Arizona man's HOA keeps fining him $100 for giving out water in heat — lawyer for HOA explains. Do you agree?
David Martin of Goodyear, Arizona, says he just wanted to help his neighbors stay hydrated during triple-digit temperatures — but now he's being fined for it by his homeowners association. Martin has been placing a cooler filled with free bottled water near the sidewalk outside his home since May of 2020. 'It's for the kids, the delivery drivers, the couple holding hands walking down the street,' Martin told local outlet KPHO. 'It's for the little kid who has to walk his dog in the heat.' In 2022, the Canyon Trails HOA and its management company FirstService Residential, gave him a warning for his cooler, but then followed up with an apology letter. "At that point, I thought it was over and done, and we wouldn't have any problems ever again until May of this year," Martin shared with local outlet KYMA in 2024. Then in May of 2024 he received his first fine for $50, eventually escalating to multiple citations for $100. Ever since then Martins has been receiving fines of $100 whenever he puts out his cooler when it gets hot out. He claims the fines are unfair — and dangerous — in a state where heat has already killed dozens this year. 'Here we are in July, the hottest day of the year, and we are still talking about a water cooler with free cold water,' Martin said. 'It's ridiculous that they are adding violations to a total that's not going to get paid, because I'm giving out free water.' An attorney for the Canyon Trails HOA released a statement to KPHO last year saying: "The association does not object to a resident providing free water bottles to the community; however, the community's rules do not allow a resident to advertise water bottle distribution from a portable ice chest, located next to their garage that is visible from neighboring property." After months of mounting fines, Martin launched a petition to recall three HOA board members. He claims it received over 100 signatures. According to 12News, a special meeting was held on Thursday Jul. 10 where 190 out of 210 votes cast supported removing the board members. But the fight wasn't over. The HOA's board held an emergency meeting Friday Jul. 11, voiding the results — claiming the petition didn't meet signature requirements and questioning whether the 210 votes reflected a quorum for a community of more than 1,000 homes. Martin provided documentation to 12News showing FirstService Residential's own legal counsel had allegedly verified that the petition met the requirements under state law. He says he's preparing for a legal battle. 'I am hoping with three new board members that get elected, they'll see that wasting time and money on a water cooler that's helping the community is just that: a waste,' Martin told KPHO. While Martin's gesture is generous, it highlights a bigger issue: HOAs typically enforce community rules strictly — even when they clash with common sense. If you're part of an HOA community: Check your CCRs (covenants, conditions and restrictions) before placing anything in shared spaces. Document your intent if you're doing something for health or safety reasons. Reach out to your board for clarification or exceptions — especially in emergencies. If you receive a violation notice, address it immediately and document everything in writing. If mediation fails, seek legal advice to understand your rights and options. On Reddit, where the story has gone viral, many sided with Martin. One user wrote "HOAs really deserve every ounce of disdain they receive. The gall to punish someone for having compassion, and providing water in an organized manner on their personal property." This article provides information only and should not be construed as advice. Aussie reality TV star issues desperate plea after home is ransacked and graffitied with chilling message
Love Island Australia star Lexy Thornberry has issued a plea for help after her brand new home in Queensland was ransacked and graffitied by a group of local teenagers. The 24-year-old, who lives in Gatton with her professional boxer fiancé David Nyika, was left shaken after she arrived home at the weekend to find holes in her walls and the bedrooms trashed. The living room had been graffitied with a brazen warning: 'Ethan was here,' and 'Hunter was here.' Lexy turned to social media for help after the distressing incident. 'Gatton locals, swipe up if you know the teenagers who broke into our house a few days ago,' she wrote alongside several photos of the incident. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Very upsetting...' Lexy wrote as she photographed some of the damage. Lexy said that her neighbours had seen six teenagers on bicycles hanging around her property on the day of the incident. 'Keep a close eye on your kids please,' she added, before asking locals to help her identify the perpetrators. Gatton is a small town in the Lockyer Valley Region of Queensland, with a population of less than 8,000. Making matters worse, Lexi and her NZ-born fiancé appear to have only recently purchased the property. In a carousel of photos that Lexi posted to social media last week, the happy couple posed together in front of a Gatton Real Estate 'Sold' sign and proudly held up the keys to their first home. 'Your Home. Our community,' the slogan on the real estate sign reads. Lexy and David are also recently engaged, after the Kiwi boxer got down on one knee during a holiday to Mexico. David popped the question with a Tiffany ring at sunset in the Isla Mujeres. 'It's easy with Lexy. I spent almost eight years with the wrong people, I wanted to nail this one,' he told Woman's Day. Although the Kiwi boxer moved from England to Australia to train with Lexy's father and boxing trainer Noel Thornberry in 2022, it was the former Love Islander that made the first move. After watching David win bronze in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, she slid into his Instagram DMs. And as fate would have it, David soon moved to Queensland to train with her dad on the family farm the following year.

Teens hailed as heroes after dramatic rescue of baby from car crash wreckage
This is the moment a group of heroic youngsters jumped into action to pull a young couple and a baby from a car after it flipped onto its side. A photograph taken by a witness shows one of the rescuers on top of the vehicle after it crashed in Sturry Road, Canterbury, Kent. Also pictured are a man and his 11-month-old son, who had been dragged from the wreckage by those who rushed to help. The baby's mother, still trapped inside at the time, was soon helped out through a passenger-side window. Robert Winstanley took the picture as he was walking to a supermarket at about 5pm yesterday. He said: 'Just as I was coming to the Esso garage, I saw all of these youngsters, about 100 yards away, rush into the road. 'As I got closer, I could see a car had flipped onto its side, and some of them were standing on the roof trying to reach those trapped inside.' Mr Winstanley says the group - believed to be aged in their late teens - pulled the father and baby from the car before rescuing the mother. He added: 'I spoke to her while they were waiting for an ambulance to arrive. 'She was understandably in shock and crying, but they were all unhurt.' Mr Winstanley described those who stepped in to help as 'heroes' who had put themselves at risk. He said: 'It was really heartening to see, especially given what is often said about young people. 'The car could have turned into a fireball at any minute. 'After everyone was out of the vehicle, they were all shaking each other's hands and high-fiving each other.' An off-duty police officer managed traffic until emergency crews arrived. The road was blocked in both directions while the scene was made safe and the vehicle was recovered.
