Two suspects at large after robbing East Baltimore community center Friday
A couple is lucky to be alive after two suspects shot at them during an armed robbery at their East Baltimore community center on Friday morning. Clayton Guyton says he and his wife, Diana, have been helping troubled youth for more than 30 years. That's what they were doing at the Rose Street Community Center when two armed suspects intruded, demanding money. "I'm very thankful that her life was spared by the almighty God," Guyton said. Rose Street Community Center robbery Diana, Guyton's wife, was inside the Rose Street Community Center, located at 800 North Rose Street, around 9:30 a.m. when two armed suspects burst in. "They were talking about 'Where's the money!' And I looked and I leaned forward, trying to get my bag off the floor, and he shot it off," Diana recalled from her harrowing encounter. While the bullet narrowly missed Diana, the intruders grabbed her bag and ran outside, where Clayton was sitting in his truck. "They fired at me twice," Guyton told WJZ's Caroline Foreback. Identities Sought In reference to an armed commercial robbery that occurred on June 27, 2025, at approximately 9:48 a.m., in the 800 block of North Rose Street, detectives need your help in identifying the individuals seen in this video. Anyone knowing the identity of these… — Baltimore Police (@BaltimorePolice) June 27, 2025 Shaken up, but not giving up Though the incident struck a chord, the couple says it would take a lot more than that for them to give up on Baltimore's youth. The Rose Street Community Center is where Clayton and his family help young people transitioning out of the juvenile justice system find a better path. "Two misguided youth that decided to - instead of work for the money – they decided to take the money," he explained. "Especially if they frequent the center…why would you bite the hand that feeds you?" The couple was left shaken up…even angry – but they're also forgiving. "What was the motivation behind them feeling like they had to be extreme?" he asked. Clayton says they want Diana's purse back, they want the suspects arrested, and after they're held accountable, he hopes they get help. "The burning question is, are we going to continue working with youth? Because some people in the community are suggesting that we don't," he said. The answer is yes. "Who more can say don't give up on the young people when you had two shots fired at you today and one shot fired at your wife, who you would die for," he said. "Do not give up on our youth." Detectives are working to identify the suspects. Anyone who recognizes them or has information about this incident is urged to contact Baltimore police.

Tri-Counties Community Center in Marysville welcomes new senior program as repairs still loom
A new seniors program has found a temporary home at the Tri-Counties Community Center in Marysville, despite the center still reeling from storm damage from earlier this year. The program is called Seniors on the Go. "Our community was built by the people aging in it. They're longtime taxpayers, longtime residents. They're the people and the culture we don't want to slip away from Yuba County," said Yuba County District 2 Supervisor Renick House. The chair for the Yuba County Commission on Aging started a Seniors on the Go program up in the foothills roughly three years ago. After tremendous success and a lot of interest, the program is expanding to Marysville, with a yes vote by the board of supervisors. The foothills program isn't eligible for county funding because it's a nonprofit, but the new Marysville program is a different story. "I realized there were a lot of seniors with no place to go and lots of isolation," said the founder of Seniors on the Go Yuba Foothills and chair of Yuba County Commission on Aging, Margaret Fowler. "We were pleased they supported us with the now-approved funding." Yuba County's health and human services department recognized the need and is now in a contract with the Tri-Counties Community Center for Seniors to attend workshops and socialize a couple of days per week, along with a monthly luncheon, all at no cost. "This program will include enrichment activities for our senior population. We haven't had something like this in a long time, just having something consistent and available," said Deputy Director for the Yuba County Health and Human Services Department Jessica Garcia. "I am a senior and I like to stay active, I like to stay involved in my community, and I think that all the other seniors feel that way. They just don't know what to do," said Seniors on the Go Marysville Project Lead Peggy Dehhan. She's also the former executive director of the Tri-Counties Community Center. Now, seniors will have a place to go. At least for the next year, but storm damage to the community center is continuing to pose problems. "We have a lot of water damage we need to clean up and repair from the walls to the ceilings to the joints. It hit us really bad," said Dehaan. The community center is still looking for funding to make permanent repairs so programs like seniors on the go, kids crafts, the roller rink and much more can exist. "We don't want to lose any of that. It's really important we band together and work together and make this facility shine," House said. The next seniors on the go event will be July 16 at the community center. Yuba County said once the Marysville program gets going, they will be working to expand it even further to underserved communities like Linda and Olivehurst.

Goderich Memorial Arena, likely to reopen, but not as arena
Safety and accessibility concerns prompted the closure of Goderich's famed Memorial Arena this January. But there's new hope that it will reopen. 'I'm hopeful that you will see the Memorial Arena not as an arena, but as a community center moving forward in our community down the road,' said Goderich's Mayor Trevor Bazinet. 061625 - Memorial Arena Goderich Mayor, Trevor Bazinet, standing in downtown Goderich as seen in June 2025. (Scott Miller/CTV News London) A consultant's report following extensive public input is recommending reopening Goderich's Memorial Arena as a multi-purpose facility. It will possibly be home to things like shuffleboard, basketball and indoor soccer, along with a community meeting and event space. The initial price tag to reopen the facility is estimated to about $90,000. The price tag for a full repurposing of the former arena into a community centre is somewhere between $11 and $14 million. 'It's a very difficult subject for everyone in town to confront. I love this old girl, everybody does. But we have to make financial decisions that are fiscally responsible,' said Goderich resident Steve Buchanan. 061625 - Memorial Arena Goderich resident, Steve Buchanan speaking outside the Goderich Memorial Arena. (Scott Miller/CTV News London) Buchanan would love to see the 75-year-old facility saved, but it can't come at any price, he contends. 'Just half of that 14 million bucks over a five year period would require about 178 bucks per citizens of Town of Goderich to finance just half of the 14 million bucks,' he said. Bazinet said while Goderich council has not made a decision on the exact future of the town's Memorial Arena that had been operating as a community centre since the ice was removed in 2018, he believes repurposing the existing structure sounds like the good plan. 061625 - Memorial Arena Goderich's Memorial Arena, currently closed, due to 'safety and accessibility concerns." (Scott Miller/CTV News London) 'We're not going to build something new. The structure of the current facility right now is fine. So, we're going to continue on with that facility. There's a lot of emotional attachment with that facility in the community. Can we change some things? Definitely. There's a comprehensive plan that was provided a lot of amazing things that we can consider,' said Bazinet. Buchanan believes if the repurposing plan becomes too expensive, demolishing the old arena is the next best option. 061625 - Memorial Arena Possibly layouts for repurposed Goderich Memorial Arena. (Source: GSP Group/Town of Goderich) 'If we can't do that, then let's turn it into housing. It's a perfect spot in this neighborhood. Perfect place for housing. Overlooks a park. The province right now is in a position to help municipalities out to build more housing. So that's the thing to do. But for God's sakes, make a decision and stop spending money we don't have,' he said. Bazinet said Goderich council is currently waiting to hear back from numerous service clubs. They've expressed interest in possibly raising funds towards a refurbished and repurposed facility before making a final decision on the future of the old Memorial Arena. 'I think it's important to work with our service clubs. They're the ones that are going to be using the facility quite a bit. And if we can form some type of partnership with them, then I think it's a win win for everybody,' said Bazinet.
