Illinois football's Luke Altmyer reveals why he spurned return to SEC
The post Illinois football's Luke Altmyer reveals why he spurned return to SEC appeared first on ClutchPoints. This offseason, a bomb went off in the college football world when quarterback Nico Iamaleava left the Tennessee Volunteers over an NIL dispute. It was significant because it was the first dispute surrounding NIL. When it happened, rumors started swirling about who the Volunteers would potentially grab out of the Transfer Portal. One of the biggest names on the radar was Illinois football quarterback Luke Altmyer. Advertisement Altmyer started his career in the SEC at Ole Miss but transferred to Illinois and has resurrected his career in his two seasons with the Fighting Illini. Brett Bielema gave him the keys to the offense and led Illinois to its first 10-win season since 2001. Due to their success, Bielema also signed a recent contract extension. On3 interviewed him, and the spring transfer topic came up. You can infer that he never outright said that it was Tennessee. He said, 'There were opportunities for me to venture onward to the next level, but also to be able to play in another program. That's just the reality, the NCAA and the college football world we live in. 'Being from Mississippi and in SEC country, it's desirable to play in that conference, in front of people I know, and in stadiums I've been in before and grew up watching and loving. It was certainly an attraction and a real thing. Advertisement 'It was a difficult decision, but I know what's important. I know what is being created here, and the trust, unity, and connection I have amongst my teammates, this community, and my coaches. The success is waiting for me here. It'd be foolish to pick up and start over and take a risk when I have a lot of trust that's been earned and built.' Illinois football has a chance for a historic season Illinois has a chance to make history this season. Altmyer is sticking with the Fighting Illini to try to make it to the College Football Playoff and have an opportunity to compete for a Big Ten title. Still, Altmyer did not miss the opportunity to have some fun, and 10 days after Iamaleava left Tennessee, Altmyer posted a GIF of him making a 'championship belt' celebration with the message: 'Keep the Champaign Flowing.' This made it very clear that he was staying with the Fighting Illini. Illinois went 5-7 in Altmyer's first season in 2023, but in 2024, they underwent a massive turnaround and finished 10-3, one of the biggest turnarounds in college football last season. They have an opportunity to make history this year, and it became very clear Altmeyer did not want to miss out on that.

Bret Bielema calls out Kirby Smart, Georgia for tampering
The post Bret Bielema calls out Kirby Smart, Georgia for tampering appeared first on ClutchPoints. When a college football player receives communication from another team about playing for said team before the player has entered the transfer portal, it is called tampering. Tampering is a big problem in college sports, and it is against the rules. However, it's abundantly clear that it happens all the time, and there are rarely any punishments for it. For example, Illinois football head coach Bret Bielema is pretty confident that Kirby Smart and Georgia tampered with his running back Josh McCray. Advertisement Josh McCray was one of the best players on the Illinois football team last season, but he now resides in Athens, Georgia. He entered the transfer portal this past offseason, and it didn't take him very long to land with the Bulldogs. 'We did lose a guy to Georgia,' Bielema said during a recent episode of The Triple Option. 'Somehow, he found his way to the portal and 12 hours after being in the portal, he was on a flight to Georgia. I don't know how that happened, but it's crazy. Wish Josh all the best. He took advantage of that opportunity.' McCray had over 600 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns last season for the Fighting Illini. Losing him hurts, but Bielema has a lot of confidence in this year's running back room. It reminds him of a special one that he had back in the day at Wisconsin. 'I'm very excited,' Bielema said. 'We had three guys last year that are coming back to us that are very special. And it's kind of like what I had when I was at Wisco. I had a roster one year John Clay was a fifth-rounder to Pittsburgh, big 260-pound bruiser, just a workout (warrior). Behind him was a guy by the name Montee Ball, ended up being a second-round pick to the Denver Broncos.' Advertisement Just those players would make for an incredibly stacked RB room, but Bielema wasn't finished. 'Then behind him was this young guy named James White, who was the Freshman Big Ten Player of the Year,' he continued. 'Then there was this other guy, Melvin Gordon, who became a first-rounder. Those four guys were on one roster. All four of them were just a little bit different, and that's kind of what I've got going now.' Tampering is a huge problem in college football, and Bret Bielema thinks that his team was a victim of it this offseason. However, the Illinois football team is going with a next man up mentality, and Bielema is confident that the Fighting Illini will be successful at the RB position. Texas Trending for Several More Five-Star Recruits in 2026 Class
Texas Trending for Several More Five-Star Recruits in 2026 Class originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Texas Longhorns made a splash on the recruiting trail last weekend. The Longhorns hosted a few big recruiting weekends throughout the month of June and the early returns from the visits were overwhelmingly positive. Steve Sarkisian's staff earned the commitments of four-star defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland and five-star edge Richard Wesley last weekend and more could be on the way. Advertisement According to On3's Steve Wiltfong, Texas is trending the right direction for several blue-chip recruits in the 2026 class. Five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo and four-star interior offensive lineman John Turntine are both expected to land in Austin. Turntine is the No. 1 interior offensive lineman in the country per On3's industry ranking. © Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Texas is also emerging as the favorite for a few top defensive recruits. Wiltfong lists four-star edge Trenton Henderson, four-star defensive lineman Kendall Guervil, four-star edge Jamarion Carlton and four-star linebacker Kosi Okpala as players that the Longhorns appear to be in good standing with. One of Texas' priority targets, five-star linebacker/edge Xavier Griffin, appears to be leaning toward Alabama but Sarkisian's staff is pushing hard to land the Georgia native ahead of his June 29 commitment date. Advertisement The Longhorns currently have the No. 10 overall class for the 2026 cycle. If Texas can land a few more five-star players, its possible Sarkisian could bring in back-to-back No. 1 classes. Georgia's Future Star QB Pushing Projected $355,000 Playmaker to Join Dawgs
Georgia's Future Star QB Pushing Projected $355,000 Playmaker to Join Dawgs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Georgia Bulldogs landed 2026 four-star wide receiver Craig Dandridge on the recruiting trail Thursday. But the Bulldogs may not be done adding star playmakers. Advertisement Bulldogs five-star quarterback commit Jared Curtis is hoping Georgia can land yet another highly touted receiver. On3's Steve Wiltfong reported Friday that Curtis is taking matters into his own hands to ensure that happens. "Nashville (Tenn.) Christian five-star quarterback Jared Curtis is the top-ranked prospect competing at the [Overtime OT7 Playoffs] checking in as the nation's No. 2 overall prospect and No. 1 signal-caller," Wiltfong wrote. "He's playing for the Overtime RWE Team and he talked future Georgia teammate Lincoln Keyes to fly down and play with him. Those two will continue to build on the chemistry already formed. "Curtis is doing his part to help recruit another one of his teammates at the event in five-star receiver Cederian Morgan." Georgia Bulldogs five-star quarterback commit Jared Curtis.© Mark Zaleski / The Tennessean / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Morgan explained he and the quarterback have built strong chemistry together. Advertisement 'We've got a great connection and I feel like if I go there I have a quarterback that's going to get me the ball,' Morgan told Wiltfong. Morgan is the No. 2 receiver and top Alabama prospect in the 2026 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. The receiver is also rated the No. 12 overall recruit in the class. On3 projected Morgan's NIL value to be $355,000. It may be difficult, though, for the Bulldogs to poach Morgan from his home state. The 247Sports crystal ball predicted the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers as the favorites to land Morgan. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine also had Alabama and Auburn as the top two candidates for Morgan. Based on the On3 RPM, Georgia has under a 1% chance of landing the five-star wideout.
