Death toll rises to 27 in Pakistan building collapse as rescue ends
The death toll from a collapsed multistory residential building in Pakistan's Karachi city rose to 27 on Sunday as a three-day rescue operation ended, officials said. Rescuers pulled 11 more bodies from the rubble of the building that collapsed on Friday, according to Dr. Summayya Tariq, the Karachi police surgeon. Ten people were injured and one of them died at a hospital, she said. Authorities said they were investigating the cause of the collapse. Building collapses are common in Pakistan, where construction standards are often poorly enforced. Many structures are built with substandard materials, and safety regulations are often overlooked to reduce costs. In June 2020, an apartment building collapsed in Karachi, the capital of southern Sindh province, killing 22 people.

Death toll rises to 16 in Pakistan building collapse as rescuers search for survivors
KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — The death toll from a collapsed multistory residential building in southern Pakistan rose to 16 as search operations to find survivors continued for the second day. Rescuers pulled 10 more bodies from the rubble during an overnight operation, officials said Saturday. The government-run Civil Hospital said in a statement it had received the 16 bodies, adding several of the injured had been hospitalized. Rescue workers are using heavy machinery to search for at least eight more survivors believed to be trapped under the debris, according to local media and emergency officials. Residents said the building was located on a narrow street, hampering efforts to bring in additional heavy equipment. Television footage showed rescuers removing debris as relatives of those still trapped cried and prayed for the safety of their loved ones. Senegal: 11 killed, 7 injured as building collapses in city of Touba
Eleven people were killed and seven others injured when a three-storey building collapsed in Senegal's second biggest city of Touba, firefighters said Monday. The building was under construction when it collapsed on Sunday afternoon, local media reported. National director of construction, Moussa Tine, blamed "non-compliance with construction standards" for the collapse in a statement to local press. Touba, in central Senegal, is the capital of the Mouride Muslim brotherhood, one of the most important in the West African country. Undergoing large-scale demographic and economic growth, as is the capital Dakar, Touba is also experiencing an explosion in the construction sector. But much of that growth is haphazard with some buildings lacking official authorisation. Building collapse is common in Senegal and is often caused by non-compliance with construction standards, experts say. In early May, two people were killed in the collapse of a building in Dakar. In January 2024, a similar incident left seven dead. In July 2023, two buildings under construction collapsed in neighbouring Guinea, killing five people.
