BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) — Six new speed cameras are now in place and ready to go along the construction zone on Highway 119 between Boulder and Longmont. The Colorado Department of Transportation announced the activation of the Colorado Speed Enforcement Program on Monday. National Weather Service confirms landspout in Franktown The goal is to increase safety for work crews and drivers. A 30-day warning period for drivers will start on July 21 before $75 civil penalties go into effect in the fall. 'This program is not about punishment, it's about prevention. It's not about writing tickets, it's about changing behavior. It's about protecting lives,' said CDOT Chief of Staff Sally Chafee. CDOT reports that in 2024, work zone crashes in Colorado resulted in 567 injuries and 31 deaths. That's nearly double the deaths from the previous year. 'We've seen the numbers and want to do something about it. Speeding is one of the primary causes of some of these fatalities and serious injuries and we thought this would protect our construction workers and reduce the speeding and also increase the safety for the road users,' said CDOT Chief Engineer Keth Stefanik. He said crash history and speed studies are being used to determine the location of the cameras. Signs will be posted warning drivers. 'Our data shows that more than 60% of drivers are speeding through work zones, and 11% of those are going over 10 miles an hour over that speed limit,' said CSP Captain Shane Scovel. A 48-year-old surveyor working roadside near Mission, B.C., died after being hit by a dump truck driver Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities. First responders were called to the scene in Hatzic around 1 p.m. and the worker succumbed to their injuries at the scene, Mission RCMP said in a news release. 'The surveyor had been conducting work roadside on Sylvester Road, and had traffic control persons nearby, and advisory signs set up down the road,' the statement form Mounties said. 'The surveyor was the only one struck by the fully loaded dump truck and trailer – which was not related to the work the surveyor was doing.' The driver remained at the scene and police say there is no indication impairment was a factor. Investigators are working to determine what caused the fatal collision. 'This was a tragic outcome to what was supposed to be just another day at work and is a reminder of how dangerous working roadside can be,' Mission RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Harrison Mohr said, adding an appeal to motorists driving through construction zones. 'Please, slow down and move over. The extra few feet of space, and the extra few seconds of time will be appreciated more than you know.'

Driver with open alcohol triggered fatal Eganville-area crash, police say

Ontario Provincial Police say a 61-year-old driver who failed to stop at a construction zone south of Eganville early Tuesday afternoon, colliding with three other vehicles and killing another man, had an open alcohol container in his vehicle. The accused, from Haliburton, Ont., refused to give a breath sample at the scene, OPP said Wednesday. The man is facing a total of four charges, and his driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days. The multi-vehicle crash happened on Highway 41 south of Spring Creek Road, OPP said Tuesday. On Wednesday, police said an 81-year-old man from the area was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not identified the victim. Highway 41 was closed in the area for several hours. The crash happened about four kilometres south of the village of Eganville, 35 kilometres south of Pembroke and 110 kilometres west of downtown Ottawa.
