Japan aims to complete Yonaguni evacuation shelter in 2028

The central government has said that the construction of an evacuation shelter on the country's westernmost island of Yonaguni, in Okinawa Prefecture, will start next fiscal year, with the completion expected around spring 2028. The schedule was included in a progress report released Friday that details the construction of such shelters in five municipalities covering Okinawa's Sakishima Islands, including Yonaguni. Japan started the project bearing in mind a possible emergency over Taiwan in the Nansei southwestern island region, which includes the Sakishima chain and stretches from Kagoshima Prefecture to Okinawa. Underground shelters will be built in the five municipalities to accommodate local residents for about two weeks in the event of an invasion or a missile attack. The town of Yonaguni will build a shelter on the underground level of a new town office complex that will be capable of holding about 200 people. The city of Miyakojima plans to start the construction of its shelter this winter, while the city of Ishigaki aims to begin such work as early as fiscal 2026. Each facility will have a capacity of about 500 people. The town of Taketomi and the village of Tarama hope to draw up detailed designs for their shelters as early as next fiscal year.

Construction training program propels Clayton County students into career opportunities

Friday was graduation day in Clayton County, and the diplomas came with a bonus. Thaddeus Brown told Channel 2's Berndt Petersen he liked the math. 'At least 45 to 47, to 120, and maybe 200,000,' Brown said. That's dollars, salaries for qualified construction professionals who got trained by the metro Atlanta nonprofit Construction Ready. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Most of the 19 graduates just finished high school, then successfully completed the nonprofit's intense four-week pre-apprenticeship program at Clayton Schools' Perry Career Academy. 'This is for students who aren't going to college or into the military. This is another option for them to get into our industry very quickly and make a lot of money and have a long-term career in construction,' the nonprofit's CEO Scott Shelar said. 'It has been amazing in terms of the lives we have impacted through this partnership,' Principal Terry Young said. The graduates have already had interviews with local construction companies. They're prepared to report to a job site today, and some are thinking big about tomorrow. 'I will start my own business in construction,' graduate Sanna Brown Tucker said. Brown said he can't wait to get to work. 'The more you're willing to learn, the farther you will go,' Brown said. Industry experts say 7,000 construction jobs are currently unfilled in Georgia. South Washington Street down to two lanes at 28th Avenue South beginning June 30

Jun. 27—GRAND FORKS — South Washington Street will see lane closures at 28th Avenue South beginning June 30. The project will focus on turn lane work. The lane closures are expected to last through July 6. During construction, Washington Street will be down to one lane in each direction and traffic on 28th Avenue will only be able to make right turns at the intersection. Northbound Washington Street traffic will return to normal beginning July 6 but but southbound traffic impacts will continue past July 6. The North Dakota Department of Transportation is leading the project and will extend the left turn lanes to allow for additional queueing space. NDDOT will also do concrete panel replacement. The project will cost $209,965, with the city of Grand Forks spending roughly $15,400. The rest of the funds come from state and federal funding sources.

Fake IPT solar tender leaves Terengganu trader almost RM1m in the red

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — A trader in Terengganu has lost RM932,300 after allegedly falling victim to a scam syndicate involving a fake tender to supply solar power generator equipment to a non-existent of higher learning institution. According to Kosmo!, the 52-year-old man lodged a police report at the Kuala Terengganu District Police Headquarters last night after realising he had been duped. Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the owner of a construction and supply company was first contacted by a suspect — claiming to be a representative of a state-owned institution — via WhatsApp on May 28. 'The victim was offered what was claimed to be a closed tender to supply and deliver Eco Flow portable power generators to the institution. 'Interested, he sent over his company's details to the suspect,' Azli told Kosmo! today. Azli said the trader subsequently made eight transactions into two bank accounts provided by the suspect, using both company funds and his personal savings. 'He was shocked to discover it was a scam after checking with the institution's management in Kemaman, who confirmed that no such tender had ever existed,' he added. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Tech University officials are pointing to the progress being made on its new agriculture building. Officials stated that the concrete pad for the building was poured on Thursday, and the building is scheduled to be erected in early July. Interior finish and equipment installation will follow. Arkansas Tech celebrates topping out of Ferguson Student Union The 3,300-square-foot Farm Credit Agriculture Building will house welding equipment, a tool storage area, classroom space, laboratory space, and other equipment used by the ATU agriculture program. It is scheduled to open in late 2025, officials said. University officials said Farm Credit, Arkansas Farm Bureau, Greenway Equipment, Arvest Bank and Union Bank are among the financial contributors making the construction project possible. Mobley Concrete donated the concrete for the foundation. The building will be outfitted with equipment provided through a $730,000 federal grant earned for ATU by Rep. Steve Womack (AR-03). Officials said the grant will also enable the purchase of virtual and augmented reality welding systems, which will help future K-12 agriculture teachers prepare for lessons they will teach.
