in the job for almost a year, has said he wants to take Starbucks back to its coffeehouse roots by improving customers' experience in its cafes and reducing reliance on mobile and takeaway orders. He said: 'We know we're asking a lot of every partner as we work to turn the business around. And we understand that the updated in-office culture may not work for everyone. 'To support those who decide to 'opt out', we're offering a one-time voluntary exit programme with a cash payment for partners who make this choice.' The company did not state the size of the sum. On Tuesday, a survey showed that a fear of having to return to their office desks is having an impact on workers' wellbeing. In February, Starbucks asked its vice-presidents who were working remotely to move to Seattle or Toronto. It is now extending this requirement to all support centre 'people leaders', who are expected to relocate within 12 months. In its previous announcement, Starbucks set out plans to lay off 1,100 corporate employees and close several hundred open or vacant job positions, the biggest job cuts in its history, in order to reduce costs as it struggled with rising inflation and economic uncertainty. Niccol faced environmental criticism last year for his 1,000-mile commute to work in the office three days a week. The company allowed him to travel in from his home in Newport Beach, California, to its head office in Seattle via a private jet instead of relocating. Since then, he has bought a home in Seattle and is frequently seen at the company's headquarters, a spokesperson told Associated Press.

Starbucks reveals secret menu
Starbucks has finally pulled back the curtain on its new secret menu. The drinks giant unveiled four new drinks on Monday, freshening up its summer offerings. The drinks, which until now had remained a carefully guarded secret, are available on the Starbucks app's 'offers' tab. Starbucks lovers will be delighted that the four drink slots will rotate with new customizations throughout the season, the coffee chain confirmed. The first four new menu items include a blended Refresher, iced tea with popping pearls, cookie crumble-topped coffee, and a chocolate shaken espresso. The cookie crumble selection is a cold brew with two pumps of vanilla syrup, topped with Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam and cookie crumbles. The new shaken espresso includes two pumps of white chocolate mocha sauce to an Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso. The drink is then topped off with Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam. The latest Refresher flavor is Mango Dragonfruit Lemonade with peach juice, also topped with Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam. Finally, fans can get their hands on a blend of black tea and lemonade accompanied by raspberry popping pearls. The secret menu is inspired by customers' own concoctions and fans are encouraged to submit their own customizations. If their beverage combination is selected for inclusion in the secret menu, they will be rewarded with a cash prize. The next round of submissions is now open until July 20. Finalists will receive a $5,000 cash prize and their creations will be available on the secret menu from August 18 to August 25. After consumers have had a chance to trial all the secret menu drinks, a final vote will take place for the best drink. This overall winner will claim a $25,000 grand prize. Starbucks recently announced its biggest hiring spree in history with plans to add 85,000 workers across its 17,000 US locations. The new hires will be expected to support Starbucks' efforts to bring back a more personal touch — including a new policy asking baristas to handwrite notes on customers' cups.
