Jack Kleinsinger, Impresario Behind a Marathon Jazz Series, Dies at 88

Jack Kleinsinger, a lawyer by day who in his evening hours indulged his passion for music by creating and running Highlights in Jazz, one of New York's longest-running concert series, for which he arranged and hosted more than 300 shows over a 50-year run, died on June 11 at his home in Manhattan. He was 88. His cousin, Elizabeth Elliot, said the cause was complications of a fall. Mr. Kleinsinger spent 30 years as a government lawyer, first for New York City and then, from 1970 to 1991, as an assistant attorney general for the State of New York. But his real life began after he punched out every afternoon. Seven times a year, he presented Highlights in Jazz, a roaming concert series that featured some of the country's best musicians playing alongside a host of promising young artists. Beginning in 1973, at a time when interest in jazz was at its ebb and nightclubs were shutting down, Mr. Kleinsinger nonetheless drew packed crowds. His shows often sold out; any tickets he didn't sell, he donated to performing-arts high schools around the city. He could count on a core audience of about 350, many of whom took pride in attending virtually every one of his shows. He built on that base with a mailing list of 5,000, which he curated by hand. Mad for it: More tickets on the way for Edinburgh Oasis gigs

Thousands more tickets could be put on sale for the Oasis gigs at Edinburgh's Murrayfield have been given the green light to increase the venue's temporary capacity from 67,130 to 69,990 for each of the three sold-out shows in August. The band has told fans a final release of tickets for the band's reunion gigs around the UK could happen in the coming days. The news comes weeks after frontman Liam Gallagher hit out at council officials in Edinburgh after the band's fans were described in unflattering terms in a safety briefing. Oasis will play three nights at Murrayfield, the home of Scottish rugby, on the weekend of 8 and 9 August, and on Tuesday 12 August, as part of their reunion will mark the first time they will play in the city since City of Edinburgh Council said its licencing committee approved the capacity increase after consultation with the police and public safety were no public objections to the application. Will the extra tickets for Oasis be standing or seating? The application for the increased capacity said it consisted of existing seating which now had clear sight lines of the stage due to the configuration of equipment for the means promoters will, in theory, be able to sell up to 8,580 extra tickets across the three sold-out Louise Young, convener of the council's licensing board, said: "An application to increase the capacity at Murrayfield for the upcoming Oasis concerts was approved by the licensing board on 23 June. "This decision followed consultation with the police and public safety officers."Councillors have approved similar capacity increase requests for Murrayfield in the past. Officials say the capacity increase for Oasis is smaller than what was approved for a series of Taylor Swift concerts last year. Concerns have previously been raised about holding the Oasis concerts in Edinburgh at the same time as the city's arts festival venues are blaming the impact of the gigs on slower than usual ticket sales.A safety advisory group meeting from October last year also raised some concerns about the shows. The group involved the council, promoters DF Concerts, security firm G4S, Police Scotland, the Scottish Ambulance Service and transport providers including Lothian Buses, Edinburgh Trams and of the meeting show a number of concerns were raised including the conduct of fans and "the tone of the band".It also said the estimated 70,000 crowd could feature a number of "middle-aged men," stating they "take up more room" and suggested promoters to consider this when "working out occupancy".In response, Liam Gallagher said the council's "attitude stinks". In a post on X, he added: "I'd love to see a picture of all the people on the Edinburgh council bet there's some real stunning individuals."

German prosecutors indict alleged helper in plot to attack Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna

(AP Photo/Heinz-Peter Bader, File) BERLIN — German prosecutors on Friday announced charges against a suspect accused of supporting a foiled plot last year to attack Taylor Swift concerts in neighbouring Austria. Three Swift concerts in Vienna were cancelled in early August when the plot was discovered, and Austrian authorities made three arrests. The indictment in Germany against a young Syrian national, identified only as Mohammad A. in line with German privacy rules, was filed at a Berlin court earlier this month. Federal prosecutors said in a statement that he is accused of supporting a foreign terrorist organization and preparing a serious act of violence. Prosecutors said that the suspect supported the ideology of the Islamic State group and that, between mid-July and August last year, he was in contact with a young man in Austria who planned to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. He allegedly helped by translating bomb-building instructions from Arabic and organizing online contact with an IS member abroad, among other things. The suspect also allegedly gave his acquaintance in Austria the text for an oath of allegiance to IS, which the latter used to join the group. He is not in custody, prosecutors said. The court must now decide whether to bring the case to trial and when. The Associated Press

Bristol amphitheatre 'best location for live music'

Bristol Sounds, the annual concert series on the city's harbourside, has begun with performances from Supergrass and Kaiser Chiefs. The series of open-air concerts at the Lloyds Amphitheatre will continue with Texas on Friday before The Fratellis headline on Saturday and Olly Murs brings the series to a close on Sunday. Organisers say they expect about 22,000 people to attend the events over the course of the week. Connor Cupples, promoter at Crosstown Concerts and Bristol Sounds, said: "There's nothing better than being back at Bristol Sounds with the waterfront packed for live music." Mr Cupples said: "Supergrass' 30th album anniversary was the perfect start on Wednesday and the atmosphere was incredible." With the final shows likely to sell out, he said "as if we needed more proof that the amphitheatre is the best location for live music in the city". Follow BBC Bristol on Facebook, X and Instagram.
